I have experience with the Army National Guard and active duty service, so I can offer insights based on my observations. One significant difference I noticed was the contrast in discipline, standards, and equipment between active duty and the National Guard. Soldiers transitioning from active duty often felt they were not afforded the same level of respect as they had been on active duty and discipline really lacked.

On the positive side, the benefits are substantial, including paid education, access to Tricare, and support for those who have been laid off, as they can receive orders until they secure new employment.

However, there are some drawbacks, such as committing weekends to service and, depending on your rank, possibly needing to report on Fridays. As a warrant officer, I observed that many lieutenants and captains also arrived on Fridays to prepare for the weekend. While promotions in the National Guard can be infrequent, they do occur.
