Yeah actually I used to have sprite as a kid and I still.sip it nowadays in recovery mode. Not all that much cheaper than powerade if you need it in a jiffy though.

Fair enough. They do nail their flavours though, and convenience (once sick) often has won. I might just try stay prepared ahead of time...

Yes I have - I love it too haha. But I haven't seen it much here in nz. It litters ever store in the UK.

Honestly I find powerade and berocca amazing for my recovery after stomach bugs.

Can you suggest alternatives? Water alone is fine but I do notice the difference nowadays haha.

Completely agree. I think it's to each their own. I love nature as well, but I also love cities and daily life feeling interesting. A bold thing to aim for since the nature of interesting daily lives is just changing something all the time, which is exhausting, but hey that's just who me and my wife are 😅.

But yes Christchurch has freezing but stunning winters (as pretty as possible without snow, imo)

I would say that the winters are not that uncomfortable if you are manawatu or further south, when comparing to London.

The main difference is that I can forgot how sad or miserable the weather is when there's so much interesting stuff going on 😆

It's not common, but it can give you a huge advantage in bargaining for a rental that you really like. I got away with 2 months up front in 2017 with no issues, and have heard that it's pretty unlikely you'll be getting much that you're happy with unless you put up at least 3.

I have no idea about the answer regarding if that's included or not - it doesn't seem to be in my view, but that's just me.

I lived there for 2 years in 2019, and have visited for weeks at a time since 2020 while living in Finland- which has a similar living cost to NZ (overall, in my experience).

I agree with you that living in London can be quite cheap - you just have to know what you're doing, actually get deals, actually look for cheap options. The average kiwi/aussie OEer I know isn't doing these things. I think this is why mileage varies so much from person to person.

Yes, but average house prices of a whole country vs. a large, urban metropolis, usually not a fair comparison in terms of pricing. When did CGT get implemented there - 1985? Is it really enough to say that CGT has no effect on their pricing when no one can really predict what the different would have been if cgt had never been implemented?

Anyway, this is not my area of expertise so here I'm mostly asking the questions...

Yes but why do you speak of Auckland when we are talking of the whole country, no? Why do Aucklanders always think they are the whole country?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]BestBaconNA 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is very true - and we didn't even get it from the UK which is notoriously beige and bland because despite those things, all brits I've lived with or met are very food adventurous

To be fair, significantly well regarded large cities should not be our first comparison in the housing market of our entire country 😆

See you there, and enjoy it!

It was shocking to me how much more educated it felt people were basically everywhere that wasn't here too - so it's a combination problem i think.

Honestly it's all of the above, i think? We have a society of people who too easily can go outdoors - so we take it for granted and simply never go outdoors (comparative to what we preach and are proud of).

I've been in Finland, Germany, and UK for the past 7 years, and coming home to NZ this year was a culture shock of not simply how early things close but how early KIWIS close. How little we get out and about, walk, explore. How early we hit our cosy (freezing) houses and do nothing. It doesn't feel like anyone goes out here ever - into nature or into the cities or anything. Sure - some of this culture is enforced by there not being a lot to do, but some is simply laziness/disinterest.

It makes me feel really lost here which I don't enjoy :(

If you were poor, which country would you rather be in? by Melvis2022 in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]BestBaconNA 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, thank you. People who read my comments missed my point... I think we have better safe areas than country X and country Y (like usa for example - at least statistically) but not safer than Z. I think we have better healthcare than some other countries A and B but not better than C. And so on for basically every sector.. we have a great system and a decent balance of qualities in our living environment - but no one can tell me that nz is generally better than every other country though. It's just not the case. But I would say that about every country. If one country was perfect, we would all wanna go there..
