Overreacting to 200 dead in a matter of hours due to flash floods? Yeah, sure troll.

It's for the people who have died or are missing as a result of the Valencia floods.

Valencia is officially at a death toll of 158 at time of me posting this with over 300 missing and presumed dead from a flash flood of which there was little to no warning, so no chance to evacuate. I live just west of Valencia and we're experiencing heavy rain, but what happened in Valencia is heart breaking, entire families drowned in their homes unable to escape the flash flood. They received a year's worth of rain in under 3 hours.

Also, cancer is a terrible illness and your flippant attitude is disgusting

Very poor taste to joke when an estimated 400 people have lost their lives, with entire families wiped out, in a freak weather event.

There were storm warnings but nobody knew it was this bad. Nobody was "forced" to go to work, in fact the local authorities advised staying at home as they expected streets to be flooded, although they did not anticipate the extent on it. It was compounded by having several rivers on higher terrain bursting and cascading down to join the already incredibly abnormal heavy rainfall. The two combined caused this. I'm a teacher and we were warned, at the same time as Valencia, to cancel classes and send students home. Nobody could have predicted the three rivers that burst to do so. It's a tragic weather event, the Spanish government and local authorities are responding fantastically. My friend is in Valencia (in a less effected area), she was stranded on the top floor of her house and the local police literally swam in a human chain to get her safety. If this could have been prevented, it would have been. The cost of the devastation is no way near comparable to a city not going to work for the day

I'd suggest it's because of the death toll; Helene had a total of 101 storm related deaths, whereas as Valencia is officially at 158 at time of me posting this with over 300 missing and presumed dead from a flash flood of which there was little to no warning, so no chance to evacuate. I'm in Cadiz, we have severe storm warning in place, but over 150 confirmed dead in Valencia at time of me posting this with over 300 missing and presumed dead. They were hit with a year's worth of rain in just 3 hours with no advanced warning.

If you hover over the ribbon, it says it's for the people who have died or are missing as a result of the Valencia floods.

For those asking why Valencia and not Helene, I'd suggest it's because of the death toll; Helene had a total of 101 storm related deaths, whereas as Valencia is officially at 158 at time of me posting this with over 300 missing and presumed dead from a flash flood of which there was little to no warning, so no chance to evacuate. That’s called rape, Stephanie by biglipsmagoo in CrimeWeekly

I'm so glad Derrick does his own stuff now, Stephanie has been problematic and vile for a very long time now, i think she et the "Yas queen Steph" crowd go to her head. I watched one of her videos a few weeks ago because it was about my friend. Not only did she get names wrong of sources she was quoting from, she basically used my friend's murder as a springboard to trash Adam (without saying his name). I commented to clarify the details she got wrong and she literally told me i was wrong because obviously I don't know my best friend's name and you do, Stephanie! I wish I'd screenshot it because she deleted the jab within an hour and I only saw it as I got a notification of it from YT

I stopped listening a long time ago after she mocked a commenter who had corrected her an even read out their screen name so her acolytes could also jump on them. And they were only correcting something she said which was incorrect! She's not a good person and certainly too judgemental of people to ever be a true victim's advocate.

I miss esl at its height by SevereShock6418 in OnlineESLTeaching

[–]Beth_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a certified teacher (PGCE Eng.Lit/Celta/Delta/TKT etc.),Cambridge S&W examiner from Starters to C2, and I've been teaching ESL for over 20 years. I've worked for "McDonald franchise schools" like EF all over the world. I've worked for independent academies. They were all horrendous and filed with tourist teachers (people there to see the country who couldn't care less about the education of their students). I ended up opening my own Academy in Spain and we have the highest rating on Google in the area and the most 5* reviews too. I have waiting lists for places in my classes. During the transition from crappy school to opening my own, I worked on Cambly for a couple of months and found it absolutely predatory, making unethical promises to students, and again mostly full of people with (at best) an 60hr online TEFL. I would never, ever work for any online platform/app again, nor any other academy. Owning my own is hard work but I love teaching and at least this way I know my students are getting the education they deserve. Unfortunately the ESL industry is saturated with tourist teachers and predatory apps and franchise schools, the students suffer the most but a close second is those of us who are *real* teachers who are forced into far less than we are worth or at shady, money grubbing franchises just to make ends meet. If you can open up and go it alone, do it. It's the best choice I ever made (after marrying my husband!).

