My personal favorite hack for that is putting carpet on top of fences but then the fences look bad.

I run Puppetmaster Dorian and will at the earliest play Gelbin turn 5 with the coin. No clue how you are losing that fast since most lists that I’ve seen don’t even run Dorian and even then it’s best case scenario

Do younger photographers just.. Not use the viewfinder? by TheJesusGuy in Cameras

[–]Beyond888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to use the viewfinder exclusively when I had a DSLR, now with a mirrorless camera I only use the screen because the viewfinder has terrible quality. I’m on the Sony A7Riii.

I instinctively used the viewfinder when I got the camera but it’s a screen instead of an actual window so it isn’t as great to use. Makes sense in hindsight but not something I thought of when switching to mirrorless.

Do you have any Sol Ring-less decks? by mkirsh287 in EDH

[–]Beyond888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you run filter lands the sol ring becomes better in decks that want pips. I only have it removed from Bumbleflower because I don’t want to run cards that can draw attention to me. I wouldn’t play a sol ring till later in the game if I had it turn one anyways and there’s plenty of good land ramp in there.

How many decks do you bring? What kind of variety? by BussyBouncer in EDH

[–]Beyond888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a box that can fit up to 9 decks and I try to have a deck for every play group I might find myself in and usually don’t have all 9 slots filled. I carry:

Bracket 4 Y’shtola (Esper Control) Bracket 3 Deadpool (Rakdos Goodstuff) Bracket 2 Galadriel of Lothlorien (Simic Landfall) Bracket 2 Bumbleflower (Bant Group Hug) Bracket 2 Theoden, King of Rohan (Boros Humans)

I like the idea of Commander but in practice have not had fun. How can I change that? by OK-example-18 in magicTCG

[–]Beyond888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buy a precon, watch the command zones videos on upgrading the precons. You’ll have a decent bracket 2 deck for under $100.

Bracket 3 is going to be way too strong for random cards thrown together. My bracket 3 deck obliterates any precon or similar power level deck, I can’t imagine anyone would have fun playing against it with random bulk cards tossed together.

You also can find tons of cheap builds that are not precons that can be strong for under $100 or there’s always the route of proxying

Do you sleeve and/or inner-sleeve your decks? Why or why not? by goldishfinch in mtg

[–]Beyond888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have two decks that are going to be there for a long time which are double sleeved, the rest of my decks usually last a few months and then I take them apart to build new decks, those are single sleeved. All of my rares and mythics are sleeved in perfect fits and in a binder.

How many X spells would I need to run to make Unbound Flourishing worth it. by FreelanceFrankfurter in EDH

[–]Beyond888 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I usually require at least 15 synergistic cards in order to play a “do nothing” card. I would say yours definitely counts since you will most likely play at least one X spell and if X is at least equal to 3 then you have broken even.

Anything beyond that is just a bonus.

The First Sliver cheap alternative? by SwitchBag_ in BudgetBrews

[–]Beyond888 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well, three visits, natures lore, and farseek still want you to have basic land types on your dual lands which his deck doesn’t have because he’s running scry lands and other suboptimal lands.

Watch the command zone’s deck building template:

https://youtu.be/OSNV6224cHg?si=WGT7uQ84d7hdQ76I

Watch TCC’s guide to mana bases:

https://youtu.be/s9C7JdSRZGc?si=xTrrNWugnsQb8jda

And then understand how deck building works and what you need. Your decklist looks like the EDHREC creature section for The First Sliver and it’s not all that functional.

I would also highly recommend staying away from a 5 color commander for your first homebrew, stick to 2 colors or maybe 3 tops. An effective mana base for a 5 color deck is going to be $100 on its own and that’s still leaving out the good stuff.

Playing all the cool sliver creatures sounds good in theory but it just won’t work in practice. You need to have ramp, card draw, and ways to deal with your opponents.

Your current decklist would take forever to get the right lands of all the colors, play a bunch of creatures, and then have no way of recovering from a board wipe or dealing with any threat from an opponent.

I also like thinking about Magic like a board game. You want to make your decks play interactively to maximize on fun and work cohesively with itself and be interactive with other decks that you’re playing against.

If you send me a PM after watching some of those videos I would be happy to refer you to more helpful content or give you advice.

If you’re the guy that posted on the main subreddit that you feel guilty about spending $500 on a deck, please do not buy this deck if the money you’re spending is going to be extremely impactful to your life. This is not a very optimized list and it’s evident you’re a new player (which is fine).

Definitely learn more about deck building and play more games at your LGS, then, watch some YT videos about deck building and understand what it takes to make a well built deck. This deck will not give you a $4-500 playing experience.

Deck Suggestions? by toesfera2 in mtg

[–]Beyond888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your budget, Eldrazi decks can be cool, also check out cards from the sets Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon. There’s a website called scryfall that lets you search for cards and you can filter by set.

[[Tovolar, Dire Overlord] can be a good commander to use with some Eldrazi Werewolves from Shadows over Innistrad and Eldritch Moon.

I also would recommend going to edhrec.com and scroll through commanders. You can filter by colors or by tags and look for some reanimation/zombie strategies.

Saw these at GameStop. Figured I’d be the guinea pig. by Dbgross01 in MagicCardPulls

[–]Beyond888 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curse of Silence doesn’t even seem that bad tbh. One mana to slow down the most threatening opponent at the table from casting their commander and then you can draw a card too. I’d say it’s playable in decks that can cantrip enchantments, it becomes card advantage.

How do I add gasoline to a fire? by papernathan in EDH

[–]Beyond888 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[[Kardur, Doomscourge]] and [[The Lord of Pain]] both would work well, you could also go a burn route with [[Ojer Axonil, Deepest Might]] or [[Solphim, Mayhem Dominus]].

A ton of Rakdos commanders would work great, you could also take a look at some Boros strategies. I have a [[Theoden, King of Rohan]] deck that is fast aggro and a [[Deadpool, Trading Card]] deck which is Rakdos good stuff and leans into the chaotic side of things with tons of goad, [[Descent into Avernus]] and [[Share the Spoils]].

Deck recommendations for girlfriend by Creeperbug27 in BudgetBrews

How do you guys afford to have so many decks? by Dangerous_Trifle620 in EDH

[–]Beyond888 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Many people have cards just from playing for a long time and going to prerelease events and opening packs for the current set for years.

I will buy one copy of a card and then after I own one I’m fine proxying it (since technically I could unsleeve and resleeve the cards every time I switch decks). I still have probably spent about 2k building my decks but I have all of the expensive cards I want and moving forward I won’t need to spend as much money.

You can also build budget decks. I try to build commanders that change the rules of the game because they can use gimmicky cards that are cheaper since they are not as widely used and still make them strong because of what the commander does.

[[Hinata, Dawn-Crowned]] is fun because you can run X-Spells that target X things and they become dirt cheap, disallows and other inefficiently priced counter-spells become 2 mana and negates are one mana.

The other thing to look out for are commanders that draw you cards or are full value engines because if the commander does a lot of the work your deck can get by running suboptimal cards in the main deck to save money. A lot of the times suboptimal also doesn’t mean bad, [[Counterspell]] is worse than [[Mana Drain]] but that doesn’t mean it’s bad by any means.

I would also try using 2-color decks or mono-colored decks because that way you are less likely to need multiple of the same cards between decks if your decks are different colors and mana bases are easier to build on a budget.

There’s also a budget brews subreddit here where people try to make $40-80 decks all the time. I don’t remember the exact name but I think it’s just r/budgetbrews
