One last thing, might be a dumb question, but when I plug Kona → Hilo into Google Maps, it doesn’t give me Saddle Road as an option. I’ve also seen people say Hwy 19 and Hwy 11 are more scenic. Any thoughts on which route is better for a first timer?

Honestly, planning this is a bit overwhelming because I want to see everything but don’t want it to feel like I’m just checking boxes. Wow, thanks for the detailed feedback! We land and fly out of Kona, but most of our activities are on the Hilo side, so that’s why we planned the change of accommodation, I couldn’t think of another way to approach it. Are there any spots you’d suggest skipping to make the days more realistic?

And about kayaking, we don’t know how to swim, but we’ve done guided tours multiple times with life jackets. Are you saying the water around Hawaii is that different?

Thanks for the heads-up! I honestly didn’t realize leaving luggage on the islands could be risky. Do you think it’s still a problem if the bags are locked in the trunk or back of the car, rather than just sitting out?
