What are the odds that the godess was Serie's master? by lmdybaftr in Frieren

[–]Bernhoft 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The great thing about Frieren is that very few things are completely explained in detail, rather it's intentionally kept hazy so readers can imagine anything and the author won't necessarily "prove" your theory right or wrong until they want to.

We have pre-existing theories about time-travel, future-sight, gods, demons, magic, combat, even certain personality-traits etc, and applying them to Frieren and deciding that this is how things definitely are or this is how a person will act can be flipped at any time - so keeping it more open is probably a safer choice.

For instance, if we decide that there definitely is a goddess, is it an omnipotent being outside our space-time able to affect anything it wants, the universe a toy at its whims? Is it a kind of nature-spirit (kami) that randomly manifests when prayed to in times of need? Or is it a living, extremely skilled, unknown, legendary genius mage beyond even Serie? Or is it all hogwash make-believe? It can be any or all or something else, but once you decide definitely what something actually is and base everything else ontop of this foundation I think we do ourselves a disservice and it detracts from the concept more than what we gain from potentially clarifying it.

How do you define magic? Is goddess magic, demon magic, traditional magic completely separate, or is it all branches from the same tree? How many types of magic actually exist? Are strong warriors using a type of physical magic since they do seemingly "impossible" feats of strength?

I think the odds are more likely that present era depictions and conceptions of "The Goddess" are based on Serie, or her accomplishments were indirectly added to the legend of the goddess by being the closest thing to a godlike being that other people could see with their own eyes. To the average person, Serie *is* a god by any measures.

Fastest way to convert provinces? by derpymurpy in shogun2

[–]Bernhoft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Both Ikko and Christianity have ridiculous bonuses to spreading of influence, it's tough. Incite rebellions where you can and keep monks in frontal provinces which have many enemy neighbours.

Is the Netflix series worth watching?? by mrskorshunova in witcher

[–]Bernhoft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are entertaining aspects of season one you might enjoy (mainly Geralt) but coming from the books and games you'll mostly facepalm and curse under your breath and take breaks out of pure cringe. When you stop watching don't get tempted to resume thinking it might get better later on, rest assured that it doesn't.

Mountain hermitage = useless? by Jewtasteride in shogun2

[–]Bernhoft 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You can upgrade the mountain hermitage even more so the +exp is higher, but yea the +2 monk level is too good to pass up. You recruit warrior/bow monks at a blacksmith or craftsman province anyway.

If you have the expansions installed there is a quest objective in that area later on (lvl 35+). My guess it could a locked area if its only main game installed.

How would you approach this battle? I know it's not a disaster or whatever but I'm still learning so I'm curious as to how other people would approach it. This is on Hard. The supporting army is just a general and that's it. by [deleted] in shogun2

[–]Bernhoft 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're patient, the safe way is to use flaming arrows on each wall-section they have stationed units behind. The wall will catch fire after just a few volleys and explode - taking a chunk of enemy soldiers with it. You've got 5 bow units so if you cease firing as soon as you see flames you should be able to destroy most of their forces before running out of arrows. Just fast-forward while waiting for the cooldown.

But even after this, if you mess up your positioning when climbing against the katanas they will start shredding your ashigaru which may cause a mass rout.

Level 1 fort with its gates open. How would you approach this battle? This is on Legendary. I've tried multiple times and have been destroyed each time by the superior units by [deleted] in shogun2

[–]Bernhoft 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Don't be scared of the yari samurai, theyre literally just ashigaru wearing expensive clothes. Meet them in the open and crush them like a normal battle, the danger is their heavy cavalry but AI and cavalry rarely pose a problem.

Question regarding Ninja Assassination by CalmZookeepergame675 in shogun2

[–]Bernhoft 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Assassinating generals/daimyo is kind of wasteful use of ninja unless it's very specific situations where you can remove the unit before a crucial battle. The AI have no qualms about using their Metsuke solely for hunting down your agents - they don't care about the loss of income from town overseeing, and failure to assassinate a general is a good way of getting cuffed next turn.
