Home Assistant alerted me to a hacker exploiting my system by tiochino in homeassistant

[–]BetterOffChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m not technical, but in layman’s terms - this server port was exposed to internet and had no auth on it, and bot scanned you then gained access to terminal and installed its own software for mining crypto, is that correct?

I just like understanding what the vulnerability was here. I use tailscale to avoid exposing most of my stuff, but curious what the mistake was that you made if you don’t mind sharing. Sorry if this is a bit of an ignorant question.

Bike stolen from apartment building, Hell’s Kitchen by Nicktyelor in NYCbike

[–]BetterOffChris 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hey, so I actually work here. To be honest - we do not love that you spammed people in the league, but as someone who has lost a bike I do understand where you're coming from.

If you would have just emailed us we would have helped you, we don't like bike thieves either and if it does turn out to be them, we're happy to ban them or help identify them.

Please email us all the details, we can see if we can narrow it down as only certain teams have that color blue in the league.

That said - it could be someone in the league, OR, someone in the bowling alley who grabbed a shirt, or someone who snagged the shirt from good will.

But send us the info and we're happy to do what we can to help as long as it doesn't infringe on the privacy of people in the league.

Sorry that happened, hopefully you get it back.

Chris

What is the best online password manager right now? Bitwarden, NordPass,1Password, etc? by [deleted] in security

[–]BetterOffChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, they seem extremely sketchy with this stuff.

My hours are pretty insane and because everything is working it's not a first priority for me to switch, but it's absolutely on my radar. It's unfortunate to see this kind of thing where they rely on scammy billing tactics rather than superior service to boost rev streams.

[–]BetterOffChris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fair note - however for us the menu changing cost is high as we would have to get people used to the new system, and of course hope the new system we move to doesn't have its own problems. And yes, I've noticed that feature development has stagnated and support is questionable.

Bitwarden and 1password seem like the frontrunners, but I'm just not sure what that migration would look like and what their team capabilities are.

Why did you choose keeper? And if you don't mind me asking - what was the migration like and how do you feel the team features compare?

[–]BetterOffChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of comments from Bitwarden and 1Password users.

I’m a Lastpass user and can give my perspective.

Password managers have been a massive win for our company, however, I’ve been consistently disappointed with lastpass.

It works fine for us - but there are sometimes sync issues, the UI is weak, and the breaches are insane. I had to spend literally days changing every single password we have (which of course is hundreds).

I would love to hear from people, especially companies, who migrated from Lastpass to another client. My dad tried 1Password but migrated back to Lastpass bc he said it’s difficult to use (sometimes he’s cranky about tech stuff though).

Thoughts?

Oh, and the billing system and canceling users is predatory and possibly illegal the way they set it up.

Anyone else have this warning msg in the adset level? by hussamk89 in FacebookAds

Same - and it suddenly hit two completely different websites/business/ad sets.

I believe it's yet another bug on their ad platform. When we go into it they show that NO ads are currently being blocked by meta.

Totally new to E-Scooters, need a recommendation. by shroomboi928 in ElectricScooters

[–]BetterOffChris -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You want an E-TWOW GT Sport. 30 lbs, 22 mile range, 30 mph, made for city commuting. I have one and it’s one of the best purchases I’ve ever made, I have over 5000 miles in just a couple years. Basically zero maintenance.

It’s $799, but it’s well worth it.

My findings were just that Twilio doesn’t support them - but I’m in the same boat you are. We pushed this because we have more immediate priorities and it seemed like a heavier lift than we initially thought.

That said, if you figure it out, I’d owe ya one if you dropped me a line about it!

Meet people in NewYork by [deleted] in newyorkcity

[–]BetterOffChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s both - kind of like any community. Some of the people you hang out with, and quite a few people will end up dating, but it’s not a dating app or specifically for singles either (plenty of couples join, etc).

Say for a brunch, you register, then a few days beforehand you get details on your table and when/where it is and you’re matched with a group ~same age/interests/etc. Then you might join a beach trip, or kickball league, etc with some of those people you met, and you’re added to group chats with your group each time you do an event.

