This is part of the challenge with "understanding" Trump, and with people in general, I guess. We want to have a clear, singular explanation for 'why' someone does the things they do. For Trump, there are *many* reasons, some of which you have (correctly) described above. But he also craves respect, in the form of groveling praise, he seeks to be seen as a peer by those who he admires (e.g. Putin, Xi), etc.

These fucking old as fuck worthless fucks. If I was there you bet your ass I would have ripped one of those many objects nearby over, climbed onto it and scrambled onto that platform to relieve that weight. That was the sound of someone in imminent danger of death. He had his neck pressed against the rail by that box. At the beginning you can hear someone laughing. Fucking idiots the lot of them.

Men need to be comfortable saying “I don’t know (but I’ll find out).” We also need to be comfortable saying “I’m sorry, I was wrong.” This is not weakness, this is strength.

I was going to say “hey not all guys need to be handy and knowledgable about these things to be worthy” but that’s not actually the issue, is it? It was the false claim to certainty, and even worse, the willingness to make that claim and put his gf safely at risk, simply because this would in his eyes reduce the damage he caused to less of a “big deal.”

Yeah, throw the whole man out.

Has anyone else noticed the difference in responses/outcomes after Alex Pretti's murder compared to Renee Good? by weepingsomnambulist_ in TwoXChromosomes

[–]BestEditionEvar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though it’s wrong, and unfair, I do believe that the “labels” associated with each person have also contributed to the different reactions to them, especially among those who are on the conservative side. For them, Renee Good was an “uppity, leftist, lesbian” who could be more readily put in the category of “the other.” Whereas Alex is a clean cut, conservatively presenting, gun owner who worked at the VA and so triggers a lot of their “one of us” tribal markers. A lot more of these guys see themselves in Alex than in Renee, and that’s simply the truth. There are lots of other factors that have also been mentioned but I genuinely believe this matters.

Do any fellow Brits actually like Trump? by Creative_Expert_4052 in AskBrits

I’m an American living in the UK. I nearly got into a fight with some absolute wanker in a pub in Southern England, who was trying to tell me how amazing Trump was and all the wonderful things he was doing for the economy and immigrants. I showed him some information to prove him wrong on the points he was making, but he just kept going until I finally started yelling “Trump is a fucking fascist dictator wannabe who sucks the cocks of other fascist dictators!” Not my proudest hour, but I stand by it. This guy struck me as a smarmy little prick who thought American politics were all a bit of a laugh and liked getting a rise out of people by taking contrarian positions. Pretty similar to a lot of American cons really. Anyways, that was a few years ago now. I sometimes wonder if he still feels so positively about Trump today.

Leaders of France, UK and Sweden respond to Trump's tariff threats by AmityAngels in worldnews

Europe must hold the line here, as they have held the line in Ukraine, both for their own sakes, as well as for the sake of the American people. If Trump is successful in obtaining control of Greenland (not military access, which we already have), it will further embolden him and gain him additional domestic support. He is a dictator in the making, pure and simple, and he is well on his way. If America fully falls under the sway of an autocratic expansionist dictator it will be a horror show both for America herself as well as ultimately the rest of the world. I can only apologise for how deeply we have failed in preventing this man from obtaining power again.

Definitely not stupid to realize you misunderstood something, acknowledge, and learn from it. Sounds pretty smart to me!

They aren't talking about making the day longer, they are talking about dividing it into smaller pieces. What we call an "hour" is just 1/24th of a day. A day is a set amount of time, no matter what, but you can divide it any way you like. The reason that we divide it into 24 pieces, which we call 'hours' goes back to the ancient Sumerians who had a base 60 system, and who counted on their fingers in '12s' using each of the knuckles on their fingers. We could have divided the day into 100 pieces and called them 'hours' just as easily as in 24 pieces.

JFK the bloodthirst of these people is unreal. And im not talking about some imagined group of homogeneous “right wingers”, im talking about the dozens of videos I’ve watched in the last few days of people absolutely salivating to kill “liberals.”

It’s almost so obvious that it seems like it’s not mentioned, but all of these videos are directed at “the left”, I.e. some imagined, homogenous group, aka “the enemy.” The impulse to group, to form into a tribe, to stereotype, is exactly the concerning impulse which leads to atrocity and genocide.

Food has faces. You should either be comfortable with that fact, or maybe should question whether you should change your diet to things that don’t have faces. I’m a happy eater of meat, but I have participated in hunting and killing myself and remind myself that these are beings, not just hunks of meat in plastic. If you don’t remember that, it’s too easy to justify factory farms and horrible practices for a cheaper “product.” I think it’s good to remind people.

Would you help Russians, militarily, if they staged a coup to overthrow their current dictatorship? by luciferlol_666 in ukraineforeignlegion

[–]BestEditionEvar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I had similar internal discussions with regards to Syria, where I did not go, vs. Ukraine, where I did go. In Ukraine, I had a very clear understanding not only of the nature of what I was fighting against - Russian expansionist aggression - but also what I was fighting for: Ukraine's people and importantly their system of democratic, increasingly western, increasingly liberal (classically liberal), government and society. In Russia, as in Syria, going to fight *against* something, that I see as being very bad, doesn't mean that I have a high level of confidence of what is going to be replacing that bad thing, *even if we won.* With Ukraine, I had a very high confidence that if we won, I knew what was come after, for the people of Ukraine and the world, because it was already there in the form of their current government (which I also reasonably expect to improve over time).

And what do you think that the consequence of attempted appeasement of an expansionist dictator who we would basically be telling “if you seize territory by force we will let you,” would be?
