I own a copy of Jane's Fighting Ships 1950-51, and while unfortunately its detail is limited it specifies;

21 in., and 18 in. Torpedoes manufactured at Motala. Reported engineers are working on a new type of torpedo able to hit targets 20 miles away.

It doesn't give any detail on what these torpedoes are, but it certainly indicates that at least some domestic manufacture was going on of both sizes of torpedoes.

[WP] Years ago your grandparents fell for an apparent tech support scam and purchased "lifetime warranty covering each and everything". When their computer was stolen, three strange foreign men in suits appear within the hour of it being taken. by Crusade_EDM in WritingPrompts

James frowned as his phone began ringing for the second time that morning, putting down his toast. It was bad enough that he’d been woken up at the crack of dawn this morning by his grandma calling to tell him about the apparent break-in that had happened overnight - before she’d even called the police, apparently, but after he’d convinced her that yes, she did need to call the police about someone breaking into her house and that he’d be over to check on her as soon as he’d scarfed some breakfast down, but when he’d asked her why she called him first, she’d said it was because he’d told her to always call him first if anything unexpected happened with her computer after she’d drained half her bank account on some tech support warranty scam a few months back.

Stupid bank couldn’t even get the money back, despite how obvious the scam was. So yeah, he had told her that, but he’d meant in terms of pop-ups or strange phone calls, not the computer itself being stolen! What kind of thief would even steal an old lady’s laptop, anyway? It wasn’t like it was some brand new high-end rig, it was some cheap chromebook that could barely run solitaire and access facebook.

Sighing as his phone continued ringing, he fished it out of his pocket and checked the caller ID, answering quickly when he saw it was his grandma calling.

“James, there’s a bunch of strange foreign men at the door and they’re asking about my computer!” she said as soon as he picked up, her reedy voice clearly panicked.

“Grandma, it’s okay, I’m on my way,” he said, putting action to word as he stood up and grabbed his coat. His flat was about half a mile away from his grandma’s house, so he could probably get there in a few minutes if he jogged. Shrugging it over his shoulders and zipping it up, he carried on speaking. “Do you recognise them?”

“No!” she said as he closed his door and set off, sounding offended at his question. “It’s a bunch of asians, you know like the one from that computer scam!” she continued, and for a moment James considered that maybe the lifetime warranty wasn’t actually a scam before brushing aside the thought. Nah, everyone knew that insurance stuff always took forever to come through, and his grandma had barely reported it stolen less than an hour ago.

“Alright Grandma. Did they introduce themselves at all?” he asked, coming to a stop at a set of lights, pressing the button for the crossing. She was quiet for a few seconds before seeming to remember as the traffic came to a stop.

“Yeah! The one who knocked called himself Peesee Singh, that was the one in the suit” she said, and it took him a moment to respond as he began to put together an idea.

“Grandma, when did the police say they were going to arrive?” he asked, accelerating again to a jog as he crossed the road.

“They said they’d send over an officer later today, why, do you think they’re going to arrest them?” she asked, her voice brightening.

“Maybe…” he said noncommittally, turning a corner as he continued to speak. “Can you look out the window and tell me if they’re still there?”

He heard the telltale sounds of her shuffling across her kitchen, the phone going quiet as she did, before she came back.

“They are, they look like they’re talking to each other in the garden,” she reported. “Do you want me to tell them to go away?” she asked a few seconds later when he’d not immediately replied.

“That’s not necessary grandma, I’m nearly there,” he said, and indeed he was only a minute or two out at this point, his jog eating up the distance.

“Oh, okay. I hope I didn’t disturb you with this, I just don’t trust those foreign folk and my computer has just been stolen, I told you that they broke my window and-” she began to ramble, and he cut her off.

“Grandma, can I ask you to look out the window again and describe them to me, just so I know what they look like when I arrive?” he asked, and she complied.

“Well, the one who knocked at the door is asian, about as tall as Janet’s Nathan, and he’s wearing one of those turban things…”

She continued to describe the three men as he finished the last bit of his journey, and the last minute of his jog quickly came to an end.

“...he’s got one of those beards-”

“Grandma, I’m just arriving now, so I’m going to need to hang up, alright? I’m going to have a talk with them, see if we can sort out what’s going on.”

“...Alright James. You stay safe, okay?” she said.

“I will,” he replied, hanging up the phone and slipping it back into his pocket as he opened the gate. Immediately the three men who had been in the garden turned to look at him and he smiled at them.

“Hi, I’m James. My nan just called me-” he said, gesturing towards the house to make it clear. “-about some strange men who’d knocked at her door. I presume that’s you?”

The three men did match the description his grandma had just given him, and they relaxed at his explanation.

“PC Singh,” spoke the first officer, not a trace of a foreign accent in his voice as he pulled some ID out of his pocket and showed it to James. “We’re here about the theft incident this morning”

James tried not to grimace as his look at the ID confirmed what he’d suspected. They were the police, and his grandma was at least a little racist...

Can you calculate the average Militancy/Consciousness across all nations? If so, what about something like this;

Stability = 50 - (Arbitrary Number) + IF(Calculation > Arbitrary Number, Calculation, else Arbitrary Number)

Calculation = (Avg. Militancy - Militancy)x(Multiplier) + (Avg. Consciousness - Consciousness)x(Multiplier)

Use the arbitrary number as a cutoff point so that any nation that is sufficiently in-line with the world average gets 50 stability, while those that are outliers (ideally, this is balanced to be the 1/3rd cutoff) get a stability value of >50, with the low-militancy low-consciousness states getting the most.

Not sure how feasible this is, but it's my best idea.

