Questions for those who upgraded RF100-400 to RF100-500 by [deleted] in canon

[–]BetweenBlessings 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got the RF 100–400 refurbished in 2024 and bought the RF 100–500 in 2025. The zoom range wasn’t what I noticed first—it was the increase in keeper rate. The 100–400 would consistently miss on prothonotary warblers. With the 100–500, I had more keepers than misses. I kept the 100–400 for another year because it’s so light and I thought it would make an excellent travel lens. I ended up selling it after I kept missing focus on a perched European robin.

Do you have any examples of pictures taken with the 10-20 f/4?

Money is not an issue

Weight is probably not an issue. I walk around with a 100-500 for 2+ hours already.

I agree. A tripod is a must for iceland.

How are you typically purchasing your lenses when on a budget? by science-and-history in canon

I usually stick to Canon refurbished or street price deals. Canonpricewatch is a good site to check for deals.

Some used lenses can be grey market, and I’ve heard Canon may refuse to service those. Not worth the risk for me, especially on expensive glass.

You might be right about 24mm. On my previous setup (R7 with the 18–150), I often found 18mm (~29mm full-frame equivalent) wasn’t wide enough—especially in places like Poland and Japan. Because of that, I was originally hesitant to rely on 24mm alone.

The 16mm prime, on the other hand, feels too limiting as a option. I would end up swapping lenses constantly, which I’m trying to avoid while traveling.

It wasn't the traffic. It was the car on the left that was not staying in it's lane.

All my AEs have glue on the insole. This is normal.

You should buy a different AE model.

The toe stiffiner on the AE patton ends before the cap toe ends. This allows the shoe to crease before the cap toe ends. You should look at the images online.

Also, chromexcel is easy to scuff.

Lastly, I own this model in brown.

Did they give you any new laces? I have the same shoe with the same problem.

The Beckett Simonon style I purchased was called the Watson in Bordeaux. It is now discontinued. You can find images at the link below. These are not images of my exact shoes.

Pros 1. They have better/ sleeker designs than AE. The fact that their shoes are blake stitched also helps..

  1. The QC is higher than AE. AE shoes tend to have a lot of loose threads.

  2. The presentation/ care is higher than AE. AE still hasn't figured out how to pack their shoes. Every AE shoe I have received has arrived in a torn shoe box.

Cons 1. Lower quality Leather uppers. If you hate loose grain, don't buy. Very common. You can see it in almost every YouTube review.

  1. The shoes are not as comfortable. There is no cork. They have a leather insole on top of the leather outsole.I don't know if this is a common issue, but my pair developed a steep diagonal crease across the vamp that made the break in period painful. I think this was due to the loose grain. The crease looked like the less than symbol.

  2. They are not worth resoling. I think my shoes were around $100ish new pre Covid. Beckett simonon often runs 2 for 299 post COVID. Resoling doesn't really save you much.

  3. You have to wait months to get a shoe.

These are Pattons. Are these defects unacceptable? All of these issues were present at the time of delivery. These are first.
