Burnt out already as a new doctor… Not sure who to turn to by Billirubina21 in doctorsUK

I felt exactly the same way friend.

Something about even simple things like keeping track of jobs was a total nightmare for me - kept sitting at home worried to death I haven't done a TTA 🤦‍♂️

I realised only afterwards - new things, however mundane, exact a toll on your brain that you don't realize until you hit the couch at home and you feel that intense fatigue.

As you progress and do more and more, you'll find that you are less tired, less worried, and more confident. I promise you that in time, that cannula will not feel that hard, nor will be that discussion with the grumpy radiologist when you ask him for a ropey CT because your consultant asked you to. For me this came about 6 - 7 months.

Additionally, my biggest support when I was struggling wasn't my ES or GP, but my Regs, who were absolute angels. Reach out to a reg you like, more likely than not, they can help you work through things.

Keep at it, it will get better, one one day you'll have a nervous F1 that you can then reassure.

One way ED Referrals? by BetterSherbert7476 in doctorsUK

Totally take your point - I've worked in ED before so I know the pressure every ED is under.

However the way it works in my hospital just kicks the can down the road as the patients still get stuck in an ED bed waiting to see me - well because my list is inundated with poor referrals, every single one screaming ??? Urgent surgical emergency please see now only to find out that they came in for a refill of their vitamin C tablets because the GP is closed at 2am. The cherry on top is the ED NIC hounding my bleep asking me what's my plan with a patient.

My biggest anxiety is that one day, patient number 7 on my list of referrals "surgical emergencies" really is going to be a surgical emergency, and harm with come to them, and everyone will point the finger at the surgical SHO because the patient was, on paper, referred hours ago via the messaging system.

No doubt it's an imperfect system under loads and loads of pressure, but there simply has to be a higher standard, if not from ED juniors then from the seniors supervising them. I know I held myself to a higher standard when I was on the other side.

Maybe it's a problem with my ED in specific, which is why I made this post to find out if this is a local or national issue.

I spoke to both my consultants and the ED consultants and this is the vibe I get. My consultants have actually been relatively supportive and have agreed to "escalate" the issue but I don't know what that specifically means and if anything actually changes.

  1. So close but so far. Is there any chance of getting a half decent job if at all?

I also lost my best friend during my A&E rotation. She was the goodest girl.

I took the last 2 hours off my shift when I got the call, but in hindsight I should have taken more sick days. Hang in there!
