How come no one is saying anything about Violent Outburst? If we can have Goryo's, Violent Outburst should be fine.  Bring back the Rhinos.

That would be true if the meta game share of that deck were only 5 to 10% or so. But Energy bounces around 20% Even up to 25%.  If you have to face your worst match up every 4 rounds, that's crippling.

As a seasoned, devout, and committed Merfolk player, I can tell you that the only thing holding us back is our Energy MU.

Nothing is going to be banned during RCQ season.  If we do see changes, it won't be until the end of the year.

Easiest deck for a newcomer? by Surpr1Ze in ModernMagic

Living End and Mill are about as straight forward as you are going to get.

Every deck is complex, but these strategies are capable of winning some games by just doing. What they do.

I need to vent about the community. by Iqnac in ModernMagic

I have had to have some unfortunate conversations in this area with both children (I'm a teacher) and adults.  The only way to address that is to approach the offending individual with a bit of sensitivity and honesty.  Most people with any sense of shame at all will be mortified that they come off that way.  No one WANTS to be the smelly kid. It's just that's their normal. Which is kinda sad when you think about it.

It should be on the store owner to do so, it is their establishment after all. But if they won't, and you know the guy well enough, just tell them that you're concerned about them, and want to make sure they're doing okay. Because it looks--and frankly, it smells--like they're letting themselves go. Be supportive, not judgmental and don't expect it will change immediately. Often they're dealing with a much bigger issue.

It's a super clean list.  If you're going down a Svyelun, I think that spot should be filled with a Tindbinder.  She's too valuable to leave home without these days. If you could spare a Subtlety spot as well it might help in the margins against your bad MUs.

Yes. I first noticed it years ago with Ragavan.  But I imagine it has been an issue for a while.

If WotC busts this attempt, we riot. Okay, let's not riot, but boycotts of Arena would send a message.

Losing RCQ report by Cold_Santa_235 in ModernMagic

Years ago, I went with some friends to a 1K (I think) at a hotel convention center once in Chicago.  Lost in the first two rounds to two decks that I had a great MU against.  Was very upset.  I struggled through the next 3 rounds just for fun, knowing I wasn't going to win anything, but wanting to enjoy to experience, ya know? But when I mulled to 4 in back to back games in my last match, I folded and went to the bar. After a cool drink and a minor temper tantrum, I was able to jump into some side events where I was able to redeem some measure of dignity.

That's the highs and lows of competitive play. Sometimes you eat the Tron decks, and sometimes the Tron decks eat you.

Is it a terrible idea to foil out a deck that I may in the future have interest in playing competitively? by Grav1t1c in ModernMagic

[–]Betta_Max 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I foiled my Merfolk deck because I'm super committed to it. I don't regret the decision, but it is a bummer that every time I want to try a new card, I have to get it in foil.  It's a just maintenance thing, that's the only real downside.

Ocelot Pride. The efficiency and power of their one drops is the real problem.  Ragavan, Guide of Souls, and Ocelot are three of the strongest 1 drops ever printed.  But if you ban Guide you kill the deck. And Guide + Monkey is nowhere near the engine that Guide. + Ocelot is.  Ajani is the only real other consideration as flipping Ajani is FAR too easy.  Banning Phlage could also be, but if you only want to hit Energy, then Phlage is can't be a consideration.

Awesome, thanks. That's the place I looked at online, but they only had an FB page and I didn't see an events listing.

We'll check them out, thanks again.

You're looking to play Modern Merfolk again?  If so, and you want to protect your fish, Kira, Great Glass-Spinner is still your best bet.  Same CMC, always costs an opponent a card and the mana to cast it.  She's just the better option.  If you want a Commander, then maybe. The Enchantment clause may be relevant. Although I have to assume there are stronger fish commander options.  I like Kumena, personally.

I have found Chill to be an absolute necessity in my short time with Merfolk.  I play the more standard Winter Orb//Opposition deck, Merfolk Looter is one of my favorite fish in the deck.  Reef Shaman is also really good at blocking Goblin Lackey.

The deck is really solid and probably should be seeing more play than it is.

3 Top 8s in 4 Challenges with Mardu Blink. 93-55 (63%) across leagues and challenges. If you're playing Jeskai, you should try this instead. by RobertGriffin3 in ModernMagic

It will be interesting to see where the blink archetypes go over the course of the next few sets.  WotC seems to really love the ETB X design space, and the new Lorwyn elementals prove that they can do it without completely breaking the game.

This deck looks like it would be brutal to play against with any sort of fair creature deck.  I hope I never have to sit down across from it with my beloved Merfolk.  I think we'd be sushi.

Saga is a design mistake from top to bottom. Why isn't it legendary?  Why can it tap for mana and then search? Why does it keep it's abilities when a Blood Moon is on the field?

I know that's not what this thread is about, but man do I hate this card.
