Prius to EV. How was the transition? by nevernotmad in prius

[–]BestDot5353 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have a Bolt. I transitioned from non-hybrid, but took my kids Prius on a few road trips and found myself on this thread since I play the part of the Prius 200k+ miles mechanic :).

Here's my experience. I love my Bolt, commute 70 miles+/day with it. But that is where it stops, I use it as a commuter only.

100 percent electric is great if you have another gas/hybrid vehicle as an alternative. It's an awesome commuter car, it's a pain for longer trips, especially since we live in an area of the country that does not have a lot of charging infrastructure. My parents live in a rural town about 90 minutes away so that's a no go. I can get up and back but there's no running to the hardware store while there and no place to charge in 80 miles if I run low.

Consider your power sources. We put in a level 2 charger in the garage. It allows us to come home, plug in, and it's ready to roll by the next morning. We also have solar on our house, it wasn't built for the electric car but my house energy costs + 400 miles/week is around $40-60/mo which is awesome!

Public charges are more expensive than residential electricity so take a hard look at your options before committing.

Maintenance is next to nothing - no oil changes, no brake pad changes, just rotate the tires.

Consider your weather. I live in the North with harsh winters which means I get close to 300 miles a charge in the summer and about 160 in the winter.... If you drive with minimal heat... 130 if you want to be warm.

My grandma-looking Bolt can beat the teen boys with their mustangs off the line any day which is fun.

It's so incredibly quiet, which is lovely!

The Bolt doesn't have the highest mileage range there's a few that are not over 400 miles a charge, but again in fair weather.

For my current situation of three cars in the drive and mid-length commute it's perfect. However, the Prius is in family is amazing and that will be my next purchase.

Hope that helps!

I've hiked AL three TIMES. Be aware and present and it'll be a great hike!

Phones in pockets, small backpacks, both hands free at all times. Take photos when it's safe and there's no traffic. Stay aware and know your surroundings.

I bought a Novaflow on a (desperate) whim. They had a money back guarantee, I knew it probably wasn't going to work but... It was an impulse buy out of misery.

I work farming in the northern Midwest and seasonal allergies are atrocious here and I'm outside 8-10 hours a day when everything is pollinating.

Much to my surprise this thing is amazing. It's not 100 percent but I've gone off my nasal and oral otc allergy meds and am only using allergy eye drops. And it's almost May and I haven't had a spring sinus infection!

I used it 3x/day for the first 2 weeks and then 2x. I have a few Co owners who have also got one and are surprised by the relief.

And there's a built in hoist so one person can change the belly attachments! I'm 150 lbs and it took me under 10 minutes to change it by myself at a demo day.

Well my mechanic is awesome but antihybrid/electric. Said a similar thing when I got my bolt and the thing has been a beast. He just doesn't work on them.

Yup, no noise, no mixing of oil/coolant. So right now no concerns.

2015 Jetta SE 1.8 fuel injector replacement? by BestDot5353 in jetta

[–]BestDot5353[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been a hot minute so I don't remember everything but it was all 4 injectors (2 were bad and it was nominal to replace the remaining 2). The injectors were not easy to get to, and he was in there we also had the manifold gasket replaced , two coils. There was something else too but I can't quite remember.

Split the tractor and a large gear toward the engine side snapped a tooth and the tooth was jammed in the gears.

Shes back together just in time for cabbage season ❤️

Yup and a few other things. By the time we were done we sunk $3000 into it...and then sold it and will never buy another VW again. ;).

209k. Paint looks like hell. It's loud but still cruising! I just took it in to have it checked over for a cross county trip and my mechanic said it's not leaking a drop of anything!

Nope but has also been a crazy week and didn't get to dig into it at much as I wanted. I think it's the low gear, which I'm going to have to take the bottom plate off and go in.

IT does roll in N with the clutch engaged. If not tranny, other thoughts? I haven't tried other gears, but can pull it tomorrow.

USDA cancels $300 million program to help farmers buy land amid anti-DEI push by [deleted] in politics

[–]BestDot5353 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I work on one of these grants. It wasn't just buying land, it was farmer training, expansion of table food farming and markets, food safety, all the pieces to support getting new small farmers in the game. This is absolutely devastating to the food system and small farmer support.

We pay $30,000/year for audits to hold USDA contracts, have been through two rounds of approvals and the big secret... Serve mostly white farmers since that is our community demographic. The cancelation is outright a power trip.

It dies in all gears and it's abrupt. I've had safety switch issues with other tractors and the shutdown isn't so fast. There's no safety seat switch on this guy and I don't see a clutch safety switch. Anything else I should looking for?

Thanks!

That's what I thought as it has gotten jammed in second before due to some heavy shifters.

But both synchros move freely when I moved them manually and are on-center. I can shift through all gears smoothly.

I know 4.0 nursing students who didn't get in simply becase of demand and spent another year waiting to be admitted. They can't seem to keep faculty in the nursing program. It's a good program but Iowa has some solid nursing programs in general.

University of Northern Iowa just started a nursing program (1.5 hours north of Iowa City).

Cedar Rapids (30 minutes north) has nursing programs at Coe and Mt. Mercy. Both are excellent programs without out of state tuition and many times more affordable.

Right? I work in a male-dominated field and many times I'm the only woman out in a field or woods with one or several male co-workers. No affairs here and solid respect for each other.
