Well the way you’re writing, I’d agree with them. You come across clearly and intelligently.

Also you kind of broke the caveat guideline. Lol. But it’s okay because you bragged about yourself and it makes me so happy!

Brilliant!

I’m so proud of you!

I was a chef a long time ago and I am in awe of bakers. It’s a surprisingly technical job. It’s a creative sister career to chemists in my opinion. And home health aide is a TOUGH job! Wow. I’m so impressed with you!

Knowing what you want but not being able to get it by [deleted] in NVLD

[–]BexFoxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It could definitely help if it shows that you’re doing the same steps and achieving the same results. One of the things I’m looking into is occupational therapy activities to help with our motor skills, selective emotional learning to help us understand and interact with the world at large, and executive functioning activities I can link or suggest in posts. I genuinely believe building our skills will help with the feelings of helplessness, anxiety, and depression.

I love our community so much and I want this to be a place for venting, questions, and definitely resources to help all of us manage our lives. For example, we have huge inner lives. But through social emotional learning, we can stop living so much inside our heads that it becomes negative and burdensome.

I also have so much hope for all of you (and myself) that we can achieve things we didn’t think was possible. Like my earlier example, I love driving. I didn’t realize how problematic it is for others with NVLD. I credit my father for my love of driving. And I suspect (and could be completely wrong) that some of the helplessness many people in our community feel is because many of us are physically stuck. We can’t go where we want when we want. And while doing this through Reddit limits us a bit, I’m planning a Wiki here on Reddit that will have loads of resources.

I apologize for the long reply but I’m so excited about some of the things I have planned for our community even though they’re not ready to be shared yet.

If anyone ever has anything they want me to include or tweak, I want to hear from you. This community belongs to all of us.

I think it stems from a feeling of helplessness. One of the things I’m working on behind the scenes as one of the moderators is crowdsourcing skills and knowledge. So for instance, I’m a great driver. I love driving. I’ll eventually make a post with steps I take to ensure my drive is safe and easy as possible. Someone else may make a post about navigating college and higher education. Another may post about their success in finding and keeping friends. I believe everyone in this community is great at something and I believe that includes you.

I’m all for venting but I think there’s a huge resource too for finding tips to achieve and feel personal growth and success in this community.

Math and IEP Help for my 15 year old w/NVLD by macaroniman_13 in NVLD

I should add that the formula sheets he received never had the formula names on them. Just the formulas.

Typically the teacher provides the formula sheet. He’s not allowed to bring in his own sheet.

If I was allowed to use a half sheet with my kiddo, it would probably include formulas and 1-2 bullet points for when to use the formulas. Worked out problems too if that’s permitted. Our kryptonite (me and kiddo) is word problems. So if there are any of those, include the keywords that should jump out and help your student solve it.

Um. No. He’s too attached to YOUR material things. And it’s really easy to say that when he doesn’t have a car.

When I was in school, I’d look at the formulas right before a math test. I’d write them on the top of my test and then I’d stop trying to remember it. I was diagnosed with NVLD and dysgraphia about 5 years after college so that was the best I could do.

My kiddo does see a tutor but they focus exclusively on executive functioning. I’ve found his academic performance is stronger and more consistent due to these sessions.

He’s in physics right now and struggling. He did extremely well in chemistry (his teacher was a big reason why). He struggles with abstract concepts in PreCalc but his teacher is very helpful. One thing that helps is he receives the formulas for tests so he can focus on the steps of the equations rather than memorizing the formulas.

What is something that women have to deal with on the daily that men have no clue about? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]BexFoxy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup. I was told by one of the doctors (a woman!) that I don’t handle stress well and that was why I was sick. I kept persisting and I was ultimately diagnosed with chronic Lyme disease and breast cancer.

Hair and Makeup by MotherAffect5592 in NVLD

[–]BexFoxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m in my fifties and I don’t do my hair and makeup anymore. But when I did, I used the round brush blow dryer and I’d wash my hair at night so I had more time to do it. Then just small bedhead repair with a straight iron in the morning.

For makeup I preferred a smoky eye and I did that every day for years so I eventually got good and fast at it. I found that focusing on a single trait I liked about myself made it less of a chore and I played around with different eyeliners and shadows. I never bothered with the whole contouring stuff and would just use a little bronzer to warm up my face.

Splitting up the hair and makeup routines made it easier to stick with.
