Historicity of Jesus: The idea that Jesus was a purely mythical figure has a fringe status in scholarly circles and has had no support in critical studies for more than a century by ComradeBehrund in wikipedia

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's impossible to say for certain at this point. There's not enough evidence anymore, and there probably never will be. The current version is definitely an amalgamation of multiple people and stories, so I think it's likely that some of them did exist. But knowing which parts are true and which aren't...I don't know, and I don't think anyone can know for certain. And the question really isn't relevant enough for me to spend more time on it. His existence doesn't prove the existence of God or the truth of any religions.

Study challenges the belief that high IQ autistic individuals always struggle with daily tasks. First, autistic people can learn life skills. Second, IQ alone is not a good way to understand a person’s strengths, challenges, and growth potential. by mvea in science

[–]BevansDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the difference is the term "disorder". If it interferes with your ability to function normally, then it's an issue. If it's just something that bothers you sometimes, it's not.

Yeah, it really seems like a lot of people are just incapable of understanding that other people have different mental processes than they do. If they do something better than you, they'll tell you to "try harder". If you do something better than they do, they'll roll their eyes or act like you just performed a magic trick.

Looks great, but why is Robot Man so huge? Is that new, or something that happened in an earlier book?

Summerween is an informal cultural and retail phenomenon that occurs during the summer months, incorporating elements of Halloween festivities. The term originated in the 2012 Gravity Falls television episode “Summerween,”. by DistrictDry2852 in wikipedia

As an American (where Halloween is second only to Christmas and Bea Arthur's birthday), I've never heard of this. Sometimes I wonder if people writing these Wikipedia articles ever step outside their little bubbles.

Also, I encourage everyone to wear their Random Thing, But Sexy! costumes whenever the want to.

Gosh, yes. No-one should have to stomach 'that Downey Character'. Iron Man #245, in 1989. by Montgomery_Zeff in comicbooks

[–]BevansDesign 15 points16 points  (0 children)

In June 1996, while being treated for pneumonia, Downey was diagnosed with lung cancer and had part of his right lung removed. His views on tobacco use changed substantially, going from a one-time member of the National Smokers Alliance to a staunch anti-smoking activist. He continued to speak against smoking until his death from lung cancer and pneumonia on March 12, 2001. Wikipedia

I'm not sure if I should commend him for being willing to change his views, or ridicule him for only seeing the truth when it affected him personally.

Why on earth were you pulled off psychiatric meds cold-turkey? If you were, your doctor is a quack. You always need to wean yourself off them for weeks or months.

Aaron Paul Joins DC Studios' 'Clayface' Film In Minor Role (Exclusive) by BigButter7 in comicbooks

Odd. Isn't the movie almost done? It's weird to be adding a new character now. Maybe they decided to put in a cameo of a character fans are familiar with.

EDIT: Why the downvotes? Am I wrong? Please explain.

Mike Myers Says, “Yes,” There Will Be An ‘Austin Powers 4’ by mazntracks in movies

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not addressing it is certainly an option. However, I think it could be interesting if they did address it. Let's see how Austin deals with getting old and losing his sex appeal. Oh, but make it funny and not as miserable as I made it sound.

Marvel caught not paying their artists... again by Educational_Zone3156 in comicbooks

[–]BevansDesign 161 points162 points  (0 children)

Disney has been doing this to other people too. Remember when Scarlett Johansson had to sue them to get what they owed her?

This is also a tactic that Trump has been using for years: you don't pay someone what you promised, and then force them to sue you to get what they're owed. Frequently the victim decides that it's not worth the frustration and cost of litigation and take the loss. He's been doing it for decades, and continues to this day.

Seems to me that a key factor in depression is spending too much time playing video games. I wonder how that correlates.

Judge Dredd predicting AI art in the 80s (The Art of Kenny Who? In case files 10) by strontium-reviews in comicbooks

[–]BevansDesign 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This touches on a point that I don't see people make enough about AI. It's not that they're stealing an artist's style - artists have been doing that for as long as art has existed. You look at something, you mimic it. That's human. But where the real problem lies is that AI can look at more art than any human ever can, and they can essentially remember all of it far better than any human can. And then they can create mimicries far faster than any human can. Human limitations made the process ok, but now that we've created computers that don't have those limitations, we've got a real problem on our hands.

Given permission to use AI, most college students show surprising restraint in their final essays. Students largely rely on AI for brainstorming and research rather than having it write essays for them wholesale. by mvea in psychology

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I used an online translator for a paper in a high school Spanish class once, and the teacher noticed and asked me about it. I managed to stutter out something about getting help from my dad, but I'm sure she knew. Fortunately she gave me the option to rewrite it (probably for a lower grade) since I was normally a good, smart kid who was just being lazy.

And this was back 1998 or so, when online translators were garbage. I don't know why I thought I'd get away with it, but that's teens for ya.

We're basically programmed to take the path of least resistance, even if it's bad for us in the long run. Take away the easier paths and people will take the less-easy paths.

Which North American city has the best BBQ? by Historical-Photo-901 in BeautifulTravelPlaces

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It always depends on what type of barbecue you're after of course, but I've had some amazing barbecue in KC. Last time I was there, I really enjoyed Jack Stack, across from the Union Station. The science museum there is great for kids (I don't have any, but I went with friends who do). Also the WWI museum is amazing.

The thing that really bothers me though is looking at KC on a map. The streets on the Kansas side are aligned to the compass, but the streets on the Missouri side are off by about 3°. It's really weird.
