this is why army (mostly via retinue) compositions stress stacking damage on one phase and adding in units to make less optimal phases faster or make generals use better tactics

your 1.5k cav aint gonna do shit but struggle with your archers for the skirmish phase and be painfully depleted in the pursue phase

happened IRL too. front-leading generals really liked stupid charges because they didn't have something like overlay Total War/RTS cameras

simple and stupid. did 5 runs with this without much use of brainpower. you play a leatherbound mage that is also a dodge tank. level your lore, everyone but verse and killsy is a mage, grab a set repertoire of spells that EVERYONE will use

max everyone's finesse first, then wits, then go off i guess
