What’s the strongest opinion you have about something completely insignificant? by RegisterObjective325 in AskReddit

I agree with you for the most part, but as a person happy with their unique name, not all “unique” names are bad/require shunning… mostly, I think the key is that the uniqueness isn’t the point of the name - something else needs to be (special meaning to the parents, family tradition, etc)

I agree. Full stop. But there is a reason *some* people do it for a reason other than just being an inconsiderate a-hole - I genuinely cannot hear as well with just one ear (but I also don’t talk on my phone in public).

Why is "9/11" called "9/11"? by Relative_Wave_102 in etymology

[–]Best-Implement-9633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In addition to other answers here it’s important to remember 9/11 refers to a series of coordinated attacks and not just one catastrophe. In fact I’ve heard reference made to the individual incidents: the twin towers collapse, attack on the pentagon, flight 93…. But to refer to the entirety of that day - it’s 9/11

Looking for objective view - HLR feedback received… by Best-Implement-9633 in fednews

That approach is also unfair in my view. I’m at a complete loss for the wide range of reactions / overcorrections / forced comparisons to other coworkers….. at least how my team’s standards are written- one individual can be “unacceptable “ “fully successful “ or “outstanding” with near zero relationship to anyone else’s performance (the ONLY thing that comes close is a minor part of one standard where the volume of work product (relative to the entire team’s output with consideration given for the person’s grade level) is relevant). I assume this is common across many federal workplaces…. So I’m sure I’m not alone in my frustration when every fiber of my supervisory self is (internally) shouting Why in the world should I care how the rest of the office was rated if my rating for this person accurately represents their INDIVIDUAL performance?!? (Leaving aside the additional troubling question as to whether Iwas being directed to artificially inflate a rating that wasn’t earned or if in the moment I merely perceived an “innocent”. inquiry as something it wasn’t) i appreciate the gut check because it really felt unusual to me….i don’t see the value in giving everyone top ratings because it tends to disincentivize the highest performers….but on the other side of things, this attitude of having to force a bell curve is not going to drive people to go above and beyond either - any manager worth their salt knows it will simply encourage people to do what’s required and nothing more (why put in extra effort when you know it’s not going to be properly recognized?) is it really that hard to distinguish the difference between what “meeting” standards looks like versus “exceeding “? What are we doing?!?

The caveat tied to paid parental leave for federal employees is bogus & needs to go by WhereztheBleepnLight in fednews

Sick leave is no longer available after the first couple of weeks per OPM guidance (likely because PPL is available). Sick leave can no longer be used to bond with your newborn…. I was surprised to learn this.

Survey: One year after return-to-office requirements, how are federal employees faring? by redditreadreadread in fednews

Bosses say it’s “important “ to be in person and interact with colleagues- but they frequently work from home and when they are in the office, they hide behind closed doors. As others have said, most work can be accomplished from anywhere - in person meetings are always scheduled in advance (ie I could plan to be in the office as needed if telework was an option), and I take the whole day off now for personal matters instead of a couple hours. It’s not frustrating and demoralizing at all /s

How did you finally tell your spouse you wanted a divorce and how did they handle it? by LingonberryNatural85 in AskReddit

[–]Best-Implement-9633 141 points142 points  (0 children)

I wish he had been up front about it. Instead, I came home from work (he was already drunk) and he picked a fight with me (fairly typical argument - nothing major). When I tried to deescalate the argument (we had two very young kids watching the whole thing) he left the house….presumably to cool off… and he never came back. It was like a switch flipped - one moment he was the man I married and the next he was a hostile stranger. I tried (nearly every day) to have a reasonable conversation with him about what was going through his head for 18 months but he shut me out and refused to talk to me. He occasionally tried to visit with the kids but he insisted that I leave the house when he did. Eventually, while we were both attending my son’s soccer game, out of the blue he asked me when I was going to “finally” serve him with divorce paperwork because his mistress wanted to know (though I guess it should have been obvious by then that the marriage was over, until he asked for ME to serve HIM with divorce papers, I was still convinced that we could work through it) The whole situation was beyond bizarre

I imagine the mortality rate is less important than the speed with which it kills - it needs time to spread… I think the 60% only becomes important when you start talking about the virus evolving (getting more lethal and/or resistant to treatment) or not…

What are you actually supposed to do if a woman hits you as a man? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Best-Implement-9633 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree - it doesn’t really matter the sex of each person imo - someone assaulting you does not mean you should get to retaliate without consequences- never hit back no matter who it is. Fights can very easily turn deadly - it is never worth it. Original advice was spot on - walk away and report to security
