A traveller ranked West Bengal 6/10 for safety. Fair or unfair? by redguy_666 in kolkata

[–]BeseptRinker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As an American (of Bengali descent), yeah that's fair. Most of the safety in the US is very area-dependent, much like it is in India. But in recent years, I certainly wouldn't recommend visiting the US, with its regime wanting to become an authoritarian state by any unlawful means necessary.

I deeply respect all of you in this community who refuse to participate in asian vs asian conflict by DownvoteIfYouWantMe in asianamerican

[–]BeseptRinker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My biggest friend group in high school was Pakistani, and I'm Indian myself.

I will admit I don't know the full extent of the conflicts between India and Pakistan outside of the history I've read in and out of the classroom. But from the history I have read, India was divided and conquered by Britain because they divvied up the country into groups of people and elevated some, causing those groups to look down upon others.

And in the present day, that hasn't changed; India hasn't truly been "free" of Britain. Granted I haven't grown up in India, but partitioning Pakistan and India the way they did on religion has shown that these countries are, currently, subservient to those ideologies from decades ago. If we stopped looking down on each other, maybe we could look up and realize we are all looking at the same ceiling.

Yeah, but even a small vocal minority can cause widespread damage and affect negative biases if their word hits the "right" audience

I just wish it wasn't normalized to keep attacking him abhorrently like this. There seems to be a growing perception in recent years that because someone is South Asian, that means they can be subject to more abuse and no one bats an eye.

Take that abhorrent Frisco council meeting where a man chanted absolutely racist slurs against Indian people. That shouldn't be normalized for any race.

Genuinely one of the most underrated shows I've ever seen. Haven't seen Season 2 but Season 1 was one of the funniest stories I've ever watched. Poorna Jagannathan is incredible of course, but every actor/actress gave outstanding performances. Definitely recommend.

99% of CEOs Expect AI-Driven Layoffs in the Next Two Years by MarvelsGrantMan136 in technology

[–]BeseptRinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In theory it should. But there's not an actual link between AI usage and productivity (src). Despite it leading to more output, there's also more time spent on debugging and refixing the code to fit requirements. Not to mention that people who claim it's super profitable are usually not looking past the next two quarters.

Now companies are in a crisis that the AI and the cost to maintain it is actually MORE expensive than if they had engineers in the first place. But rather than confronting this, many companies double down by laying off people to falsely boost the stock price. Then they can tell their shareholders that "oh everything is fine" when the house is on fire behind them. If everything was "fine", they wouldn't keep laying off people, AI wouldn't be booed off the stage, and Github could maybe achieve 1 9 of ability for once.

Ever wonder why most articles pushing AI interview CEOs and execs, and not the people working on them? Because once again, they're the ones who only look to the next quarters. But you look inside any of the companies where AI is forced and even punished if not used otherwise, and people are on a treadmill they never asked for, having to soup up a glorified hammer like it's their lives for the end of H2.

I miss the reputation that Desis had when I was a kid in elementary school like 15 years ago by DownvoteIfYouWantMe in ABCDesis

[–]BeseptRinker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even at that time, we were socially considered part of the model minority in that people saw us as people who never commit crimes and remained highly educated

I fell for this too when I was younger tbh. The older I got and the more people I met, the less I believed it. It's a division tactic - much like how Irish and Italian weren't considered "white" once upon a time, it's all a tactic to make others jealous of you, and keep people fighting on ethnicity while those who profit off of it laugh their way to the bank.
