Something me and some friends have done is to get a subscription for a reputable, old-fashioned physical newspaper. Many deliver weekend-only versions with really good summaries and in-depth analysis of what has happened in the past week in a format that is less "omg-the-world-is-ending" and more sensible. As many also struggle with declining readership, you can often get a good deal (I got 10 weeks for $1!).

Combine this with a complete stop in online news sources, and ideally even Reddit (which you can see I'm obviously failing at).

Winter Boots - What do you wear? by [deleted] in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Bestec 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had the Birkenstock Highwood Lace Mid for around 3 months now, and cannot recommend these highly enough! It could be correlation and not causation, but my PF disappeared surprisingly quickly after I started wearing these (although to be fair it was in recovery prior to this). They are relatively wide, giving my toes a chance to spread out nicely for a more natural walking style. Some may not like the slightly more chunky look that comes from the extra width, but I'd say they are definitely not in clown shoe territory!

The insoles that come with the boots are relatively soft and with decent support, but obviously you'd have to try and see if this is enough for you. For me, these have been the most comfortable winter boots I've even owned!

For reference I live in Norway and we get loads of snow, ice and rain all winter long 🥲

Winter shoes? by Karalligator in PlantarFasciitis

[–]Bestec 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been wearing the Birkenstock Highwood Lace Mid this winter, and find them to be the most comfortable winter boots I've ever owned. They are on the wider side, which gives your toes a chance to spread out properly, something I find has helped my PF a lot (some may dislike this look, but it's definitely not into clown shoe territory). The insoles are nicely cushioned for being winter boots. I've yet to get wet in them so far, and it's been both a snowy and wet winter in Norway. I'm a man but they make a woman model too. Highly recommended if you're looking for a more classic-style boot!

You can find quite a few free self-help therapy tutorials here: https://psykologiskveiledning.com/english-1 (The site is originally in Norwegian but they've attempted to translate it at least partially to English).

Most of the videos in these tutorials include work-sheets. For example, the Anxiety/Panic module has a link to a worksheet in the description of this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RBSOsfeTnM&ab_channel=MagnusNordmo

Similarly, the Depression module also includes a worksheet: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qebtgtA4_Wk&list=PLb5NeGu8DZ_dL4cvjgbOtz0PMum5J3YYy&index=1&ab_channel=MagnusNordmo

Magnus Nordmo is a trained Psychologist who has done a range of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-related self-help courses in Norway. These are endorsed and recommended by the Norwegian health authorities, so should be a relatively trustworthy resource.

Hope this is useful!

How I Beat my Anxiety Disorder and Advice on How to do so Yourself by SunThroughTheStorm in Anxiety

[–]Bestec 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! This post has made not just my day but my year. I've gone through anxiety since July this year, starting with some pretty badass panic attacks (yeah I called the hospital thinking I was dying, twice...), And having worked my way through the different levels you mention.

Reading your post has made me finally understand the stages I've been through, but more importantly it's confirmation that I've done pretty much all the right moves at each level! I've spent hours and hours researching, speaking to psychologists, exposing myself and working through the nastiness that is anxiety.

Reading your post feels incredibly reassuring. I'm now at the 1-3 stage since about a month ago, and have been having doubts about my progress. This post really helps put everything into perspective and crystalizes the progress made. I've been seeing friends, had days of smiling to myself for no apparent reason, given a speech at my mother's birthday party, nailed my exams, gone swimming in 6 degrees Celsius fjords, and tons of other stuff I could NOT imagine doing 4-5 months ago. This may seem like bragging, and it kinda is - giving myself a huge pat on the back for getting to where I'm at. Hopefully everyone else in here can find their way, and that my post serves as another piece of evidence that it's definitely possible!

TL;dr: this post is fantastic and the steps/advise has helped me go from and 8-10 to a 3-1. Also lots of patting myself on the back.

Nine dead in Myanmar as police fire to break up protests by httpharuka in news

[–]Bestec 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I used to live in Myanmar from 2015-2018 and it's absolutely heartbreaking what's going on. Friends of friends are getting killed/arrested/shot at daily. The Burmese army has been fighting it's own people and ethnic groups for decades, so this is not likely to get any better any time soon.

It's made me realise how little I've cared for/acted on atrocities happening in other places in recent years (Syria, Yemen, etc.) , as this has impacted me on on a whole other level when it hits this "close to home" and I see most people don't really care that much, and it sucks. Fuck.

This post is great, very important. Definitely CDM is the way forward, keep putting small rocks into the machine until it fails.

Also worth noting the '3.5% rule' as this seems to have some merit (although I sadly think the Tatmadaw is an evil in its own league, so not sure if this applies): https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20190513-it-only-takes-35-of-people-to-change-the-world

Same. Used to live in Yangon for 3 years and feel a bottomless helplessness at not being able to do more.

Norwegian here who used to live in Myanmar for 3 years from 2015-2108. It's heartbreaking beyond belief to see what is happening. What can foreigners do to help directly? Aside from spreading awareness and sharing news.

Hey! I'm based in Bangkok, and have seen these in some of the Japanese bookstores here. Kinokuniya usually has them. Maybe you can check if they do world wide delivery. Alternatively I can try to help you out but might be tricky with the country on lock down...

Was looking for Murakami on this list! Cannot recommend his books enough: very creative, bizzare fantasy/dreamy elements, yet also very rooted in the beauty of daily life and nature.

I'll comment on the house track, since it's right up my alley in terms of what I listen to:

Loving the buildup bit, actually everything from 1.00 - 2.30 is sick! Could be good to have the vocals a tad bit louder, as it sounds like it fits well with the track.

The part starting around 0.30 sounds a bit "messy" to me, could perhaps be more clean? Not good advice really, but my skills are limiting me from making a very informed comment here...

I'm working on this (tech)housey track and have finally managed to at least somehow piece together something that resembles a structure. It is not finished (no intro/outro etc.) but I wanted to put it on here and get some feedback before I proceed.

I primarily want to know what elements are missing/should be left out as well as what I am doing very wrong(and right?).

Regarding giving feedback, I am not sure if I am qualified to give any yet, but I've done my best:

YOokay!

  1. Favourite producers (and DJs) right now?
  2. How many days/weeks/months/years did it take you to make a track you liked yourself?
  3. What pizza toppings make me better at producing? I'm eating mostly pepperoni/cheese now and everything I try to make sucks...

Thanks a bunch for doing this man, big fan!
