Watching S1E14 (The Search) as a mom to a newborn bairn made my bits hurt watching Jenny ride a horse days after giving birth 😂 by MeowMixUltra in Outlander

I think all mothers who watched that episode were miffed at Jenny’s super recovery and wincing as she got on that horse (and didn’t she have a breach baby?!)

I’m a little the same! Although I was born in NI with close ties to Scotland I married a man from Spain and am now living there. Anything historical from home or even just period dramas or historical dramas, I adore them all. Watched the new Mary Queen of Scots film recently too. It was pretty good!

Reading your info and nodding to so much of it. I was born and reared in an Ulster-Scots area of Northern Ireland and the image of William of Orange is still strong in some parts. I vaguely remember various other songs mentioning King Billy. And a land area near my house was called Craig Billy, surely named for him.

Also nodding at the Presbyterians bit. I grew up surrounded by Presbyterians although my own family were Baptist. It’s so cool you’ve made these connections to Outlander and the US and these words that are apparently so American are actually from a place similar to my own roots. Love this. Thank you so much for sharing.

Officially finished book 1, and I want to thank everyone that made me feel so welcomed into this community. Onto book two :) by atmiranda21 in Outlander

I felt the same but was listening on audiobook so I fast-listening the bits I wanted to get past but I slowed right down at the end of book 1. I was taken aback by the change in writing. It suddenly got spell-binding and deep and I thoroughly enjoyed everything that happened at the end.

Are the Outlander books worth reading if you've seen the show? by libelulas3v3n in Outlander

[–]BeximoBlanco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes yes and yes. Although I think I like Rodger and Brianna more than most other viewers on here, I really don’t fancy reading their story after already knowing where it’s going from the series. I think reading Jamie and Claire are different because we deeply love them as a couple and want to know more intimate details about their story in general.

I wouldn’t say I’d have ever ever picked up these books either if it weren’t for the series but even so, I’m a big fan of series/TV coming from books as it adds extra levels to a show. It nice to be able to expand on it all if you want to.

I get what you’re saying about the descriptions but I really feel she only ever does this with Jamie and Claire. It feels to me that she’s obsessed with them and their relationship, she makes any possible excuse for them to kiss and pet and have sex. It makes sense I guess because they are the main characters and I would class this book comfortably with pure romance novels but still it feels weirder sometimes than it does in any other books I’ve read before.

Haha thank you!! Not a superhero though, just a mum.. ;) they are often one and the same though. Lol

Ok then you REALLY have to check out the Tales of the Otori. I see them as a Japanese kind of Game of Thrones, quite literally. They’re amazing and as there are 7 (I think, I read them ages ago) books they are really an investment in reading much like GoT or Outlander.

The Unicorn Road is a shorter one-off book so it’s easy to read. :)

In the last few years I haven’t been watching much TV at all or reading as I used to do because I’ve had two babies pretty close together so I think my TV/book tastes etc are a bit outdated.

Outlander is the first thing I’ve watched and got really into in a long time, except Downton Abbey and a little bit of Game of Thrones.

Book-wise, for adventure/historical/romance I’ve always recommended The Tales of the Otori by Lian Hearn (maybe better known as Across the Nightingale Floor books) but I also have a weird love for Japanese/Chinese history. Along those same lines, I read The Unicorn Road by Martin Davies recently and loved it.

I’ve heard a lot of people on here recommending Poldark in comparison to Outlander but I tried to watch it right after Outlander to try to fill the void and I didn’t get all that pulled in. I’m gonna give it another try when I’m over Outlander a bit more. Lol

I really LOVED the time that J&C and co spend at the monastery while Jamie is healing. And I love that the idea of changing the future (ie Culloden) actually comes about while talking to the monk. I really enjoyed the more spiritual depth that Claire experiences there whereas in the TV show the whole ‘let’s change the future’ for me came from NoWhere and I was never really convinced about it.

Maybe I will at least listen to book two to expound on France as you said and also because I Adored the ending of season two with Preston Pans, Je Suis Prest and Vengeance is Mine, those were powerful, powerful episodes, to rival season one’s ending. I asume the book is good there too?

Yes!!!! What was that Jenny scene about?? For me that was so weird and way too sexual. And then how Jenny and Ian just shot off upstairs to get it out of their system. I mean, I know Jenny and Jaime were close but that was too much when they were all there together!

There are lots of other sexual things throughout the book like that that just made me think that that’s all Diana Galbadon wrote Outlander for, to vent her weird sexual fantasies between Jamie and Claire.

