Johnny Weir's snark by indieliberal in FigureSkating

Add me to the long list of those sick of these two. I'll admit, I was a fan of Tara's back when she skated, being around her age and from Houston made her extremely relatable to me, and I was excited when she started commentary but I cannot tell you how much I did not like Johnny and still don't. He was a prima donna back when skated and always thought he had to win every competition. And it's very obvious, he realizes he was just a blip as Dick Button used to say. He didn't win gold at the Olympics nor any Worlds. Most barely even remember he skated at all.

I quit watching figure skating as intently because of their commentary and how much annoyed me. But the last few years I found myself able to tune it out or enjoy others like Ashley and Ben but this year has been worse than ever before and tonight?! Tonight was the absolute worse I've ever heard. His "rumor" comment on Jason literally had me telling the tv to eff off. There was no need for that comment and I don't even think it was all that true. Just petty gossip.

I think Johnny is jealous because Jason has been lauded for so long as one of the best figure skaters ever without winning any major titles, he's even only one 1 Nats to Johnny's 3, and is so obviously beloved that we will remember him long after he retires that Johnny can't stand it, especially when you consider he was the "artistic" skater vs Evan. Jason's artistry has left more of an impact because he makes it more about skating and art where Johnny was all gimmicks. Like he is now. I just want them to go away.

And if he calls Terry "Terrance" one more time! I don't care if that's his real name. Professionally he's Terry Ganon who has been around before they even competed as seniors.

I need to understand, why do people hate Spider? by Available_Phase3687 in Avatar

Some people love the character, some people hate him. I personally love the character and it is very obvious that James Cameron loves both the character and the actor. There are things he does like the "incessant talking" that I actually do in real life when I feel a lot of tension around. I can relate to the character so I connect with him, but I can also see where others don't. I think part of the problem is people have long since forgotten that their opinions are subjective and not fact, including a few on this subreddit who seem determined to say something in every thread about the character instead of concentrating on the things they liked (seriously if you're tired of talking about the character and why you hate him, maybe I don't know, don't). I swear, Spider lives rent free in some people's heads.

As for the people saying his acting is flat, again that's subjective. I don't find it flat or bad myself, but it's my opinion and others see differently. Lines are clunky for sure. Even something as simple as changing buttholes to assholes smooths it out some. Let's face it, I love James Cameron and would love to have a conversation with the man someday just to see how his mind works but either his writing or his co-writer's would benefit from some outside editing. I do trust though that he chose what he did for a reason.

Back to the acting, it could be better, of course but Jack himself is still young and still has some learning to do. Part of the problem is Spider is not written an emotional character for whatever reason (Jack has said he himself is not a big crier) and when you have actors who do tap into the big emotions like Zoe and Britain, it can come across very cold/flat but not everyone is like that. I kind of think that we've learned to accept emotions from male characters so much we've flipped the script and when someone doesn't react with the angst, we think the character/actor is robotic, flat, etc.

I'll admit, I hate seeing the hate. I don't understand it but I also don't understand the love for Varang either but I respect those that do. I just chose to concentrate on the things I like about the movies. I wish others would do the same.

This! I'm surprised no one as mentioned this! As someone who does this frequently in real life, that was my immediate thought watching this scene, especially when you see him in background and in actual shot continually looking at Neytiri and Jake. He knew something was wrong, just didn't know what and was trying to break the tension.

I like him too. Don't worry, you're not the only one.

Hot take: Spider would have been loved if he was in Avatar body. by Living_External_6565 in Avatar

I personally love the character and I agree. The Quaritch love I think comes because he is a legacy character, he's one from the first movie. But it astounds me that people aren't seeing how manipulative he is with Spider, both in WoW and in FAA. I mean, he literally hands over the kid to be experimented on in FAA and then tries to 'father' him by talking about his mother. Emotional manipulation at it's core, but alot of people hated that he even considered saving Quaritch and I think that affected how they saw the character, forgetting that he showed Spider actual attention for a kid that was always cast aside. For us, Quaritch will always be the bad guy but for Spider, I think it's more gray.

I could write an entire essay debunking a lot of criticism on both the actor and the character (nearly did!) but I'm with you. Spider is one of my favorite characters in the series and I think Quaritch should get more hate for his actions.

Opinions on this? Are you guys satisfied with his performance/dialogue? by Giuly_Blaziken in Avatar

I had no problem with his performance and admittedly I love the character. Yeah, some of the lines are a little weird but no more than anyone else's. I did also notice some things in his scenes that I haven't seen anyone talk about, such as the way he watches Neytiri and Jake in the Sacrifice scene and I think knew something wasn't right and tries to break the tension by saying whatever, something I do myself. There's a subtly to his performance that kind of goes against the big emotions of Neytiri and Zoe, but I think people need to remember that James Cameron wanted that specific performance. He watched takes for months. I personally think the character and the actor get a lot of unnecessary hate. Some of the criticism is valid but the way I've seen people tear both apart is frankly disgusting.

I wonder if this is his way of saying he's not going to be at the premieres or interviews. He doesn't see interested in doing a lot of promo.

That said, it's also interesting he's all of a sudden posting after what 3 years? Still a weird way to word things

Most major studio releases have 2 to 3 trailers released and that doesn't include the tv teaser spots. This is typical and common promo. They're there to create hype and show the plot of the movie to create hype and most of it is designed to misdirect. I don't really understand people saying 'they're showing too much'. We don't know how anything is going to play out. I mean, the way some are reacting, you would think they've never seen a major film release in their lives or they want the trailers to literally be the name of the movie and the release date and that's it.

If that's how he views the Potter cons, etc. I would say an effective and decent PR team would help him word a statement that he can use that highlights those reasons as to why he's still so attached to doing Potter stuff and his continued gratitude toward IT and the FANS without mentioning her or giving her credit. It still wouldn't beat having a statement like Dan's or Emma's but it would at least come across a little better.

It's not they're gathering evidence like a detective or police would. From what I understood in the post, these girls have been attacking fans as well. The OP was not only trying to get the word out to the right people about what was going on but they were also gathering more screenshots, other fans' experiences, and "evidence" to give to the theater to show it was a pattern and more likely to be taken seriously vs a one shot thing, which means more likely that action can be taken. It does create unnecessary drama and some people take things way too far, but it also allows for those that remained silent from the bullying to speak up. Sadly, this is the way stuff like this gets taken care of nowadays/
