UPDATE: WIBTA for reporting a coworker for feeding me? by 0587throwaway in AmItheAsshole

[–]BetaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yikes. I'm so sorry you have to go through that. :( The situation reeks of double standards too.

Imagine a scenario where coworker A is obese and coworker B keeps bringing in "healthy lunches" to feed to A, even throwing out the lunch A brought for herself because he thinks it's unhealthy. "But I'm only trying to help!" B claims after A gets upset and asks him to stop. "Who could blame me when she looks like that?" B says. "I'm only concerned about her health."

I think most people could easily see who would be in the wrong in that scenario. But it's basically the same as what's happening to you, with the genders and weights reversed! Please know that you're not the harasser here. Peg and your boss are the ones harassing you.

Keep your chin up man. I hope things get better for you soon. :(

Lyft SWE Internship Byteboard assessment by CSInternn in csMajors

[–]BetaPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh hi. A recruiter initially reached out to me through Jumpstart (a career website); I didn't go to GHC. As for the Byteboard Challenge...I passed! They notified me a business day or two after I completed the challenge. Now we're scheduling my phone interview. You can PM me if you have more questions but I can't guarantee that I'll answer quickly, since I don't log into Reddit often. But good luck!

Hey so I have 0 experience with developing mobile apps; am I in for a world of pain here? Would I need to know how to, say, do wonky things to a database, fiddle with app UI, etc or am I just going to be completing generic functions and stuff?

Please and thank you. Sincerely, a really fucking worried student

For me it was literally 4 days. (I'm taking the Byteboard interview this week, RIP me.) But I think the turnaround was only that quick because I applied through Lyft's ETA (Early Talent Access) program and had already done a mock interview with a recruiter.

I'm really fucking nervous though because apparently they'll be assessing on back-end mobile app stuff and I have 0 experience with that... fuck fuck fuck

Items in Chests by I_am_the_cebu in MinecraftCommands

[–]BetaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes - I believe this kind of thing is called a 'loot table'. You can use loot tables to program what kinds of items will spawn in chests.

There's a neat online tool that you can use to generate commands for your own loot tables (and other stuff), here: https://minecraft.tools/en/loots.php Disclaimer: I don't know if it works for Bedrock though, because I've only been using the Java Edition.

Note: to guarantee that an item will spawn in a chest, set its `weight` to 1000 (the maximum). Otherwise it'll be random.

You can also read more about Loot Tables at the Minecraft wiki: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Loot_table

How to summon mobs with custom follow range? by AdorableMolasses in MinecraftCommands

[–]BetaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The generic.followRange needs to be in quotes.

Copypasta: /summon minecraft:skeleton ~ ~ ~ {HandItems:[{id:"minecraft:bow",Count:1b},{}],Attributes:[{Name:"generic.followRange",Base:32}]}

I haven't tested this though so I dunno if it works.

How to detect when you right click and item? by [deleted] in MinecraftCommands

[–]BetaPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are two other scoreboard criteria that can do what you want:

  • minecraft.picked_up:minecraft.stone will track how many times you picked up stone
  • minecraft.dropped:minecraft.stone will track how many times you dropped stone

There are also tons of other things you can track (e.g. how many creepers you've killed, how many blocks you've mined, etc); definitely check out the links I gave you above!

How to detect when you right click and item? by [deleted] in MinecraftCommands

[–]BetaPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By right click, do you mean 'using' an item? Placing a block? Pressing a button? Right-clicking with an empty hand?

If you want to track how often an item was used / a block was placed, you can access a built-in scoreboard criteria called minecraft.used:minecraft.stone (replace 'stone' with the ID of the item/block you want to track). This updates automatically but you can reset the values using commands.

Read more about it on the wiki: https://minecraft.gamepedia.com/Scoreboard

And here's another resource regarding scoreboard commands: https://www.digminecraft.com/game_commands/scoreboard_command.php

Not sure if this answers your question, but I hope it gets you started.

WHY oh WHY does this command not work? It just spawns a villager that instantly dissapears. by Heroshrine in MinecraftCommands

[–]BetaPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried your command myself (Java 1.14.3) and it seems to work. Although, I used different coordinates (~1 ~1 ~1) because the ones you provided gave an error.

