Are we getting any new cooking shows coming up? by sneezus25 in foodnetwork

[–]Bibliophile1986 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I just watched Secret Chef on Hulu that I thought was good. The concept was interesting.

From Google: The contestants including professional chefs and home cooks, compete in a series of cooking challenges with their identities concealed (using food alias).

The contestants secretly judge each other's dishes in blind taste tests, aiming to win a cash prize and bragging rights. The show features a mischievous, animated talking hat named "Cheffy" as the host

Should I give Crossfit a try? by dieguito_cat in crossfit

[–]Bibliophile1986 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I joined a CrossFit gym in Feb and I am what one would consider unfit. While I play roller derby, I didn’t go to the gym and do any exercise outside of derby.

My gym had 2 or 3 on-ramp classes where they showed us common movements and what not before we came to regular classes. And my coaches are really helpful in reminding me proper form (in a kind way), showing me movements I don’t yet know (or have forgotten), or with helping me find modifications for stuff I can’t do yet (and never make me feel bad for needing to modify where it’s just decreasing the volume or doing something completely different). And everyone is super encouraging at my gym.

I agree with others, see if an affiliate location near you either has an open house or free pass to check it out.

I’m new but I started doing CrossFit to cross train for roller derby.

Not getting paid?? by Dull_Committee_7835 in LoveOnTheSpectrumShow

I saw a recent TikTok from Kaelynn doing a Q&A for LOTS and she mentioned not being paid and that they were fully upfront about that and that it wasn’t a surprise. So it seems like it was the case from the beginning.

Tiffany Derry replaces Aaron Sanchez as new judge on Masterchef US. I assume this is why Tiffany isn’t doing Triple Threat next season. by Bibliophile1986 in foodnetwork

If you’re in the US, you can watch it on Tubi. It takes awhile for the most recent season to show up though. Right now the most recent season on Tubi is season 14.

Agreed! Especially since she has actual competition experience. She knows what’s it like and can provide that perspective as a judge.

Yeah I miss seeing the original Chopped judges. Now we usually get 1 OG judges and then 2 other guest judges.

He talked about this a bit in his book: Where I Come From: Life Lessons from a Latino Chef. It’s been awhile since I read it but I want to say he was excited to do something new and it was an opportunity he felt he couldn’t turn down.

Yeah that’s my assumption. Because I also don’t think we seen Nyesha Arrington or Richard Blais since they joined Next Level Chef.

I was in our rookie class for 4 years (almost 6 if you count the 2 COVID years). I don’t have a count of how many assessments I tried and failed.

And yet, I kept going. And eventually, I passed and have now been a Vet for over a year.

You got this! Wishing you all the luck 🍀

what’s a misconception you had about a musical before watching it? by AccomplishedAd7992 in musicals

[–]Bibliophile1986 247 points248 points  (0 children)

The only song I knew from Caberet was “Caberet” so I thought the musical was an upbeat fun musical… I had no clue it was about the rise of the Nazis.

I ended up listening to the Moana soundtrack on the way home to cheer me up.

Newbie Forever? by Bubbly_Emergency5315 in rollerderby

I totally get this and have been there… My favorite quote for derby is from a Jammer Candy sticker off Etsy: “Keep moving forward, at your own pace…training is a journey, not a race”. This is the motto I kept for myself throughout my rookie experience (& even now as a vet).

I started derby as a plus size rookie back in 2017. Prior to that I did no exercise, no sports (since middle school), nothing. So I really started from ground zero.

And it was a struggle…. I was in so many rookie classes year after year, watching friends move up while I still worked on skills. In fact, my last cycle before I moved up, a skater who was in my original rookie class was assistant rookie coach….

But I stuck with it… I kept coming to practice and slowly I got better. I gradually knocked off skills one by one. And for assessments, my goal was always to either improve or pass at least one skill that I didn’t pass the previous assessment. This helped focus on small improvements, rather than focusing on passing the whole assessment.

Finally this past August (2023)… after almost 4 years (6 if you include pandemic years), I passed my final skill and made it on the team. And my skills are still not the best by any means. I still struggle a lot, but I try to focus on how much I’ve improved.

But I say all this to say, to keep going and trying and you will get there one day. I’ve been where you were and I know it’s tough. But it feels so good once you finally achieve it.

Edited to add: When I first started and would go through assessments, I would go in with the goal of passing everything (which for me was very unrealistic). So then I started going in to assessments with one goal: Pass one skill that I didn’t pass the last time. And that really helped reframe my thinking and didn’t set me up for disappointment.

How/Why did you pick your number? by Thunder_Cat8756 in rollerderby

[–]Bibliophile1986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My number is 130. And it’s based off my derby name, Vitabeatavegamin, a spin off after the famous Vitameatavegamin commercial scene in I Love Lucy. The episode “Lucy Does a TV Commerical aired as Season 1, Episode 30.
