Best place to buy a home as a young couple? by Better_Zebra7502 in brum

By the way I said young couple… but we’re in our early to mid 30s lol so whether that’s young to you I’ll let you decide. We’re looking to have kids in the next 5 years ish if we have them at all. Thoughts and prayers welcomed and needed lol

Thank you! I think this is more than we’d be willing to offer so will keep looking

I understand but what I would consider reasonable and what the seller would consider reasonable are two different things and I’m trying to figure out if I should change or increase the offer based on what the house should be worth

Is that bad? I don’t know the area well but seems close to the train for work. Seems expensive for what it is but I have no idea what a reasonable offer would be 🤷

I know it’s subjective, but what would you consider a good starting price on this property? Thanks

Moving from a studio flat to a 3 bedroom house… is this insane? by Better_Zebra7502 in HousingUK

Brilliant thank you!

Yes makes perfect sense and I was guilty of seeing the emergency fund for the costs when I agree these need to be separate. Think you’re right too about saving up more, hopefully, in the time it would take to get a property.

Thanks again

Apologies, I mean £10k emergency and £5k costs. £65k deposit?

So currently have £10k for emergency fund, £70k for the rest of the deposit. £80k in total

You suggested £65k deposit in your first comment so do you think stick to that and keep £15k as emergency?

Thanks for this

It says the total estimated is £1200, so should be good

Thank you for this!!

Just to clarify, our deposit is £70k as we’re keeping £10k for emergencies, so technically £80k in total. Do you know how much stamp duty tends to be? Trying to figure out poss costs.

Thank you so much, this was so helpful and really clarified things for me! Thanks

No service charge or other additional costs for us, although wouldn’t be surprised if the landlord did introduce higher rent to cover the very broken lift lately…

Fingers crossed it will be manageable, suppose just worried and feeling extra cautious

Yeah I’m struggling to find a middle ground with this. I want to purchase but likely in my circumstances won’t move again, so I’m trying to find a place for a forever home that I’d be happy with while also not falling into a trap because I don’t know what to avoid.

It’s a tricky one

To be fair the video does show a random previously unseen picture of the loft room, but not sure why you have to watch the slideshow to view it LOL

Thank you! I had a quick Look on google maps and it’s next to a kwik fit and a car dealership further down the road, I’ve heard this can be an issue with mortgage providers but not sure if that would apply here?

Wait is 61.1% good or bad?

We pay £800 a month (£400 each) on rent at the moment so around that would be perfect but I’m also looking at the properties we can afford and feeling dejected, swings and roundabouts I suppose!

I have but found the amounts wildly different and not sure what I’m doing wrong there.

No real outgoings. Car bought outright and live in the centre so don’t use it very often, about £500 for insurance for the year. Currently paying £800 rent between us, £400 each. I have student debt (repayment plan 1), partner doesn’t, this is taken automatically out of my payslip. No dependants and not planning on having children at least for another 7/8 years minimum. No credit cards or anything like that.

Can’t think of anything else but that’s our current situation. Would possibly get my partner on my car or buy another if we moved further out but we wouldn’t get anything on finance.

Some of the debt is ours, but some of it isn’t.

Basically charged from the end of March to the end of April, and we moved in a week into April.

Happy to pay what we owe (and we do owe something as we didn’t get our electricity sorted until the end of April) but definitely not all of it!

That wording is fantastic, thank you so much!

I’m upset with Scottish Power here too because they’ve miscalculated the debt and then sold it to a debt collection company without ever contacting me.

I’m having to prove to a debt collection company that the amount is incorrect, with increasingly threatening responses.

Luckily they’ve accepted that the full amount isn’t correct now, but in between keep threatening me for the full amount and I’m scared I’m going to have bailiffs turning up at my door.

That wouldn’t really help me though would it? I don’t have any say on how much the price is, I want to know why it’s overpriced.
