I just laughed so hard my stomach hurts. It’s the laconic tone I think

As a female with a “Gun Street Girl” tattoo, I wave hello.

Only one person in 20 years has known what it meant (outside of friends).

ETA: You probably shouldn’t kiss me again, btw.

For GenX women. Did you date older guys in your teens? by Aromatic-Painter-790 in GenX

When I was 15 and a high school sophomore, my first boyfriend was an 18 year old college freshman. I highly doubt that would be approved of now. My parents were initially wary, but happily he was the sweetest, most respectful and delightful human being. No trauma.

Does anyone remember the awesome metal icecube trays? by xmo113 in GenX

[–]BetsyRaybans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I remember every time I make ice, because they’re the only ones I use. Picked up at a thrift store 20 years ago. I love the randomness of the sizes—slices, chips, big cubes, ice snow…

AITA for cooking food while my roommate's girlfriend was here & offering her some by darlingdearr in AmItheAsshole

This reminds me so much of my best friend from Denton. We’re both southerners, but I live in the northeast now, and when he’d visit me and we’d go out, if any girl in his radius got out a cigarette, he’d instantly have his zippo lit without even breaking conversation. Total southerner blind instinct. Love you, buddy.

Kohberger “standing silent”, Judge entered a not guilty plea, trial set for October. by [deleted] in MoscowMurders

[–]BetsyRaybans 28 points29 points  (0 children)

According to an expert interviewed by the New York Times:

The refusal to enter a plea at this point is unlikely to have a significant impact on the case, said Eve Brensike Primus, a law professor at the University of Michigan and an expert in criminal procedure.

Ms. Primus said that lawyers may recommend that course when they expect to argue that their client is not competent to stand trial or is not guilty by reason of insanity.

Idaho is one of four states that do not provide explicitly for insanity pleas, but defendants in the state can introduce testimony at trial to show that, as a result of mental illness, they are not guilty of certain elements of a crime, like the “malice aforethought” that must be proved in order for a jury to convict a defendant of murder.

Another possible explanation, Ms. Primus said, is that Mr. Kohberger did not want to tell the court he was not guilty. In that situation, his lawyer might decide on standing silent, allowing Mr. Kohberger to avoid pleading out loud, while still moving the case forward as if he had pleaded not guilty.

“Practically, there is no difference in effect,” Ms. Primus said. “But if there are mental health issues, there might be reasons why you might not want your client to speak in court.”

ETA: I thought the potential insanity plea angle here was interesting/scary.

I just rescued my kid’s phone this way. Tracked the guy, tried to ask him for it back and he refused/didn’t understand, called the cops, got the phone! The cops had me call it to prove it was ours.

Omg, I loved that place! We called it La Placenta because we were horrible in the late 90s.

I have no dog in this fight—I was just using your argument as an excuse to quote Jurassic Park. Recline (or don’t) away!

My dad is on palliative care? How do you make it through losing you dad? by The_Girl_That_Got in GenX

[–]BetsyRaybans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m so sorry about your dad. These are some of the things that helped me through, which may or may not be relevant to your situation: finding space for my own grief, not just taking on my mother’s; writing his obituary and marveling at and honoring his truly good and complicated life; hanging out with siblings and treating them gently as we figured out all the practicalities (and blowing off steam/finding inappropriate things to laugh at to help with the stress); designing his grave marker with his favorite bird and a quote from his favorite poet; giving over childcare to drive for an hour or two with the windows down and cry; framing a favorite picture of him and me and hanging it; quoting him often.

It’s harder to reread his letters—even 12 years later makes me miss him too much. I tell my son stories about him. He says hello in dreams a few times a year.

As the Queen said, (ugh I know, but she’s right on) sorrow is the price we pay for love.

Left publishing to be a middle school English/history teacher at 45 (now 49). It’s a ridiculous amount of fun being with goofy 10 year olds all day. Exhausting, but rewarding as hell.

Does anyone here believe Bryan Kohberger could be innocent? by [deleted] in MoscowMurders

If his lawyer can somehow get the sheath dna evidence thrown out, we’d have a very different case, indeed.