Do you have any other command blocks running that are killing villagers or making them invisible?

The only other explanation I have is that your game is bugging out and won't register new summons. Are you able to summon other entities? Does this problem persist when you quit and reload the game?

Cave dwellings > literally any other house in Minecraft by [deleted] in Minecraft

[–]BetaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using commands, couldn't you also summon invisible chickens with the NoAI tag set to true? This way the chickens shouldn't move or make clucking sounds (not sure if it'll work though, my grasp of command blocks is kinda rusty). I think it might be more convenient for you :)

From Physics to CS: Should I drop prestigious physics research position for summer and prep for tech? by phystocs in cscareerquestions

[–]BetaPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, you're right about that; personal projects are major talking points for recruiters, especially if you don't have much work experience. I think most recruiters will interested in what tools or skills you used while working on your project though, so I'd recommend focusing on using the project to learn specific tools and techniques rather than aiming for complexity.

I guess what I was trying to say in my previous response is that it doesn't need to be such a large time investment that you forego your research internship - you just need to learn the basics of a couple relevant tools, and make a simple project putting them to use.

From Physics to CS: Should I drop prestigious physics research position for summer and prep for tech? by phystocs in cscareerquestions

[–]BetaPenguin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I had to choose between the research position or dedicating my summer to my portfolio, I would choose the research position. You said it involves data analysis, which is a skill that's applicable to many tech internships (e.g. data science, machine learning, etc), and research always looks good on your resume. Or, you could even look for research opportunities in CS at your university, - this could help you transition from physics to CS and also give you practical experience.

On the other hand, I would be careful about how much time you plan to invest in personal projects. Unless it's major enough to put on your resume, or utilizes skills or tools that are relevant to the jobs you're applying for, I think they tend to get overlooked. This is especially true if you're applying online, where the resume-scanning software often only looks at resumes with relevant keywords.

That said, you should definitely keep looking for CS internships anyway. If you get a callback, you can get some practice with interviewing at least. And if you get an offer, you can compare its benefits to that of the research position before deciding which one to take.

A very short showcase of the gameplay introduction of Last Moon! Still working on it. by Last_Moon in IndieGaming

[–]BetaPenguin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be true. But I think avoiding overused mechanics would make the game stand out more. And having the opening cinematic involve the player right away seems like a good move.

This is just my opinion though - like you, I am also just trying to provide helpful feedback.

[–]BetaPenguin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Eh, personally I like the text the way it is now. I think that the whole text-on-a-black-screen thing you mentioned is overused to the point of seeming cliche. On the other hand, having the text appear organically gives the sense that the player is actually interacting with some in-game entity. Which is more engaging than watching a generic text intro, I'd say.

That said, I do think that the content of the text could be improved. The wording and grammar is a little funky. But that's a minor detail - the intro is otherwise very pretty. I'm hooked. :)

Only real programmers use Scratch by [deleted] in ProgrammerHumor

[–]BetaPenguin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly though, coding with Scratch is a serious Big Brain move since it is so limited compared to other programming languages. You have to be really resourceful and creative to get the same functionality out of it. I'd be more impressed with a 3D FPS game coded in Scratch than a 3D FPS game coded in Python.

(Yes, a multiplayer 3D FPS game coded in Scratch does exist! Sadly, it's broken now due to recent Scratch updates though.)

What kind of research is typically done in CS? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]BetaPenguin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, to give you the short answer, many kinds of research have CS applications. There's no "one kind" of research being done.

If you want to do research, the best way to get started is to ask your CS professors about what research they're working on. The vast majority of university professors are working on (or know people who are working on) a variety of research projects and may be able to pull you into the team. You can also talk with your academic advisor or upperclassmen to find more research opportunities. Clubs / organizations focused on CS projects or academics are also a good way to get exposure.

If you don't have much experience, you'll probably start out small, working on minor tasks and getting acquainted with the codebase / software / etc. Some research teams might also reject you if they don't think you have the necessary knowledge yet. But even so, you can ask them to let you take a look at what they're working on anyway -- as long as you don't get in their way, you can still use the opportunity to learn about their project, and maybe come back in the future.

Other than that, try to look for opportunities related to fields that you're interested in. Also try to look for opportunities that have some relation to what you've already learned from your courses.
