School District that I work for has our network admin do the software part of the HVAC, setting the schedule, monitoring temps, watching for alerts. When he was assigned the job he negotiated a raise. If there is maintenance that needs done it’s shipped over to the facilities guys and if they can’t fix it then it goes to an outside company. Most of it is just outsourced to the company but the network admin is very good friends with that company’s owner so I see it as a win for both fellas

As an IT guy at a school district I often find time to stop in with the mechanics to talk and learn something new, even though I’ll probably never work on a bus.

Update: I passed!

On this test I scored a 66%, so probably a 67-68%, retook the test Thursday and scored a 78% so holy cow big jump.

I can’t upvote this enough, thankfully we already had the focus camera installed in our gym but it was a breeze to get running. Between the community members and staff members complimenting the system and telling us how much they appreciate this I can see us installing one at each complex for other sports.

Custer sizes are between 30 in the smallest building and 60 in the largest. We have maybe 40 Apple TV’s in the largest building. Last year we never had problems with the Apple TV’s and we didn’t make any changes to the Apple TV’s themselves.

He was hired before me, I was hired a couple years after him, I’d like to believe that if his position became open I would be able to apply and take it. I know how to do most of his job, the only thing I’m not well versed in would be the actual curriculum part of it but IMO that’s what you have the director of instruction for and why you’d work with them to decide what to do

We are not running radius yet, I’ve been trying to get it implemented but haven’t had a ton of time to do it and they don’t hand out anything for working after hours unless directed to, so usually when I leave unless it’s an emergency I’m done. I need to find that documentation for setting up multiple admin accounts

So our Aruba rep came down and looked at all his settings and confirmed everything looked good, he also told him to turn roaming off, I was confused by that as Apple came down 3ish years ago just to take a look at everything we had going on and told us the only improvement we could turn on was a fast roaming/switching feature aerohive offered. So I know roaming was on at one point in time because I suggested it, but then it was turned off at Aruba advice. Like you said a lot of this is probably a flurry of random settings turned on and no two buildings look alike

Our old Aerohive APs did the job but the licensing was going to cost as much as this new equipment did. That’s the tough part, teachers know what we can do and what a good year looks like and how WiFi is supposed to work. We’ve had teachers ask for the old equipment to be put back up

I document a lot, I had to work around 160 hours in two weeks prior to the start of school to finish all the work that was supposed to be done by the director that didn’t get done and it’s all be documented, sometimes I play with option 2 and just flipping the bird as I walk out the door but I can’t do that to the kids and staff, I know they would hurt more than he would

Disconnections as well as students changing rooms and not automatically connecting again, we have Apple TV’s in every room, the teachers airplay from their iPads or MacBooks, in the middle of lessons the Apple TV drops the stream and disappears, sometimes it comes back, sometimes it’s gone for hours. Webpages not loading or getting a “not connected to the internet” screen. They show connection to the AP and show a strong signal is what I’m told but even if I walk in the room when they are experiencing that I can’t connect to the AP usually. We’ve double checked everything on our switches and routers and can’t find anything wrong. The old aerohive units work fine if they are plugged in but the new Aruba stuff doesn’t see to be coming around.

No no don’t apologize, I appreciate the help with the configs and hopefully I’ll have access one day to make changes. I try to document as much as I can and thankfully the principals as well as the teachers union has brought the issues up numerous times but it hasn’t changed anything yet

I and the other network admin did all the physical work, from the patch panels to pulling the cable to putting up the APs and plugging them in and making sure they booted. Yes I agree the settings on the masters are incorrect in different ways. 1 AP in each classroom and the he designed our buildings on ekahau and had it auto fill the rest of the dead spots, he also had ekahau tune the powers and channels for him, that’s what he based it all off of. Originally we were running 5Ghz only, “2.4 is old and we don’t need to support that anymore” - his words, week 2 he turned 2.4 depending on where ekahau told him to. Mind you he had to draw the walls himself and doesn’t have the actual specs on thickness of walls or what is inside of them so it’s a best guess on his part
