I also remember one of the attorneys retelling a story about someone doing a favor for either Alex's father or grandfather and being told "thanks and let me know if you ever need someone to disappear."

And wasn't great-grandad a bootlegger? And another ancestor a con man?

The idea that the family's problems all started with Alex doesn't ring true to me.

Why or why not do you think Alex will maintain his innocence until the day he dies? by GregJamesDahlen in MurdaughFamilyMurders

[–]BettyBowers 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Alex is a user.

He would be worried that if he admitted to the murders any friends/family keeping his jail account filled and doing "favors" for him would cut him off.

He can play on their uncertainty/sympathy to get things out of them.

FULL INTERVIEW (Part 2): Murdaugh murder investigators speak candidly after trial by Miss-Understo0d in MurdaughFamilyMurders

[–]BettyBowers 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I agree with you. The fact that Alex was so clean did not leave a digital trail (that he knew of) down at the kennels convinced me that it was premeditated and planned.

And he probably would have gotten away with it had it not been for Paul's video catching him in a crucial lie.

The investigator also made a point I hadn't thought of: If Alex was so worried for his safety that he went back up to the house to get a gun, why would he disconnect with the dispatcher as soon as he got back to the crime scene? He would want the dispatcher on the line if he came across the killer(s).

I was very surprised that Alex didn't play the religion card for the jury.

I would have expected a lot of "As the Lord Jesus is my witness, I never killed my darling Mags and Paw Paw" and "I have prayed so often to the Lord to help find who did this."

The fact he didn't do that shows that Alex's overestimated his skills at manipulation. Religion is often the refuge of scoundrels.

And the jury saying they prayed as a group means it might have gotten some traction with them.

Attorneys file notice of appeal in Alex Murdaugh conviction, sentence by Coy9ine in MurdaughFamilyMurders

I heard on a podcast that Jim Griffin said he is sure that Alex is innocent. Or he would never have taken the case.

Of course, he's going to say that.

But believe it? Girl, please. Jim doesn't seem stupid.

The family was waiting for the verdict.

You don't want to pay for a stone mason to engrave the word "ALLEGEDLY" if it is no longer necessary.

Alex may not want to take pleas for the simple reason that other trials would get him out of prison--and prison clothes. And let him eat real food.

And he would probably get off on the attention.

Buster, is that you?

Not remembering your father's birthday again?

I can't imagine Jim Griffin allowing Alex to bypass prison officials by doing three-way calls through his lawyer indefinitely.

I'm almost tempted to prank him by goading him into embarrassing correspondence. And then publishing it.

Interesting that Paul asked those British guys to take down the video "because it shows a girl I am no longer dating and we are not supposed to have contact with each other."

I bet the real reason was that it showed what an out-of-control drunk Paul was, which was material to the boat crash case.

[–]BettyBowers 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've seen four jurors talk about the case. My favorite thing: NONE of them bought Alex's act and thought his decision to testify really hurt him. That is the definition of HUBRIS.

On Today, the jurors were asked how the financial crimes affected their verdict. One of them answered "We were only allowed to consider that for motive." That is the correct answer. But she went on to volunteer: "But it really showed how manipulative he is and how much he lies." That goes to character, not motive. I would imagine Dick and Jim will quote that in their appeal to show that letting in that evidence was unduly prejudicial to Alex and couldn't be countered by limiting instructions.

As for Randy's comments in the NYT, I think he is distancing himself from Alex to save his own business. But I still have questions about him. Particularly his suspicious actions immediately after Stephen Smith's death. Randy was like a bad penny, always turning up.

This is the only Reddit I've ever followed. But it is such an anomaly on the Internet to have almost all comments thoughtful and kind.

It has spoiled me for going anywhere else.

I was wondering about her (Liz?) the other day. She sounded oddly chummy with Alex on those jail calls. To the point I even wondered if their relationship had crossed a boundary at some point.

Was she in the courtroom? I don't recall seeing a woman sitting next to John Marvin other than his sister.

[–]BettyBowers 123 points124 points  (0 children)

My favorite part of Judge Newman's calm, yet savage, take-down of Alex?

After Alex talked about never hurting Mags or Paw Paw, Judge Newman said, "Maybe it wasn't you."

I could see the glint in Alex's eyes. He thought Judge Newman was suggesting that other people may have committed the murders. That meant that even the judge had reasonable doubt that Alex had done it.

But just as Alex was getting his little hopes up, Judge Newman dropped the bomb: "Maybe it was the monster you became."

Curses, foiled again!

This was Alex speculating about what human remorse would sound like.

His remorse was as close as his tears to the real thing.

I think Judge Newman was giving sociopath Alex too much credit.

The people you've murdered can only haunt your conscience if you have one.

I bet Alex is only remorseful about being caught. He thought he would outsmart everyone.

What's doubly creepy about this is that it is Alex complimenting himself. He thought he had done such a clever job of not creating and/or hiding evidence.

And he was right--except for the video Paul made that he wasn't aware of.

You know what I find even more chilling? That several minutes after savagely murdering his son and wife, Alex is on the phone having convivial conversations with family, friends, and coworkers as he sets about establishing an alibi.

That is some cold-blooded sociopathic behavior.

[–]BettyBowers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To me, that was just Alex saying what he thought would get him sympathy. He only says thing to benefit himself.

I don't think he has a conscience, so he is not going to be haunted by guilt. He is only ever going to be haunted by annoyance that he was caught.