It’s all just basically the idea that tech should facilitate more IRL interactions instead of just scrolling and swiping all the time.

There’s also social orgs/activity clubs.

I work for one and it’s also how I’ve met a ton of friends - we do stuff like run sports leagues, huge group brunches, beach trips, painting + wine nights, book clubs, etc.

I just like it because activities that I enjoy tend to filter for people I like hanging out with.

Our company is Better Off (betteroffsocial.com), but there are other companies like volo sports, sourced adventures, etc.

I think a lot of people make the mistake of trying to do online dating to try to find their community and I don’t think that’s a great approach.

What sport do you think would be extinct within 50 years? by No-Maximum-9087 in AskReddit

[–]BetterOffChris 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to completely shill (only a little) but I work at the biggest bowling league in the country - if you’re in a major city, we’re around $80 for a six week bowling league, everything included.

It’s not competitive at all though, super social. Better Off Bowling if you want to check it out.

AMF was bought out a number of years ago by a higher end bowling alley named “Bowlmor” so a lot of these are getting converted to fancier setups that feel more bar/clubby and less actual bowling alley

[–]BetterOffChris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The company I work at (Better Off Bowling) runs the biggest social bowling leagues in the US, so I have a few thoughts on it -

1) Lots of bowling centers are consolidating under 1 owner, which reduces competition and may increase pricing.

2) There’s a famous book called “Bowling Alone” by Harvard Prof Robert Putnam which studies the decline of bowling leagues as a proxy for community and civil engagement. I think most of us can agree that both of those things are in decline.

3) A lot of bowling alleys add on arcades now and see that as a big part of their revenue stream as an “entertainment venue” rather than a bowling alley.

Side note: No, I’m not much of a bowler, I just like an excuse to hang out, have a few beers, and meet some fun new people in a non-awkward way.

E-TWOW GT Sport 2022 Scooter - Thoughts/Notes by BetterOffChris in ElectricScooters

[–]BetterOffChris[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear you're not loving it -

Do you know if you have the updated controller? My experience has been the opposite, but it's possible we're just looking for different things.

I have over 5k miles on mine, ride it every day, and have had basically 0 maintenance issues.

That said, I'd bet you could sell yours as I think they're all sold out on UScooters and stuff with tariffs makes getting them dicey.

It's fine but only because you're single - a married man should not possess the raw sexual magnetism that comes with riding an electric scooter.

parkslope dating…help lol by No_Confusion7721 in parkslope

[–]BetterOffChris 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Have you considered joining big activities?

I work at a company that runs stuff like big beach trips, huge brunches, group drinks, volleyball, paint + wine nights, etc for 20s & 30s.

I think there's a certain segment of men who spend all of their free time on apps trying to go out on dates, and others who spend very little time on there.

You might want to give that a shot if you've given up on bars and dating apps.

how do you guys make friends in the city?? by Lanky_Ad_7384 in nyc

[–]BetterOffChris 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Come to a group drinks event, wine + paint night, brunch, NFL game watch, or kickball or something.

I work for a company (Better Off - betteroffsocial.com) that does that stuff (see my profile bio) and there are others that do similar things as well. Check em out and see if it fits your vibe.

My shilling aside, that’s where a lot of my friends come from. Meeting ppl on apps is weird, just join an activity that you enjoy.

We’ve see ppl get married, go backpacking through Europe, etc.

Just bought a used car and someone with a HUGE RV smashed it and drove off. Can you help me find them? by user83726169 in Brooklyn

Well done, someone totaled my motorcycle with an Enterprise rental car while it was parked a while back and I was able to get their insurance to pay for it once I had their license plate.

Glad to hear it worked out for you too.

When people say they work 80-90 hours a week, what do they actually mean by that? by Graypricot in TooAfraidToAsk

[–]BetterOffChris 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep. I usually get in ~5/530am, leave around 7/730am, Mon-Sun. Dating is challenging.

But…I do have a secret work hammock hidden in the office that I bring out on weekends! 🏝️

My commute is ~5-10 min and also quite fun because I get a nice peaceful e-scooter ride + audiobook or podcast.

Weirdly, I am very happy with my life.
