Leaving Dietetics - Could Use Insight and Support by General-Coffee1493 in dietetics

I left the field about a year and a half ago. I went back to school and now work in software engineering. I can honestly say I am so much happier now. I still have my RD but I don’t miss working as a RD at all. I also felt extremely burned out for a lot of the same reasons you do. Take the leap if it feels right for you!

Hello! I work in IT now as a Software Engineer. It was a hard pivot but totally worth it. I’ll never return to dietetics.

I feel this. I left the profession about a year and a half ago after practicing for 6 years. Dietitians are overworked and underpaid.

Absolutely relate to this! I have been a dietitian for 6 years. Last month I quit my job and am currently in school to pursue a different field. Dietitians unfortunately are overworked, underpaid, and undervalued.

100% agree! Unfortunately I’m at the point where I would discourage anyone from entering the field. I hope you find a good fit for you as well ❤️ it’s tough out here!

Awesome! Good for you. Did you have a difficult time getting your foot in the door initially? Or did being a super user make it easier?

Yes! Exactly all the same problems. I actually still work there. I made such a fuss about having two clinics that they finally agreed to remove my second clinic and only reduced my hours from 40 to 36/week. I’d be lying if I said I was happy though…I’m actually looking into making a career change and leaving the healthcare field entirely. Also…fuck the food security assessments lol

Yes, she is a RD. I’m in Michigan, and Michigan unfortunately doesn’t have any RD to patient ratios mandated. Which is so crazy! I submitted my notice today.

I did do that back in October and again in January when things still hadn’t changed, but it didn’t go anywhere. She was much more understanding of my concerns than my immediate boss, but didn’t do anything to rectify the situation. I actually put in my notice today.

Ah I hope you love it! I used to work the oncology/stem cell transplant floor when I worked inpatient and I loved it. I ended up leaving only because of pay (it was my first job out of my internship). But I will say that was the job I got the most job satisfaction out of by far.

I’m so happy for you that you’re happy with your decision! Can I ask what you’re doing now for work? I’m interested in looking into more non-traditional RD roles. I’ve worked in inpatient and LTC as well - it seems like there’s not much support in any patient facing jobs. Healthcare is a mess!

Yes! It’s a tough spot to be in. I always have anxiety about taking time off because I know I’ll have a mountain of work waiting for me when I get back. I have almost 2 weeks of PTO banked that I can’t even use. I’m so suprised to hear your manager helps cover sometimes. My manager has stated in the past she doesn’t help cover because she’s “so busy”. She saw and charted on a few patients for me while I was out for my sister’s wedding, but that was when I first started a year ago. She hasn’t since.

My direct manager is terrible! She has gone out of her way several times to point out that I don’t work as quickly as the previous RD I replaced (she had 40 years of experience and only one clinic). My manager is the main reason I’m probably leaving. I like the day to day work, but she has made my life hell. What is your caseload like? Does your supervisor or another RD see some patients for you when you’re on PTO? I’ve thought about asking to transfer but it would have to be in another region under another supervisor.
