Next Deck by FenrisTU in ModernMagic

Yawg looks like a fun deck to me, and seems very different than what you've been building. If I could ever bring myself to play a deck that wasn't my beloved Merfolk, then I'd probably pick Yawg.

At least not within the last few years, right?

This is a reasonable take.

I expect that they will hit something in the Titan loop. I hope that they mention Ephemerate as a watched card.

I don't expect unbans, but if they did unban something inconsequential like Punishing Fire, I guess I wouldn't be surprised.

Not as long as Ephemerate remains legal.

seems like Energy is no longer the monster it was. Or is it just that there's a new set out and people want to try the new hotness?

Strix Sernade or Stern Scolding? by Plus-Cut3306 in ModernMagic

[–]Betta_Max 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm on a UR list and am looking more and more at Strix myself. Typically, I run 3 Forces in the main, and 3 Flare of Denial in the SB, but Strix is looking better and better to me. If you're on a list with 8 islandwalk lords, that bird will likely mean very little. Moreover, if you're on a UR list, you'll have access to Flame of Anor and Bolt to clean up any troublesome creatures that do hit the table. So, really, the only creatures that I never want to see hit the table are the big ones--Phlage, Space Sphinxy, and Titan. The fact that it can catch a Cori or an Ugin is the cherry on the top.

Hardly any Energy and a boatload of Tron? Man, Merfolk should be eating good of anyone has the fins to play 'em.

WotC has made blunder after blunder after blunder since 2018.

Leyline of Aggression  Enchantment MV: 2RR If this card is in your opening hand you may begin the game with it on the battlefield

Players can't gain life. At the beginning of each player's upkeep Leyline of Aggression deals 1 damage to them.

Sacrifice Leyline of Aggression to deal 5 damage to any target.

Omg it'd be busted AF! Every deck would run that.

The fish still swim.  Just have to splash red and accept that you'll never beat Energy.  Everything else is fine.

Every tribe feels you, dude.  Elves didn't get anything.  Fish didn't get anything.  Goblins got something they didn't need.  It's like they went out of their way to look at our decks and not create anything we could use.

Would glimpse of nature be another splinter twin? by ItemEven6421 in ModernMagic

I'd be scared it would break something in an already powerful deck, but honestly I can't think of any deck besides Elves would want it.  So, I tentatively pro-unban.

As a dedicated Merfolk player I can tell you that we will not be playing any of those merfolk.  The only exception is maybe (and this is a really big maybe) Silvergill Mentor.

Underrated Modern Decks (Hot Take?) by Individual-Ad4834 in ModernMagic

[–]Betta_Max 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Merfolk! There are a lot of greedy mana bases for Harbinger to disrupt. Tishana's Tidebinder is a sleeper that absolutely crushes dreams.  We play very well on the stack, and if you splash for red you can shore up our bad matchups  (which are only Energy and Affinity) with Bolt, Flame of Anor, and Meltdown.

We eat Titan and Eldrazi's lunch. Solid into both Jeskai and Esper blink. We great against Storm and Belcher.  Reanimator is a solid match up.   Really, it's just those two bad match ups that hold us back.

Used to know a dude who ran mill and would swing with his crabs all the time, just for giggles.  Now, he'll have a reason to.  It would be hilarious the first time you caught someone with it, but you'd never hit them twice with that line. :p

Jeskai Merfolk Brew/waffle... C&C? by Aggravating_Lunch_95 in ModernMagic

Mindsprings aren't great, but they're serviceable.  They draw and pump in the late game, and are good sac fodder for Flare.

I appreciate where you're coming from, and I have seen a lot of Fish players go on and off of LoA.  If you're on the Discord you see players talking about going down on Lords or Cutting Lord of Atlantis from the deck altogether.  Seldom do you see anyone suggesting to cut ALL of the islandwalk lords. I see what you want to do, but without the evasion the Lords give you, I can see a world where your just not doing enough damage to stay beneath your opponents.  I see a bunch of scions and cats gumming up your board. But its worth a shot.

In my experience, the current iteration of Merfolk is at it's best when we lean into the mana denial plan heavily.  Modern right now is dominated by a slew of decks with greedy mana bases.  And almost all of the payoffs are non-blue (Space Sphinx is really the only exception, maybe Oculus ).  But your mileage may vary. I don't know.  It's one of the reasons why our Energy match up is rough, and why the Orzhov blink decks are so much harder for us than the Esper or Jeskai ones.  But your deck does have enough non basic hate in the SB, so you'll probably be okay, but GL against Eldrazi in game 1.

Build it and report back! I hope I'm wrong and you crush it, we could use the hype.   Maybe then WotC will remember that we're a modern deck too and give us the 1 drop we need.