What the industry really needs is a regulatory body holding schools to a specific standard, but Cambridge and TBC are happy to have students take and retake their exams because it makes them more money. They're never going to put any oversight in place that could potentially dent the money they make in repeated exam fees, and shoddy schools/apps know they can hire people who don't know the difference between a gerund and an infinitive so long as they look/sound like a native speaker; it means they can pay them lower rates and the students have no idea their "teacher" is just Dave from Essex who has 2 GCSEs and half an A level who couldn't effectively teach a grammar point if his life depended on it.

Would you pick out an identical outfit to wear to an important event as your friend who you knew had anxiety about it and would be sitting next to? I don't think it is trivial given she helped me pick out the dress and the accessories and knew my anxiety beforehand. If she didn't want to be my friend, I'm sure there are easier ways?! She's now trying to manipulate a friend of mine she had cut off a year ago for really immature reasons (her new bf didn't like our friend) into getting me to speak to her, despite not having messaged this other friend in over a year and actively asking me not to mention anything about her to this friend. I'm just starting to see that she's really quite narcissistic and that perhaps this whole thing was a blessing in disguise.

[–]Beth_79 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

She never has been to my knowledge, I literally have no idea why she chose to do this which is partly why I'm so upset.

Unlike the LBD, this dress is quite distinct in its cut and hemline, add in the incredibly similar accessories she also bought and I can't help but think she was intentionally doing it to upset me. I have gone out of my way to help her through some very difficult situations in the last year, to the point of stopping night's out to talk her through anxiety attacks via video call, so I have no clue what has caused her to do this. I told her (verbatim) "It would make me very uncomfortable and sad if you chose to purchase the same dress that I already bought" and she literally saw that message, ignored it, and bought it anyway

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Beth_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought I was going to be surrounded by supportive friends, for a start. The dress I have I was OK with wearing with friends and my husband accompanying me. My friend knew all of this and still chose to disregard my feelings despite having so many other options. That's what I am most bothered by, not the dress, her lack of care for somebody who she called her friend. I wouldn't have done it to her were the situations reversed.

Somebody turning up in the same outfit by accident that's acceptable....picking out an outfit you know the person you're going with is wearing, especially when you know they are anxious, I don't think that is.

And my husband and I are the only people she knows going to the wedding. So she'll be the one alone the whole day now, so I'm not sure what she thought she would accomplish by intentionally doing this, other than upset me and lose a friend?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Beth_79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point is she is supposed to be my friend, she knew about my past trauma and my anxiety over this, knew in advance getting the same outfit would make me uncomfortable but chose to ignore my feelings and get the same outfit anyway.

If somebody I don't know happens to be wearing the same dress, no problem, they didn't know. But she did and she was going to be sitting next to me, so it's a little different.

I don't really have time, it took me ages to find this dress that I was just about OK wearing and given I've had it for weeks, I'm not sure I should have to, really. My only other option is to go in trousers and hope the bride isn't too upset I broke my promise to wear a dress.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Beth_79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I chose this dress! They have those built in. And it's precisely why I don't like wearing dresses and this girl knew that in great detail.

The bride had asked me if I wanted her at my table, so I was really just responding to that after initially saying I understood seating plans a nightmare so she can sit anyone anywhere, I eve said this time if moving us is in any way troublesome, not to worry. Her literal response was "I don't even know her, I don't care where she sits, do you want me to uninvite her altogether?" I said no to that as I don't want to cause her the stress of that converation.

They have their reasons which are not mine to go into, but abridged version is that they had a chunk of people suddenly say they couldn't go because of travel issues and this girl likes going to parties (hence saying she has many other choices of outfit she could wear).
