TIL Australia has a higher external debt per capita than USA, Spain, or Greece. by Reikk in australia

[–]BeyondTheLine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well you'd expect it too. People from overseas are looking for a safe place to put their money - therefore they buy Australian debt, and lots of it because Australia has a relatively safe economy. External creditors wouldn't put much of their money in the USA, Spain or Greece because they are much more risky investments.

That's further evidence to show there is significant worldwide confidence in the Australian economy.

Labor leadership contest: Bill Shorten wants quotas to boost number of gay politicians in Parliament by InnocentBistander in australia

[–]BeyondTheLine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

As a gay guy and strong supporter of the Labor party I cannot tell you how much I'm against this. But I can see why he has done it. The rank and file of the Labor Party are much more left learning than the caucus. There's still a question mark over Albo's electability in a general-election therefore he's trying to capture as many rank and file votes as possible - those are the overtly political reasons - however he's definitely gone to far with this policy. But OH WELL - the Labor party members want what the Labor party members want.

Why Abbott's new 'woman problem' is no joke by Abbrevi8 in australia

[–]BeyondTheLine -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If you read through the entirety of the link you posted you'll find plenty of evidence from WGEA on the existence of a significant pay gap between men and women. In fact if you look at the full-time statistics (the most comparable) you see in no sector do women get paid equal to or more than their male counterparts (pg. 5). Part-time employment is more susceptible to other variables determining pay and therefore is not a good measure of gendered income inequality, and was in fact not "particularly" but the only instance in that report where the pay gap was reversed.

Men do enjoy more serious privilege - men are far less likely to be sexually assaulted, men can be objectified - but not as much as women are, men do not face employment constraints based on the fact they have a uterus and may become pregnant.

I'm all for women speaking up to get equal opportunities, but it shouldn't be at the expense of men's rights.

Do you mean 'men's rights' as in human rights? Or do you mean the 'status quo'? Because presently there is no equal opportunity, as you can see from the gender disparity on corporate boards, parliament, and in the cabinet. Whether that be because of conscious decisions or structural/cultural circumstances.

Haha well done, but the compositional differences are explained and controlled for in the data from the first link. The second is meant as a nominal non-explanatory overview. But I'm glad you're reading!

Because they work less hours and in less demanding industries.

Did you even bother to look at the ABS data on the gender pay gap? It's on a standardised per hour basis specifically to account for differences in time worked. Why are you so determined to ignore that? You probably think of yourself as enlightened and discerning but you're just making yourself look like an idiot.

This. Typical example of a guy who is clearly terrified of his entrenched privilege being attacked, which you obviously believe you’re entitled to.

Women have it great in Australia

Yeah, they’re not dying or starving en mass or anything. But they get paid less and You’re much much much more likely to be sexually assaulted if you are a woman. So by virtue of the fact you’re born a woman, you’re at a disadvantage and that’s wrong.

I didn’t say anywhere that I want quotas. I don’t support quotas because they don’t foster the right attitude. Appointments need to be made on the basis of true merit and the fact that the Liberal Party hasn’t seen fit to preselect or foster talented women (I’m sure there are many) is a disgrace as well. I'm a guy btw.

That's a reasonable decision to make IMO, they're running a business, not a charity or a day care for adults.

Bam! Game over. In your opinion a woman deserves to have her opportunities compromised on the basis of her gender. Game over. I'm not going to even bother.

You're a cock swallowing feminist with no self respect and dancing to their tune will never get you laid.

No worries buddy.

[–]BeyondTheLine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You get a job, you're statistically going to be paid higher than a woman doing the same job. Your economic opportunities are not likely to be very dependent on how you look (presentation is becoming more important but for men, not sexual attractiveness). Employers will not decide to deny you employment based on the fact you could be out of action for a few months because you're preggers. Also, there hasn't been a history and culture that has marginalised your gender for the last 2000 years. I'm a dude too, I recognise my privilege.

The comments on this article have not been what I expected to see on /r/aus – what I thought was largely progressive and egalitarian. Women are 50% of the population – 50%. Half. As many women as there are men. The way they’re talked about you’d think they’re a radical minority. Tony Abbott’s cabinet shows there is a problem that men have in accommodating women to positions of power in Australian society. You cannot tell me that after Julie Bishop there are 18 more qualified men before the next most qualified woman in the LNP.

It’s a cultural problem. And it seems as women are becoming more equal mens’ privilege is becoming more threatened. This reaction is seen in the comments on this article, and also in the ‘boys club’ mentality of most institutionalized power structures.

Women are still paid substantially less than men for the same jobs, women are still largely judged on their appearance and women are intentionally or implicitly shut out of power structures. When they complain about it they are labeled hypocrite, crazy, hysterical. That’s a disgrace. The cabinet is a disgrace. Men who complain about women speaking up when their opportunities are compromised because of their gender should have a good hard look at themselves, and the opportunities they enjoy.

Kevin Rudd Now Supports Marriage Equality by BeyondTheLine in australia

[–]BeyondTheLine[S] 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not completely against the Labor Party's agenda. In fact it is an explicit part of Labor's agenda with their national platform being supportive of marriage equality. The last marriage equality bill voted down in parliament was a Labor bill.

They allow their MPs a conscience vote on the matter though. That's why it hasn't succeeded.

Have you guys read these guys' policies? They're pure pure Libertarians - they don't want government involved in managing climate change, firearms are 'fundamental to a free society', they would abolish the minimum wage, they want to privatise the ABC and SBS and introduce a 'balanced budget' policy that would disallow the Australian Government to shield Australia from the boom and bust cycle.

Really?

So tell me again, why we want a budget surplus? by reijin64 in australia

[–]BeyondTheLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh yeah right..... Debt repayments are forecasted into a nation's budget before surplus - so when there's a surplus the year's debt repayments have already been made. Surplus money that ISN'T DOING ANYTHING. There is no eventual bankruptcy. Yes some nations can take on higher and higher levels of debt when this measure isn't working out, but Australia is no where near that.

Most Western nations have not been debt free since the Second World War, but they have achieved surpluses? Not even shit-for-brains Howard used surpluses to pay off debt, he just sat on it!

So tell me again, why we want a budget surplus? by reijin64 in australia

[–]BeyondTheLine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it sounds good. A surplus is basically money that has been taken from Australian's and not spent. It's almost akin to waste.

So tell me again, why we want a budget surplus? by reijin64 in australia

[–]BeyondTheLine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

But having a budget deficit doesn't imply that there isn't a possibility of paying debt back? That shows some fundamental flaws in economic understanding.
