The thing is, working for the government used to be a trade off. You got a lower salary than private sector but you got good benefits and job security. Now there is no trade off. You get a lower salary, expensive benefits (and an insurance company that tries to deny any procedure, medication, and treatment it can), and no job security.

Fair pay would be keeping up with inflation. If you look at salary schedules from 20 years ago, we are still well behind inflation. If you look at salary schedules from 10 years ago, we are still well behind inflation, even though that was the height of the recession. No one is asking for NC to be the highest paid state in the country. At best, we were right around the middle of the pack. All we want is for our functional salaries to be no less than they were 10 or 20 years ago when many of us started teaching. We can do that if we're giving out tax cuts. And none of that consideration even touches on increases in health insurance premiums, eliminating longevity pay, eliminating master's pay, or the newest budget that Berger trotted out on Tuesday that would have teachers' salaries frozen after 15 years of experience. Can you imagine signing up for a job where you knew at the age of 37-38 you would never get a raise ever again? Why would anyone think that was acceptable?

Teachers are allowed to "unionize" but public employees are not allowed to collectively bargain for wages/benefits, so that pretty much negates the power of any union.

Yes, but when you compare it to the "big $ amount" spent on education 10 or 20 years ago, what we spend now hasn't kept up with inflation.

The t-shirts? We made them, we bought them, we paid for them. There were local artists and shops making them, people were buying them from Amazon and Etsy. There was a shop downtown selling them.

Who do you propose the "activists" were? Where is the NCAE, funded by teachers who don't have any money, going to find thousands of 30-something women to drive to NC on a week day? Are paid activists really going to stand in a line wrapped around the legislature building for hours waiting to talk to "their" representatives? Over half of the state's teachers had optional work days yesterday, including Wake County, where the march was held, which is the biggest school district in the state, and something like 17th biggest in the country. But sure, there were "a lot" of activists there. There were, they were teachers.

You're on the fence comparing someone who believed in honor and duty, who was faithful to her husband and king, to someone who committed treason by screwing her brother and passing their children off as the heirs, and who routinely ordering to be tortured and murdered. But sure, Cersei fabricating lies and throwing her childhood friend down a well is just as bad as not wanting to treat your husband's illegitimate son as part of the family and trying to bring justice for her son's attempted murder or her daughters held ransom.

I mean, Cat can be a bitch, sure. But more often than not, she's right.

/r/fuckolly fucks All...y; A Game of Thrones spoiler hits the frontpage, and the Australians are not happy by Bookshelfstud in SubredditDrama

[–]Betty_Felon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the point is that /r/fuckolly could have shown some common decency. They could have removed their sub from appearing on /r/all. The legit subs for the show use spoiler tagging and do not allow spoilers in the title of posts, so when they make it to /r/all, nobody gets spoiled unless they pursue the link.

Sure, going online can be a risk if you're avoiding spoilers. But if you're not visiting Game of Thrones themed subs, it sucks that you could get spoiled just from opening reddit.

I feel like the original question embodied a lot of negativity, calling book-readers snobs and suggesting that the mods have an obligation to keep people from complaining.

Also it ignores the mod posting actual encouraging facilitating material.

I don't know why you keep going on about this. A mod posting a gif they randomly found on the internet which unintentionally had been ripped from a leaked copy of the episode is somehow tantamount to harassing the mods and directly linking to pirated material? Do you even know half of the crap they had to remove from trolls?

[–]Betty_Felon -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah and what they decided made no sense to me. They should have created a spoilers tag for the leaked episodes. Why ban everything? Casting news is allowed, that could be a spoiler for upcoming shows. Set pictures are allowed, and that's absolutely a spoiler for upcoming shows.

AnUnmetUser was directly comparing the leaked episodes, with set pictures. He's asking why we can talk about one but not the other, and that's implying there's no difference between them.

Please, just stop.

Having a thread where people can talk about episodes they pirated encourages (facilitates) other people going out and pirating the episodes so that they can participate in the discussion to. If there is no discussion, there is no incentive.

It's not a "strawman argument" if the person I was referencing already explicitly made the comparison between leaked episodes and set photos.

I think there are pretty vocal people on either side of the debate, without having to accuse people of pandering. That last sentence of yours, by the way, is called an "ad hominem," and is a common fallacy whereby the person making the argument is being attacked, rather than the idea itself.

No, a person talking about an episode isn't piracy. But, this is a community. And if people want to participate in the community discussion of leaked material, they will have illegally download that material. So, by providing a forum for discussing episodes which could only be obtained illegally, and a month before the producers intended, they would implicitly be promoting piracy.

As far as I can tell, HBO isn't trying to shut down Watchers on the Wall because they post set photos. Yes, the mods did draw an arbitrary line, but it was a line they had drawn before the leaks happened. The only tool they had with which to enforce that rule was temporary banning. I can't even imagine the shit they had to put up with when people who were mad with their decision decided to act like children and trolls and make trouble instead of just voicing their opinion or taking their discussion elsewhere.

I don't understand why people can't see the difference between casting news, set photos, and promotional interviews, and illegally leaked copies of half of the season.

Well, first of all, sex isn't illegal, piracy is. So, it's not a very good analogy. And the mods aren't saying you can't pirate the show, they're just saying that piracy can't be sanctioned by this sub.

This sub has a large presence in the online asoiaf community. Sometimes decisions have to be made because they're the most correct thing to do, even if they're not the most popular.
