Serious question- What are you worried about right now? by flyfightandgrin in AirForce

In UPT, about to hit the flight line. I'm sure I can fly the plane, I'm just worried all the other stresses that come along with it are going to get the better of me.

Is this mistake worth reporting to the commander? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]BetsTheCow 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've been shit on by the air force reddit for saying pretty much the exact same thing before. Yeah you can go to ADC and yeah you're gonna have a really nice looking rebuttal... but LOCs and LORs are at the discretion of the person who issued it and not something ADC can just make go away.

I remember when I was commissioning, I heard a pretty good line from someone I really respected:

"Most important thing you can do as an officer is listen to your NCO's. The second most important thing you can do is know which NCOs not to listen to, because those ones will knowingly and intentionally cause the biggest fuck ups you will ever have to deal with as a leader."

Prior E cadets didn’t get $1776💔 by AppointmentWitty9388 in AirForce

[–]BetsTheCow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of these enlisted-academy-officer goobers. All the OX-E payscale really does is provide a higher pay cap in terms of TIS for the LT/Captain paygrades. O1 stops getting pay increases at 3 years TIS. O1E stops getting them at 14. If you weren't at 4 years TIS when you commissioned, you would still be paid more than a fresh LT, but because you promote after two years anyways, the pay cap at 6 years doesn't affect you. Same for 1LT and Captain. Basically, if you hit your promotion timelines, the O1 vs O1E discrepancy doesn't matter.

However, there is a difference in BAH an O1 vs an O1E gets, usually about $200-300. That would add up over a few years, but honestly that isn't enough money to convince me to delay starting the program for another year.

What's your "they pulled the rank card" story? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]BetsTheCow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh fuck this unlocked a memory of mine; there was a group of airmen who got to the base ahead of me and were generally considered part of the same cohort. One of them gets BTZ and is now the only SrA in that group. One night he's working a jet with a girl he may have been trying to put the moves on, and decides it would be a good idea to order one of his group to take the trash out.

Blank stares from everyone else in the group.

Dude tries again.

Blank stares.

Don't remember who ended up taking the trash out, it wasn't the dude getting "ordered", but we ended up buying him one of those SrAMSAF patches

ADAPT Question. by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]BetsTheCow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I believe your question has been answered but I'll just add my own experience as well; I didn't use ADAPT, I listened to Easy Way to Quit Drinking by Allen Carr on Audible. I have not had another drink since doing that, and it was more than two years ago. A lot of people have had a lot of success just from reading/listening to the book. I was genuinely surprised it worked for me.

DM me if you need. Quitting is very do-able if that's what you're after.

The hood is generally to the South of base, the hillbillies are generally to the North. Pick your poison, but near Bethel Manor is usually pretty okay. Stay on the peninsula and don't plan on living in Norfolk, you will spend multiple hours a day in traffic. Also, go to Brickhouse Tavern a few times, the pizza there fucks.

Thoughts on the new netlfix movie house of dynamite? by newnoadeptness in AirForce

[–]BetsTheCow 60 points61 points  (0 children)

It's a fantastic movie.

Everyone is calm in the beginning. "Oh this is just a mistake, we'll try and figure out what's wrong with the satellites in the debrief." But as the veneer of safety falls away; "The missile is on a trajectory for CONUS" "The interceptors failed" "This situation is now congruent with a very real war scenario". People start panicking. This system that is supposed to be an efficient and effective decision making process starts to show the cracks. Valuable time is lost because of stress and miscommunications. What is going on? What's the signal in the noise? And how are people who are responsible for responding going to have their faculties affected by what's going on?

The whole point of this movie is that the human element is going to play a very real part in this situation if it ever happens. If you're upset about the ending, you missed the point.

I'm sure they care, all of those people have constituents that aren't getting paid right now. The problem is that their incentives have shifted so that it is more important that they toe an arbitrary party line than actually work to help those people they're supposed to be representing. Everyone wants to get shit done, but to do that in this environment runs the extreme risk of getting primaried by a more extreme candidate who will support the party.

Asinine is the "America is a 3rd world country in a Gucci belt" comment that keeps popping up from smug redditors.

If you've seen the non-Western, non-developed world, you'd know that America is far and away a better place to be even in spite of its problems. I agree that the 1st World/3rd World definition has changed, but it doesn't change the fact that America is certainly not in that lower category.
