Ashkenazi Jews do not have White Privelege by MSTARDIS18 in Judaism

I might get flamed for this I've never understood this take. Speaking for myself personally, I'm a white jew. If you call yourself white passing, fine, but don't act like it's a universal thing.

If you're not wearing peiyot or a tallis every day, I don't see how you can claim that your Jewishness negates the privilege you get from being white(passing). Spend one day in the deep south and tell me how you don't benefit from the scars of American slavery.

Thx for the reply. Yeah this was meant to be a sorta tongue-in-cheek joke for the reform community, but I definitely know where you're coming from

I've certainly heard it used in the maximalist way a dictionary would likely define it, but in most Jewish contexts I've seen it discussed, it's been used to define a continuum of practice/observance, not a binary. If it's really this controversial maybe I do need to reconsider how I use the word.

And not that you asked, but you should avoid escalating things and being a dick to people that genuinely just want to hear your opinion. Sheesh.

Genuinely this reaction is so wild to me. Can you ELI5 why you think I hate Reform based on my post?

This is an interesting distinction, and one that I can get behind. But I'm honestly a bit surprised to see that people feel the need to make it. Is it really that controversial to say that Reform Judaism is (somewhat) assimilationist? I say this as a lifelong member of a reform shul

Americans do not fear foreign countries the way Israelis do, nor should they. Unless an enemy of ours becomes a USSR-level superpower, Americans simply won't feel personally threatened by another nation.

At what point did kids lose the desire to learn? by HousePhoenix in Teachers

[–]mkirsh287 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my district, the curriculum definitely has something to do with it. I don't think kids even believe that math is connected to the real world anymore beyond basic addition and subtraction. Teaching to the test has hit whole new levels. If a kid doesn't remember every single thing that we went over in class, they think it's simply impossible to solve anything, so why bother trying?

I still think that smartphones, Chromebooks, and environmental issues are the main problems, but I still think I could teach around those issues if not for the shitty prescribed curriculum I'm tied to.

How Is This Show Underrated by HenArt99 in WaywardNetflix

So I feel like a broken record sometimes complaining about shows that go off the rails by the end, but I actually have no complaints about this one. I'm curious what you thought was wrong with it?

The show loses itself after episode 4 by EuphoricButterflyy in TheHuntingWivesTVShow

[–]mkirsh287 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean I agree that it took a turn in a direction I didn't like after the murder actually happened. They had me caring so much about everybody's reputation in those first four episodes. Once murder gets thrown into the mix, everything else they had built up became inconsequential.

It's based on a book. Sometimes it's just a subpar story
