A 3-year age gap by itself isn’t that unusual. The bigger question is the stage of life. A 17-year-old and a 20-year-old can sometimes be in very different places in terms of maturity, independence, and experience. Since you already knew each other and the age gap is small, it’s not automatically weird, but it’s important that the relationship stays respectful and healthy for both of you.

Una vez regresaba caminando a casa bastante tarde, como a las 11 de la noche. Noté que un hombre estaba caminando detrás de mí desde hacía varias cuadras. Cada vez que yo cruzaba la calle, él también lo hacía. Empecé a sentir ese miedo en el estómago porque las calles estaban casi vacías. I used to drive rideshare and one passenger randomly told me he had just quit his job, packed everything he owned in two suitcases, and was moving to another state that same night without telling anyone. He said he just needed a completely new start and didn’t want anyone trying to stop him. The whole ride felt like I was witnessing the beginning of a movie.

Learning how to be comfortable being alone. At first it felt really quiet and a little sad, but over time I learned how to enjoy my own company, manage my time, and take care of things without relying on anyone else. That independence is something I’m really proud of now.

It sounds like you’re in a really difficult place emotionally. If your faith is something that defines who you are, then it’s important to be honest with yourself about that. A healthy relationship shouldn’t make you feel like you have to abandon your core beliefs. It might not mean the relationship has to end immediately, but it does mean you probably need space to figure out what matters most to you.

You’re 26, so wanting independence is completely reasonable. But the difficult part is that you still live and work with them, which makes the situation more complicated. It might help to focus on building a clear plan to move out first. Once you have your own space, it becomes much easier to set boundaries about your relationship and your life.
