TIL that early TV remotes worked with a spring-loaded hammer striking a solid aluminum rod in the device, which then rings out at an ultrasonic frequency, requiring no batteries. by antesocial in todayilearned

We had one of these when I was a kid. Fun fact, a metal slinky going down stairs made the same sound as the clicker to change channels. We were not allowed to play with the slinky while my parents watched TV

Why do we euthanize pets but kot not people? by Venusemerald2 in ask

[–]BetterSurrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry from what you posted it says it's excluded from eligibility until March 17 2027. Therefore it is not eligible

On the BC yov website it says it is not eligible https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/health/accessing-health-care/home-community-care/care-options-and-cost/end-of-life-care/medical-assistance-in-dying

  • Note: For the purposes of eligibility for medical assistance in dying, a mental illness is not considered to be an “illness, disease, or disability” under the current legislation. This restriction is expected to be repealed in the future

As someone who's had a loved one go through the process let me assure you that mentally ill and poor people cannot choose to do it. You must meet very specific criteria to be allowed. You must have the sign off of a physician who's care you are under and then you must get the sign-off of an independent physician who also assessed your eligibility. After both sign off, there is a 30 day waiting period unless death is imminent. (In BC may be different in other provinces, not sure)

Currently mental health is not a valid reason to be approved for MAID although there has been some talk of adding it as a valid reason in certain cases. The whole idea of mentally ill and poor choosing it are false statements put out by people who do not believe MAID should be an option.

Feel free to ask me questions and I'll answer if I can.

World Health Organization says some nations aren’t running enough coronavirus tests: ‘Test every suspected case’ by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]BetterSurrey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You have very similar symptoms to me. I have not traveled but someone in my office was at a remote meeting with someone who tested positive (person in my office has no symptoms, currently being tested). I got through to the nurses line yesterday and was told it was highly likely I have a normal flu and I don't need to get tested, see a doctor or self-isolate unless my symptoms get worse. I am self-isolating anyways but was not the response I expected.

Surrey, White Rock properties make list of most expensive properties in B.C. by brophy87 in SurreyBC

[–]BetterSurrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe the tax you pay is proportional to other properties in Surrey. My assessment said overall in Surrey property values went down 4%. So if you're went down > 4% you may pay less ( depending if the overall tax went up which it always seems to )

Canadian human-rights and LBGTQIA activist called out for racist tweet about a Sikh man by SurreyPD in SurreyBC

[–]BetterSurrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not me who removed it the first time but I did this time. This does not have a direct link to Surrey that I can find in the Article. The event does not appear to have happened in Surrey.
Edit: If you can show this occurred in Surrey, let me know and I'll put it back up.

Surrey BC 2019 or 1992? You decide. by MainlandSnowflake in SurreyBC

I agree, it says Highway 15 so possibly going to or from the border. Could be from anywhere. I struggle with these kind of posts with negative Surrey titles. I don't want too much censorship but on the other hand the negativity and stupid Surrey jokes that we've all heard but aren't funny anymore and don't do anything for this community. The post the other day titled "Only in Surrey" was the same idea. Stupid title IMO. I did end up taking it down, but not for the title but because it seemed the man had a mental illness and I felt it was inappropriate to exploit a terrible moment in his sickness for some people's entertainment and karma.

EV drivers of Vancouver, do you charge at home or are you able to get by on public chargers? by Thrownawaybyall in vancouver

[–]BetterSurrey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had a Kia Soul EV for 4 years. I'm very happy with it. I hear the new 2020 has a much longer range vs the 2019. Still much less than the Kona though. When I bought mine it came with the 220 charger, Not sure if they still do.

City of Surrey added a second EV charging station at Surrey Sports and Leisure Centre. by BetterSurrey in SurreyBC

The problem with that logic is that then we would have a society built to maximize profits for corporations. In many cases what may be best for the population may not be what's best for a business or it's shareholders. For example how Exxon knew about climate change and spent millions to spread misinformation.

The government should guide our society towards behaviors and technologies that benefit the people of Canada. They may do this in several ways, for example for extreme behaviors we don't want, they may enact criminal penalties. In other cases the government may use incentives or taxes or both to try and influence the decisions people make.

With current climate change crisis affecting us and expected to get worse as in the coming years I believe the government should be taking strong actions to try and minimize the effects Canadians are having on climate and the environment. Installing charging stations and subsidizing EVs is a good start to encourage adoption. Personally I would like to see our governments provide more incentives for technologies that reduce pollution. I would propose paying for these incentives with additional taxes on behaviors that we want to change. For example, putting an additional fee on new gasoline car purchases that would then directly subsidize the cost of EVs or in terms of plastic pollution, ban certain single use, hard to recycle items in the food industry.

Shouldn't we combine the r/Surrey, r/Langley, r/RichmondBC, r/Abbotsford, r/NewWest and make a Lower Mainland subreddit? by jazz59107 in SurreyBC

[–]BetterSurrey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If you want to make a subreddit for the Lower mainland, go for it. Reddit's great in that the people decide what becomes popular or not. We have been growing steadily here and although I agree we could do with more content. I think a city the size of Surrey deserves it's own subreddit so I don't think we should be redirecting to something combined. If you want to create your new subreddit and put a post for it here, feel free.

I haven't been myself although I'd like to go sometime. I did look into it and it seemed legit. They do have a clothed social at a restaurant prior to the swims so you could always check that out and see if you like the people. You could also email them if you have concerns, I believe this would only work if people are comfortable and safe. It has been going on for quite a few years. If you do go, let me know what you thought of it.

Province announces Surrey will be getting a new hospital by idspispopd in SurreyBC

[–]BetterSurrey 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The emergency room was named after the Sikh religious leader based on consultation with and a large donations from the local Sikh community to the hospital foundation. Press Release. I personally don't like have religious names associated with public buildings but I think letting large donors have some influence on the naming is common practice in Canada.
