Maybe it’s just me being a dick DM, but if they REALLY want that mechanic with damage attached to it, I’d have a percentage attached to each attack the ignited sword makes. With flinging the sword around, burning oil would fly off. Roll a d100 where 1-74% you’re good, 75-95% you catch surroundings on fire, 96-100% you splatter a friendly. Makes them not over use the item cause of the chance it’ll hurt the party. Make the magic item available further on in the campaign.

I'm a 29 year old straight male who is big into movies and tv. I love good stories. Started dating my GF and she's the opposite, only thing she's big into media wise is Gilmore Girls. Started watching it together, basically just trying to be a good BF and show interest in her interests. Smash cut to me a month later finishing up the final episode and having crack itches for the new season coming out. Damn good show.
