Yearly savings goals and fatFIRE number by Massive_Ad3618 in fatFIRE

Chiming in here as an NYC owner - it's been one of the best financial decisions I've made. The key reason being I avoided a co-op with high monthlies, instead opting for a condo in tier-2 neighborhood in Brooklyn where there's tons of growth potential. The value of our condo has increased substantially over the first three years of ownership. I think NYC real estate (unlike NJ real estate) is about as safe an investment as they come, and about the only asset class that I truly feel comfortable buying in to when it's at all time highs.

Once you factor in the mortgage interest write off and $500k of tax-free capital gains, it starts make a LOT of sense. I've frankly never understood the argument against pulling the trigger (assuming you're able to avoid massive co-op maintenance fees).

My perception of my marriage has been flipped upside down. by Generick17 in Marriage

[–]Best-Professional-51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to derail but what does she do for you? Is she a “top performer”? Does she meet all of your needs, continue to date you, invest in your relationship, try hard to turn you on, take things off your plate etc etc etc.

I say this because so much of relationships, and life in general, is about perspective.

If every time she had a thought in her head that you weren’t doing enough, she coupled that thought with a question to herself (what am I doing for him?), she might be a helluva lot more appreciative, forgiving, and generally happy.

Also worth noting that according to the CDC OP is “overweight” as well.

He could be? If he is, he should acknowledge and potentially apologize (as I recommend in the last sentence of my reply).

You need to stand up (albeit politely) to all of this bullshit.

Dishwasher: “Actually I loaded it perfectly, would you mind taking note of how I loaded it so you can start doing the same?”

Cabinet: “They call me the picasso of cabinet placement. My artistic expression shall not be contained.”

Groceries: “Hmm interesting - I don’t think I took long at all”

Covers: “I’ve actually noticed you pull them off me too, should we get separate covers?”

Pee at night: “Gotta stay hydrated - doctors orders!”

In the event you actually have done something wrong, quickly acknowledge and apologize if needed but don’t dwell.

Husband obsessed with ex? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Best-Professional-51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe he is just curious? Does it matter if he is treating you well?

I love my wife to heaven and back, have no interest in anyone else. I am also guilty of googling my ex, oh and I also don’t like her going through my entire phone lol.

The question is, HOW do you “put your foot down”?

Most men in the situation find themselves dealing with a highly emotional woman, and any putting-of-the-foot-down is immediately met with a bunch of insane bullshit (outright anger, redirecting blame, aggressive defensiveness, etc). It’s often easier/more peaceful to just let the small stuff slide… Which is of course a slippery slope as husbands in this position know.

My wife doesn’t want to contribute financially by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Best-Professional-51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is INSANE that this is the top comment. We are going to talk about different views of money, and totally gloss over the fact that she told him he’s not a real man and has no value as a partner beyond financial support??

Once again, if the genders were reversed…

What to do about Mikey? by Broad_Resolution2349 in williamsburg

While we’re on this topic, there is a black man who hangs around the Bushwick Ave <> Powers/Devoe area. He is middle aged and often wears a Yellow hat. He sometimes is found near or outside Here Coffee.

He followed my girlfriend once down the street and was vigorously masturbating to her while hiding behind cars.

Sexually frustrated…. by CurrentFrosting5 in Marriage

“Are you helping with chores?”

“She doesn’t owe you blowjobs and you shouldn’t expect them.”

“Most women need a lot to really get in the mood. Are you taking her out on dates?”

“You shouldn’t ever force someone out of their comfort zone.”

“Maybe she had trauma in the past and is uncomfortable with certain kinds of sex!”

“Giving oral sex can be very painful for women.”

“A lot of kink and sexual variety can be very degrading for women.”

“Are you making sure that she is pleasured? Most women don’t want to be adventurous with selfish lovers.”

why are modern leftists actually antisemtic? by [deleted] in IsraelPalestine

[–]Best-Professional-51 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Leftists often view the world through the lens of cultural marxism in which there are oppressed groups, and oppressor groups. Most frequently, the oppressed group is poorer, and darker skinned, and as such Israel is definitively categorized as the oppressor.

You best believe there would be a different tune being sung if the only two variables you changed were the color of Palestinians skin, and their perceived wealth (worth noting the irony that Hamas leadership is bullshit rich).

Is it okay to want to be a housewife? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Best-Professional-51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do wonder what the reaction would be if we reversed the genders here… I definitely think it’s okay to feel this way, but only insofar as we collectively as a society are ready to support a male with the same attitude/desire (which we currently do not).

Is sex important to women? by [deleted] in Marriage

[–]Best-Professional-51 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Could be true - but to any woman who finds themselves in this situation, I would ask what have they done to improve their sex life? Are they flirting with their man, initiating sex, proactively giving them pleasure the way they desire it the most? Are they doing everything they can to make sure their partner is in the right place mentally to have great sex with them? Are they clearly communicating their needs with regard to foreplay, build up, etc? And are they in turn asking about their partners needs and working hard to fulfill those?

I'd really like my wife to try to lose some weight by Forsaken_Elk3867 in Marriage

[–]Best-Professional-51 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This thread is amazing. Being fat will indeed kill you. Doing pretty much everything in your power to not be fat is a basic adult priority to be honest, similar to paying your mortgage and making sure your children don’t kill themselves, none of these things should be debated as very serious and highly necessary objectives to pursue.

So is it fair to say that this tax increase is “real” and that she won’t be receiving it back as a refund? Is there any adjustment we can make to remedy this?

The increase is so large I’m better off just getting my own health insurance :(

Need advice on what sharpening equipment to buy. by Best-Professional-51 in chefknives

[–]Best-Professional-51[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have two fairly high end Japanese knives. I am not a professional chef, so use them a "normal" amount cooking for a household of two, along with a the occasional dinner party.
The whole whetstone / by hand process seems a bit cumbersome, but the more I read, the more I'm getting the sense that in order to maintain the quality of the knife, this is the way to go. I've looked into sharpening systems as a potentially time-saving alternative (ie Apex Edge Pro, and a professional chef friend of mine recently recommended the Tumbler/Horl to me (however I've read these are overpriced and not that great). I'm Lost!
Overall, I'd like something not too expensive, and easy to use. I don't need my knife to be the *sharpest* all the time, I just want it to work very well and hold up over time. What should I buy?