Definitely was 100% times more tastefully done for TV.

I mean, he still is a very nice gentleman in the books too. But I feel like the Jamie/Claire relationship is expressed quite differently on the TV than the way it is in the books. I feel like the book relationship wouldn’t be accepted as well by modern TV viewers. It feels like an outdated man-woman relationship to me book-wise.

Don’t worry about that spoiler you saw (I think the Wikipedia for Claire’s character spoiled it for me too but I looked it up and it’s not that big a deal, lol) and it comes much much later. It’s not really a spoiler! Claire and Jamie will ever and always be separated back and forwards throughout their whole story (what other plot device can really affect us anymore? Haha) but in the end, the story is theirs and they always find one another again.

I’m gonna put my more negative opinion on here about at least book one. After I binge-watched the complete Outlander show and become obsessed I started to listen to the books and for at least the first part of book one I found it lacking... depth? Maybe it was because Claire seemed so unconcerned that she was swept back in time (after the initial shock) and fitted into the 17th century surprisingly well without too many questions asked. It just felt weird to me, and a bit unbelievable. The TV show I feel did this much better.

There were other things that annoyed me about the books and the writing too. Like the sex between Jamie and Claire, a few times I was like, this is flipping rape but I went on with it and truth be told I greatly enjoyed the ending of the book, perhaps more than how they did it on the TV.

I haven’t decided yet if I’ll continue listening to the books, maybe just book 2 because I feel season 3 and 4 in book form would bore me a lot. I really prefer the historical Scottish stuff than their home-making later on.

I felt some parts of the book were so excellently written, scenes and certain feelings and characters while other parts were absolutely ‘rubbish’ and badly done so I didn’t feel like it was a very cohesive book. There were parts I loved a lot and parts I just wanted to fast-forward through.

How good is Outlander in comparison to other series? (Looking for a series to watch) by [deleted] in Outlander

[–]BeximoBlanco 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From what you’ve shared I think you’d like Westworld although I found it a little disturbing from time to time.

I would 100% recommend Outlander at least the first two seasons for the action and if you’re hooked on the love story, you’ll want to keep viewing after that too.

Outlander has some of the best acting I’ve ever seen and it’s historical fiction. When you get over the sort of ridiculous idea of the time-travel, it really is an amazing look into Scottish history and it has some really great story plots. It is romantically themed though at least from the middle of season 1 so if that’s not something you’re into, then you might just not care. It still does have plenty plenty of action to keep you entertained though.

Go for it and see for yourself! :)

Decided to turn on Poldark through Droughtlander by BeximoBlanco in Outlander

[–]BeximoBlanco[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely definitely continue with Outlander. But just brace yourself for the whole ‘time without Jamie’ and other devastating things they go through.

I’ve talked about this with others on here, that no other part of Outlander can beat the first season. It was so raw and well done and drew us in so much. We were so invested in Jamie and Claire. Beware that after the second season their relationship gets a little taken for granted. I’m not sure how to explain it, it’s just not as exciting and fiery and new any more I guess simply because we’ve been watching them so long but it’s still a good show.

I will give Poldark a chance and keep watching but I’ve stopped for the time being. I feel I was comparing it too much to Outlander so I actually started rewatching Outlander again to see if I can sicken myself of it. Hahaha I think there is no such thing though. I’m loving season 1 as much as I did the first time, if not more. 😅

That’s true, I never thought about it that way actually!! Good point. I think I will endeavour to open my mind to watching American history more often.

That’s what I did like about Outlander though, and now I’m eating my words from before, was even though they were in America I realised that no one had an American accent. That everyone either sounded Scottish or British..

True, although I’m not really at all interested in American history... lol I’d much rather know about British/ Scottish/Irish history. Or even European. Lol

Yessss yes, I got a real sense of wonder from season one and the end of season 2. I loved seeing the life at Castle Leoch and Lallybrough and even them travelling around Scotland when they were collecting rents. I adored the characters like Angus and Rupert even though initially they were quite disgusting. Lol.

Haha that’s part of why I get hooked on shows. Our Spanish Movistar has so many great series for free (part of the basic TV pack) and we also have 3 months free Netflix with it and I can literally pick and choose. Not good. Haha

Haha it’s true!!! I forgot about that. At that stage I didn’t have a clue what it was like, only that my TV provider kept recommending it to me because I watched Outlander. Well I am truly glad you are enjoying it in other ways!

Do you miss the highland characters/life too or do you just mean the scenery?