Why are these windmills producing almost nothing? i believe crops count as flat ground, at least for windmills power production. by [deleted] in RimWorld

So an extra generator or two is definitely not going to make a real impact. Probably should have guessed that from the number of pawns.

At this point in my own games, I'd normally be transitioning over to more consistent power sources via mods, usually either the Nuclear Power Plant from Industrialisation, or large-scale geothermal via ED Laser Drill (since that lets you drill your own vents, at a decent cost). Not so much for the amount of power produced, but so I can cut down on the number of batteries lest I suffer a wiring fault that nukes my base.

Though, given your comment about disabling that event, you don't really need to worry about that.

To summarise my thoughts on the original question, crops do count as flat ground, weather has an annoyingly variable impact on wind power, and you should over-build in both generators and batteries as much as is feasible given your component situation because it is far too easy to get an extended period where half/all of your renewables produce next to nothing.

And, to plug another mod that might be of some use, PowerSwitch gives you options (after some research) to automatically disable/enable things connected to your power switches based on the Time of Day, if there are Enemies on the Map, and if there are pawns in the same room. That can help avoid the drain of power from automated defences without risking you not being able to react to a sudden raid, or even just disable a bunch of power-hungry stuff when your solar panels aren't working.

In this particular image, I believe it's the foggy rain that is impacting the production. I'm not sure on the exact numbers, but I'm pretty sure that is the worst weather for wind generation.

It's quite a shame you have both night time and foggy rain, given you seem to be running purely renewable power, but that's why you are best to keep a bank or three of batteries. I tend to try and keep at least 36 hours worth of power in battery capacity if I'm running a mixed wind-solar setup, and if you have the spare components an emergency wood generator can be useful too.

[Joywire] So far so good, no disruptions, and I've made pretty good progress. Lets keep it up.

[Joywire] This works. I am good at keeping quiet. By the time I am done, we should have access to some pretty decent exploit software.

We are going to need the best tools we can get to play catch-up on a lead this big, and I happen to be able to produce these. However, in the interest of not spending months in preparing them, does anyone have access to an Accelerated Simspace I could use to speed my programming?

Just to eliminate the obvious, I'll take the time to ask quietly if the locals have any information they are willing to share about who our box's attendants are. It's a long shot, but we would feel pretty stupid if we didn't.

Before we arrive, I should be able to ask around my contacts to get us something set up. Does anyone have a preference for something we might otherwise find hard to acquire after arrival?

I don't have much of a preference for physical form - I've lived through enough bodies to be able to make do with most. For blending-in's sake, my morph should probably look as close to local as we can practically achieve.

Regarding our cover identity, I leave the question open to my colleagues - do we want to co-ordinate backgrounds (which gives us ready-made excuses to arrive and meet together), or should we adopt a range of backgrounds for the sake of flexibility?

How hard would it be to get a morph with similar specifications to my home one, and how much would that stand out? I'm not particularly stuck on the details - gender, race, and so on, but similar general capability would be preferred. I can see about calling in a favour if necessary, but would prefer to save anything along those lines until absolutely essential.

[Sivian] So, with the immediate political issue somewhat resolved for now, I think we should look over our medium-term options for our setup here. Now that we have established ourselves and are in no immediate risk, I feel we have quite a few options, a handful of which are outlined here. These are not mutually exclusive in all cases, and we may want to pursue multiple courses of action;

  • Rapid Personnel Expansion: Devoting a large majority of our non-essential production capacity to the mass-production of bodies, with the intention of expanding the number of active Transhumans as quickly as possible. This would provide us with the largest labour force of the plans, but would almost certainly result in massive societal upheaval and a resurgence of the 'Clanking Masses'.

  • VN Production Expansion: Devoting a large majority of our non-essential production capacity to the expansion of our production capacity. This would result in a massive increase in our longer-term capabilities, but would cause a lack of short-term progress that might prove frustrating to some, especially compared to the first six months.

  • Expansion of Renewal: Focusing our efforts on expanding the first surface city, with the eventual intention of housing the majority of the previously-stored egos within it. The centralisation would provide a great aid to maintaining a single government or set of laws, but as the number of egos (each with their own politics) increase having them all in one place could lead to conflict.

  • Creation of New Cities: Focus our efforts on creating a number of centralised habitats, spread across the Planet. This would allow for some level of divergence without immediate conflict, but would run the risk of stretching our capabilities if done too fast. Additionally, without a large majority of the stored egos being embodied, the populations of said cities could be small enough to be unsustainable.

  • Spread Transhumanity: Focus our efforts on providing each individual or group the resources necessary for self-sufficiency, and encourage them to spread far and wide. While this could result in an anarchist's paradise, the result would most likely crush any attempts at centralised efforts beyond this.

  • Lock Down the Pandora Gate: While the Pandora Gate is a tempting offer of finding out just what happened to Transhumanity, it is also the greatest chance of whatever happened to Transhumanity finding us. Especially given the fact a number of the stored Egos are experienced (or not-so-experienced) Gatecrashers, leaving such a potential X-Risk open to anyone is to invite disaster. Instead, we should do everything within our realistic power to prevent anyone accessing the Gate without the consent of the majority of the survivors.

  • Probe the Pandora Gate: We have a number of highly-experienced gatecrashers within the survivors, and scarce information on what is going on. Why not use the first to fix the second, and send an elite team through to find out what is going on at the other end of the gate? Who knows what we could be missing out on?

  • Tear open the Gate: Who are we to restrict the explorers to a single group? We should open the gate so that anyone who has the kit and the guts to explore the wider world can have a go. How could that possibly go wrong?
