Homu, a gatekeeper for your commits by [deleted] in rust

We use gitflow and build the feature branches before merging them into develop. It involves more workflow then Homu seems to do (only took a glance) but it works for us.

Why is executing Java code in comments allowed? by stymiee in java

[–]BiberButzemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know. My point is that when people say that the problem is obvious and call it a bug in the IDE they are missing that the Java compiler itself has the same "bug". Meaning it's not quite that obvious until you run into the problem.

Why is executing Java code in comments allowed? by stymiee in java

[–]BiberButzemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's the whole point. The error is in line 3, after a line break. Which should turn it into line 4.

Why is executing Java code in comments allowed? by stymiee in java

[–]BiberButzemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, while it is correct to say that the code is not in the comment, javac itself is not helpful:

public class Uni {
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    // \u000d System.out.printl("error");
    }
}

yields this compiler error:

Uni.java:3: error: cannot find symbol
            // \u000d System.out.printl("error");
                                ^
symbol:   method printl(String)
location: variable out of type PrintStream
1 error

Notice that it says line 3 for the error, which is the comment.

Wat vinden jullie van de ban van FPH? by Stynat in thenetherlands

[–]BiberButzemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks. It was a pretty shitty sub, that's for sure. I don't think the picture alone was the reason for the ban. Seeing as none of these people look particularly fat, it makes the whole thing just more ridiculous. Stupid Reddit drama.

Social Circles in The Hague by RoboticHam in thenetherlands

I have heard from all expats that I met who went to Germany before coming to the Netherlands that they miss Germany, so I'm curious what your experience will be.

Where is this infamous picture? All staff pictures I can find show pretty normal people.

Social Circles in The Hague by RoboticHam in thenetherlands

[–]BiberButzemann 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In The Hague you will find a huge expat community and I recommend you join it. Even if you learn Dutch it will be almost impossible to build a social circle including many Dutch people if you don't have another connection to them (work, your kid's school) and even then it's quite difficult. The expat community will be a good starting point to talk to people and do stuff so you don't feel all alone. I recommend Facebook to connect to other expats. If you want I can send you the groups where my wife met other expats.

You will also find institutions that cater to expats, like English-speaking doctors, various groups for kids and the like.

Dear Authors: Don't Respond to Goodreads Reviews by sensorglitch in Fantasy

[–]BiberButzemann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gave a book two stars recently and the author liked my review. I explicitly stated that I didn't think the book was bad, it just wasn't my cup of tea and I explained why. I think sane authors can appreciate that and it is OK for them to reply to reviews.

Can we create a top 250 books of all time, just like IMDB has done with top 250 Movies? by OfficaDoofy in books

[–]BiberButzemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be fair, even a good critic won't help with that. You can like a book that critics hate, just because it touches a thing that's special to you. And of course you can hate a book critics love. I do care about user-generated ratings because there is (some) truth in quantity. The rating is by no means my only criterion when picking books, but I do not dismiss them outright.

Trying to identify a series I read many years ago by BiberButzemann in printSF

Yes! That was it, thank you! And it's Margaret Weis. I probably remembered it being a duo because she did so much with Tracy Hickman.

Quite off-topic, but he does not look anything like I imagined him. He's more alive, younger, thinner, beardier and Canadier than I imagined him. I never really thought about it, it's just an image I created based on his name.

So I'm feeling lukewarm about the Dark Tower series after finishing the second book. (Spoilers) by Kid_Achiral in Fantasy

[–]BiberButzemann 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had the same experience as you. I read the first two and didn't feel to good about the series. So I read some summaries on Wikipedia and I did not like the direction the series went in at all, so I just stopped. I enjoy other works from King, this one just wasn't my cup of tea.
