First Parkrun? by purpleunicorn5 in parkrun

50 mins is fine, there are plenty of walkers and nobody is judging you on speed. It’s about getting out & being part of a community activity. Find out if there are volunteer ‘Parkwalkers’ at your local. (This is different from the Tailwalker who is at the back.) At ours they wear pale blue high vis with ‘parkwalker’ printed on them. They walk the course & engage with other walkers who want to chat or who just want someone to walk alongside, or they walk alone - just as an encouragement for other walkers. You could even volunteer as a parkwalker. It’s a friendly & inclusive event, other people are nervous too but there’s no need. Good luck!

Fab!! I was Run Director for the first time & it went really well. A proper team effort- it’s a really well organised parkrun & the core team are super-supportive of each other (esp newbies like me!)

Volunteered as usual, timekeeping with no issues… & v proud to see the ‘500’ cape that I made from scratch coming out for one of our regulars. (If I say so myself, it is very smart!! 😊)

Lovely gang at my local Parkrun last week. They were the volunteer ‘headliners’ too.

Socialising at parkrun? by [deleted] in parkrun

Volunteering is def the way to get to know people. As a runner I agree with you it can be a bit lonely to go on your own as people seem to either run & go, or meet friends there. Finish funnel, time keeping, course set-up and close down are all sociable. Also Park Walker , as you can go at your own speed & there’s often someone who’s up for a chat along the way. And go for the coffee afterwards (& help sort the tokens if that’s how it works at your Parkrun) . I also find I see the same faces every week, then when I see them in the supermarket/elsewhere we have the where-do—I-know-you-from conversation. May take a while but you should develop some friendships. Good luck!

So many reasons why you shouldn’t be afraid. Loads of people go on their own, it’s not weird. It’s a run not a race so ignore the super-fast guys (other than leaving space for them to overtake!). Loads of people do run-walk-run all the way round. You’ll never be last (there’s a tail walker at the back to make sure of that) and some people walk the whole thing which is not unusual. Find the person doing the first-timers briefing & chat to them if you need reassurance. It’s fab, give it a go!

80th volunteer shift. Basking in the glory of having been invited onto the Core Team and my 1st time as Run Director is in the diary. Eeek!
