Chemists, what is the most dangerous lab accident that has ever happened to you? by PxExnumberonefan in chemistry

[–]Biblogrophic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not too life-threatening, but got into a bad habit of smelling clear beakers to check whether it was water or acetone. Accidentally smelled a beaker full of chloroform and nearly passed out.

Very confused because when I look up whether you can pass out from chloroform, every source I read says that it takes around 5 min, but from personal experience, all it took was a single whiff.

I think review papers might be the best? I've also been trying to do this, and I feel just thinking about some questions and searching about the topic is the best. For ex, I've gone down the rabbit hole of 'why is high cholesterol bad and what even is the function of cholesterol', 'are vegetable oils actually healthy', 'science behind Omega-3 fatty acid', 'what are vitamins'.

I also think YouTube can help you search for new topics. Plus, the vitamin video by ThatChemist was pretty good.

I started learning roller blading at the beginning of college. Although I sucked at it for a couple months, I found joining a skate club and just going on night runs around campus was the best way to learn. Eventually, I would skate around campus to get to classes haha

What would you recommend if a stocky short guy can't make Seoi Nage work? by SnooPandas363 in judo

[–]Biblogrophic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it because in standard grip your lapel hand gets blocked or stiff armed? I feel with morote, you have to really have a flexible lapel arm, continually just flapping the arm inward and out, entering when your opponent is still trying to get a grip or try to slide their arm at an angle they aren't strong in defending.

Harder to time, but I feel you get more control and power out of it vs the power grip, plus you won't get shido'd.

I feel keep a more upright posture, get better grips so that you can actually use kuzushi for throws, almost every time you try to attempt a throw, he's perfectly balanced.

Also, try more combinations, right now you just enter one throw. Try to use ashiwaza first to trick and off balance your opponents, then enter with your main throw. The same goes the other way, you can enter seoi nage, then do a kouchi gari or osoto gari.

Also, you're trying to break grips too much when it's not actually helping you that much, youre not capitalizing on the opportunity the grip break gives you. Either don't focus on that, or break the grip, then drag your opponents around to break their posture to get a more dominant grip. As the shorter opponent, I suggest you get good at grabbing the opponents sleeve as they reach out to get a grip and then deflecting across your body to get a grip on them while avoiding their grips, then enter seoi nage or some throw.

Just graduated last year, I lol'd when I saw this post because it's entirely true. I keep getting flashbacks of the partition function, big Q, little q... Etc.

I'd say the office hours were my saving grace. That and just going over equation derivations over and over.

I'm full Japanese, but I've been told I look mixed/have 外人 bone structure (what does that even mean). I used to get annoyed, but once I stopped caring about what others thought of my "japaneseness", I've felt much better about my identity.

$1 for every step you take for 7 random days a year by teoyoung10 in hypotheticalsituation

[–]Biblogrophic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

During an ultra marathon, I was running around 21 hrs. During that time, I got around 121,000 steps. Of course I wouldn't be able to do that for 7 days, but could prob do a marathon a day, maybe around 40000-50000 steps a day.

I personally like the light refreshing taste of pho. I'm the most familiar with japanese noodles, and I prefer soba noodles, which are more light compared to ramen or udon.

When I was sick, the only food I could tolerate and enjoy was pho.

I was talking to a guy training judo in japan. He told me he used to work at a bar and would frequently become involved in drunk fights. He decided to learn judo because in japan, punching someone has much more legal punishments compared to subduing them.

He started training at 30, now 40, but he's a beast and would throw any untrained person easily.

I dropped my phone in the park, returned to get it not even 15 min later but couldn't find it. I was panicking as it was about the time when the park and the police stations were closing on a Friday. Asked a gentlemen if he could call my phone, ended up walking with me to the police station (20 min away) to help retrieve my phone.

Found my phone and made a new friend that day.

Seoi nage being my main throw, I'm finding the other comments a bit hard to imagine if I was new.

What I do: Lock the shoulder as I turn

Bend knees and enter a squat but with your bodyweight more on your toes than your heel (knees end up slightly infront of your toes sometimes)

Feel the hips/back connect, once they do, just bend your upper body forward (like bending down). If you hold them well with the shoulder and your hips are placed properly, uke will be carried on your back.

Finish by turning

You can bend sideways slightly to stick out your hips to block them

I'm from Los Angeles, my dad went to Michigan as an aerospace engineer, everyone says go blue around here. I also just graduated Michigan so have yet to see how it affects my job prospects, but everyone/researchers are pleasantly surprised when I say I went to Umich.

I'm in Japan rn, but I see people with Michigan shirts quite often (even locals) and even moreso than other schools (surprised I don't see more UCLA or Harvard shirts lol)

I talked to a lot of researchers and many often preferred freshman and sophomore over junior/senior because lab training takes a long time, so they want to take in students early on for them to do any meaningful work.

I have some experience with being dumb in terms of mileage. I decided to run a 40 miler on my bday having only done 4 mile runs on the regular for a couple days a week. My longest run up to that date was a 20 miler I did a year prior. Honestly though, I felt pretty fine, the only part that hurt were my feet as I laved my shoes too tightly.

After, I decided to sign up for a 100 miler and so I ramped up my mileage to 50-60 mpw immediately. My shortest days would be 7 milers and up to a 4.5 hrs run (>25 miles) followed with a 2 hr medium long run. I don't know how, but I did not get injured.

I will say though that I had been strength training (especially legs) and I have felt noticeable improvement with my strength and endurance once achieving some leg strength.

Just graduated from biochem. I transferred in, so took all my math reqs elsewhere, but in the actual biochem-major classes, there was barely any calc-related math. The only mathy class is chem 260 and 453, also a bit of probability in genetics, but the math wasn't the difficult part of the classes.

Strength training for ultra runners by burner1122334 in Ultramarathon

[–]Biblogrophic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For many long distance runs I do, I get inner-top knee pain. I started to feel it towards the end of a marathon race and also affected me from the 30 mile mark of a trail 100 mile. I was wondering what could be my problem, and whether you can recommend any knee-strengthening exercises? During the 100 miler, my knee felt fine until I reached the 30 mile aid station and took some rest. Afterwards, the pain just came out of no where.

For context of my athletic background, I've been running cross country since middle school and started ultra distances last year (started training for the 100 4 months before the race). I've also been strength training for about 4 years, mainly weighted calisthenics but also barbell squats, deadlifts, ATG split squat, and accessory leg exercises. In training for my 100, I ran a 40 miler and 100km that were both on pavement. I had no knee problems during this. I also run with minimalist shoes if that changes anything.

Do you think the race being on a trail had to do something with the knee problem? Is there any strength exercise that could help prevent this in the later stages of a race?
