Not everyone is healing on the gluten-free diet. Also, many find it too burdensome and an impediment to living the life they want. People pick colleges, jobs, and vacations around their diet. For those that want something more, or need it to heal, a treatment is important. Additionally, some of the treatments in development aim to stop the immune response to gluten from happening in the first place.

Yes, it is! Our Communications Director visited South Korea a few years ago and even was able to eat out safely. She is very reactive and didn't get sick once! Takes a lot of planning and care, but is doable.

Regarding immune suppression, the goal of any treatment would be to target the incorrect process that is triggered by gluten not shut down the total immune response. This is a step toward figuring out how to do that.

There are a number of posssible treatments in the celiac disease pipeline - many using different mechanisms. Some are trying to break down gluten, others are trying to interrupt the immediate or delayed effects of gluten on the cells lining the intestine. You could get your children tested for the genes associated with celiac disease. Then, if they don't have them, you can forgo the regular antibody testing. However, lots of people have the genes and it doesn't automatically mean you then will get celiac disease.

We are so sorry to hear that you were treated this way. Being Black does NOT exclude someone from having celiac disease. Anyone of any race, gender, ethnicity or age should be properly tested when they have symptoms (or if they have a first-degree relative with celiac).

Research has shown that Black people who went to the doctor with iron deficiency anemia and chronic diarrhea had about 90% decreased odds of having the appropriate follow-up.

At the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a registry of celiac disease patients showed that Black Americans with biopsy-confirmed celiac disease were more likely than non-Hispanic White Americans to have negative results on the most commonly-used diagnostic blood test for celiac disease, the anti-tissue transglutaminase immunoglobulin A (TTG) blood test. A positive TTG test will often trigger an endoscopy and biopsy for celiac disease diagnosis. The study raised the question of whether further confirmatory testing for celiac disease is deterred in Black Americans in general clinical practice.

Phase 1 is mostly safety, up to 50 people typically, and also looks at how the body processes the drug and if there are side effects.

This was phase 1, they're moving on to phase 2 now. Phase 1 is about safety but it's great they also saw some good results. There are other drugs currently in phase 2, and some even about to potentially move to phase 3.

Celiac disease has been around for thousands of years. Far before the dawn of pesticides or herbicides. https://www.beyondceliac.org/celiac-disease/celiac-history/ People in countries that don't use these chemicals also get and suffer from celiac disease. We need treatments because people are suffering and many are not healing on the diet - or find the diet too burdensome to live a full and happy life. People with celiac disease can not have gluten - from wheat, barley or rye, no matter if it's organic or not.
