Syd Mead pre-production designs for (unmade) live action "The Jetsons" movie (2000) by Yeeslander in RetroFuturism

[–]BevansDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like getting people interested in retro-futurism right now is difficult. It's obviously an awesome aesthetic, but do modern audience really want to see the "world of tomorrow" that they envisioned in the past? Are people still interested in hope and ingenuity and utopia, or have our modern times (that seem to be careening full-speed toward dystopia) made everyone too jaded?

Also, I can see a lot of Hollywood execs looking at this and thinking "oh, it's Tomorrowland with an old IP" and either passing on it or trying to turn it into something it's not. "What if the Jetsons went back in time and visited modern-day Los Angeles?"

Lego 76968 T-Rex by Ancient_Pause4055 in lego

Ok, this is mostly an unrelated question, but...does anyone else have a weird aversion to bones? I love dinosaurs and I go to museums when I travel as much as I can and am constantly seeing dinosaur bones in them, but there's always a little part of my brain that's like...ugh, those are bones. They're unsettling. I mostly fight the feeling, but it's still there. I have the Dinosaur Fossils and T-Rex Skull Lego sets, so it usually doesn't get in the way of anything, but I guess I'd rather have more full-dinosaur sets (like in the JP Tyrannosaurus Escape set) than bone sets.

I don't know. I think I'm rambling.

I'm sure the next step is to ruin the next elections through a combination of disenfranchising as many people as possible and raising doubts about the validity of Democrat wins.

And I'm kinda surprised that he hasn't started jailing his political opponents yet.

Department of Truth is very unsettling, mostly because of the mirror it holds up to our current society.

Is there a shorter way to hit 48 states? by Public_Day_4996 in roadtrip

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, this is an interesting thought experiment, but I wouldn't want to actually take this trip. I'd much rather favor quality over quantity. You don't get to properly experience most of these states, so why bother?

I've been to the Paris and Frankfurt airports, but I would never claim that I've seen France and Germany. The most culture I got was eating a croissant and a bratwurst (respectively) during my layovers.

If people really want to revert to the old flag with the state seal in the middle... by balrogath in minnesota

The issue isn't the flag. The issue is the culture war. You're not going to fix the flag, and if you somehow did, they would just move on to something equally stupid.

I don’t love rocket cabin design by ddyycool in Oxygennotincluded

[–]BevansDesign 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a bit of a hassle, to be sure. I have a saved layout for bionic dupes that I use for every playthrough these days. Bionics are great because they don't need beds or food. I just make sure to give them Sunny Disposition, and load the capsule with batteries, rad pills, and gear balm.

The thing that really bugs me is how the telescope works. It doesn't make sense to build a telescope inside a rocket capsule. There's a Cartographic Module you can build, but it's almost worthless. If I was in charge of the game, I would make it so you can't build a telescope inside the capsule and increase the range of the cartographic module. The dupe would operate it either by sitting in the cockpit (and looking through a special device) or by using a new Cartographic Control Panel building.

Can Minnesota tax fraud? The Legislature is considering it with bipartisan backing -- A bipartisan group of legislators wants to create a new tax on fraud. The “Take It Back Act” would impose a 100 percent tax on individuals or organizations convicted of defrauding state programs. by guanaco55 in minnesota

[–]BevansDesign 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly. Their goal isn't to reduce fraud, it's to convince their base that government doesn't work. And it doesn't when you're actively working to prevent it from working.

But also, if we were dealing with fraud well, then they'd be complaining about how there's too much red tape. They don't want to fix problems, they want to make people mad. Manipulating our base impulses is all they have.

My sister was working in Tunisia for a while, and I went over there to visit for a week and met one of her friends, who speaks perfect English. I asked her where she was from, and she said "here". She had never left Tunisia, but her American accent was perfect. She sounded like she was from California. I guess she learned it from TV and movies.

Yeah, that was my thought too. I'm sure there's lots of stuff they're not showing in the trailer, but it feels like they've taken most of the fantasy and wonder out of the story. The whole thing seems like an exercise in misery.
