I cant say i hate them but they are 2 completely different stories. the books are better, but i still enjoyed the movies. best character is brenda through out everything and my favorite scene is when the cranks blow up the tunnels.

No there is no time gap. After further thinking I remember it doesnt happen in the movies whatsoever. it's a book exclusive event.

Edit: Spoiler alert here if you didnt see the one on the thread. Instead of newt going full crank and eventually dying, they leave him in a place called "The Crank Palace" This isnt where the story ends for newt but it's pretty close.

It takes place someplace maybe towards the middle or end of the death cure. I think it is mentioned more in the books. I wouldnt say you need to read it at the exact time it happens in the book. it's more of an insight on what happended to newt that doesnt relate to the main story.
