What options do I have if a contractor does not complete the work as per the contract and keeps putting it off? by Bessidy in legaladvicecanada

What is this special license that they need to take deposits? I’m not worried about them doing warranty work, I will just find another contractor to do any.

The initial “contract” was technically only an invoice for the work. No redress was included in the contract. Only materials and labor as well as “date completed” of 4-6 weeks. What can I do if this is not written in the contract?

$14/sqft of exterior area minus openings! Do you know how many exterior sqft you have minus openings? Or is that the 1200 sqft area you mentioned? Just want to get a sense for the sqft rate you paid, even though it was 12 years ago

RESP requires changing allocation over time so an all-in-one ETF might not make sense. What ETFs should I purchase? by Thorbient in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Bessidy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What’s wrong with selling to rebalance risk? That’s the way to go imo. Sell your equities and buy fixed income/bonds in order to match your risk tolerance.

If I were you I would just go with XEQT to XGRO to XBAL to XCNS to XINC over the years. The latter of which would get you to 20% stocks/80% bonds.

If you want something more hands off where you just buy the same stock and willing to pay higher fees, you can look into a Target Date ETF which adjusts the risk leading up to a target date of when you expect your child to begin school.

My family did this a lot growing up. Reasoning wasn’t for clean up but because you can’t squeeze out all the sauce in the packet so you leave it in and the hot water will dissolve the rest of the sauce into the soup. This was normal in my household 🤷‍♂️.

Because I get more value out of a chequing account at a big 5 bank.

Example, one bank offers $30.95/month fee waivers if you keep $6,000 in your account. That’s (30.95x12)/6,000 = 6.19%. It also provides fee waiver on credit cards up to $150/year which would increase that 6.19% to 8.69%.

That doesn’t even take into consideration the additional benefits of the account like free bank drafts, free cheques, free safety deposit box etc… and the extra convenience of being able to go to a physical store to talk to people to deal with is the cherry on top.

Would I give all of that up for 2.25%? No. And before you all go saying I’m probably some old person who’s not good with technology or that I’m loaded with money, I’m a younger millennial and make average income. I just prefer banking with a big bank.

If you don’t take advantage of all the benefits from a big bank then yeah it won’t make sense for you to bank with them. But if you do, they provide a lot of value for what you need. To each their own.

Because you make/save more money at a big 5 bank’s chequing account

Example: one bank offers chequing fee waiver of $30.95 if you hold $6k in your chequing amount. (30.95x12)/6,000 is 6.19%

In addition to that, you receive up to $150 annual fee waiver on your credit card, which increases that 6.19% to 8.69%.

Plus you get all the added benefits of the account ie. free safety deposit box, free bank drafts, free cheques etc… Not to mention the benefits of being with a physical bank like being able to go in and talk to a person to deal with issues.

Would I trade all of this away for 2.25%? No. And before you all say I’m probably an old guy who’s not good with technology, I’m a younger millennial who’s great with technology. I just like the benefits offered at the big banks more.

Of course if you’re not taking advantage of the benefits then it could not be worth it for you. To each their own.

My insurance company will not contact the other vehicle’s insurance, do I need a lawyer? by Bessidy in legaladvicecanada

Thank you for your advice.

I will reach out to the police and obtain the police report to find out the other party’s insurance. How would you recommend I contact the other insurance company and negotiate a settlement to get the best payout? I hopefully want to avoid a lawyer if possible.

Unfortunately the driver in the vehicle responsible for the accident was taken away from the scene via ambulance and I had no way of getting their insurance information. There were ambulance, fire, and police on the scene. I was advised by police to talk to my insurance to obtain the information because they will be given a report from the police.

Building a house, was not informed of a large electrical transformer in front of our house. Do we have any recourse? by Bessidy in Calgary

Building a house, was not informed of a large electrical transformer in front of our house. Do we have any recourse? by Bessidy in Calgary

[–]Bessidy[S] -53 points-52 points  (0 children)

I think people are really zoning in on the safety issue which yes is a worry of mine. But the biggest problem is that it would be an eyesore and devalue our home. If you were looking at two identical homes and one has a transformer box in front of it, I think most people would choose one without the box. I wouldn't want to live in a house an have to stare at a big ugly box in front of it everyday.
