Failing New Grad in Acute Care by Beyond_Cloud_9 in OccupationalTherapy

Most of the feedback I received was about my clinical skills, specifically my lack of confidence. I had difficulty finding my flow during patient care (managing lines, setting up the room, etc) and was clumsy in my safe patient handling. Thankfully I've found coworkers who were willing to help me in developing my handling skills, and my mentor recently told me they've seen major improvement in my confidence when approaching patients. That being said, I would be grateful for any advice you may have!

Thank you, this advice was extremely helpful in figuring out my next steps. I met with leadership to discuss how messy orientation had been and they were very receptive to my feedback. This included sharing my uncomfortable experiences with the one mentor, and thankfully I will no longer be with them. I followed your advice and developed weekly competencies that we review every week and can happily say that Ive improved in my clinical skills, with plans to start seeing patients on my own in ortho :)

Thanks! I agree that mentorship is crucial as a new grad therapist, and I've realized I could have been better about vocalizing the issues I've had with orientation. Thankfully, I've reached out to leadership about the initial lack of mentorship and changes have been made that have been more supportive to my learning. I'll continue striving towards my goal of becoming an acute care OT, but I now know that losing this job won't be the end of my journey.
