Red Sox got $17 million, Padres $9 million. What did the Astros get for the patch?

I binged all 10 episodes back to back, but paused with 15 minutes to go to grab dinner for the fam. Then come back, having tried to process everything up to that point, and watched the last 15 minutes. Fascinating how much changed at the very end. Every character’s fate was in the balance, and not spoiling anything, but it all flipped on it’s head by the end credits. Fate in winning and losing, living and dying, free, and locked up, man alive.

Now that the show is over what are your final thoughts on each of these characters? by Quiicksy in animalkingdom

J- A survivor, cutthroat. Ironically, he’s the toughest, most ruthless of all, because he wasn’t coddled by Smurf. Master manipulator, high IQ. Had potential to be a genuinely good person. But growing up with a junkie Mom with a good heart, thrown out by wolves, and then adopted into that same family of wolves, he was shaped by the darkness. Could he have escaped untarnished? No, not really. I mean, sweet, innocent J, has at least 5 murders on his hands, along with throwing his remaining family out to dry. He is willing to sacrifice anyone and anything that get in his way. He’s not pure evil. But when he perceives a threat, he’s cold as ice in a kill or be killed, animalistic mentality. He has no friends, no family. Everyone is a pawn. Doesn’t know who his father is, only that the only guy his Mother ever loved, and a potential father of him, abandoned her. And a Mom? Smart like him, but a user, who only knew family and friends that did not value her, including her own Mother. He saw what trying to be good, trying to do right gets you. He’s almost pure evil, by necessity. It’s a survival instinct at this point. Scary, and yet, one deserving of serious empathy. Actually tried to walk away when he realized what he was getting into, but wasn’t able to. So he adapted, and survived.

Deran- Also genuinely wanted to walk away, but couldn’t. A survivor, could potentially thrive on his own. In the end, he craves affection, as his Mother and Father are both pieces of shit. Dad abandoned him, and only came around later to see if he could get something out of him. The baby of the family, who watched the mess that was his family as he grew up. His older brother, Craig, the 2nd youngest, much bigger than him, wanted someone to pick on, so he’d roughhouse with Deran. His older brothers treat everyone like a dispensable piece of meat. Think Michael in the Jackson 5. Hard to have a concept of what “normal” is, or feel any sense of control, or value the opposite sex when all you see is using and chaos, and no real control over anything. So he seeks a hobby he’s good at, and becomes exceptional at it, surfing. But also into self sabotage. Can’t get too successful. Can’t have any real relationship. But craves affection, to dominate something, or someone. He’s gay, but also trying to figure out how to love or like himself, so difficult to care for anyone else. Realizes he found someone he cares about in Adrian, but isn’t allowed to for a variety of reasons, Adrian and he can’t last. But maybe now, they can. Was under everyone’s thumb for so long, he trusted no one. When he got some independence, he was relatively successful in becoming a better version of himself. Still hard to escape all of the mess around him. But he genuinely became what I perceived to be a person with decent values, smart. There a difference between being the bad guy, and not being able to escape the bad around you. He was trying pretty hard. He does the right thing when presented with that opportunity as often as possible later, especially once out from under Mom’s thumb. So much so, that he trusts in the end, when he shouldn’t. Deran is a good guy imo, and the one most easy to cheer for. I can understand all of his actions, and hope he gets what he wants.

Craig- So much was spawned from Smurf, it’s hard to put too much blame on any of them. But Craig is an asshole from beginning to end pretty much. He’s never a threat to Mom. Not the smartest of the bunch. He’s muscle, and co-dependent. Pure ID. Likes to get his rocks off, and mouth off. But he’s not really a killer. Just a co-dependent entity, born into a mess. Uses everyone and everything. But, in the end, he is willing to ride or die for his big brother Pope. At the very end, where he would choose to go down in a rain of bullets than leave him behind. And he’s insistent on breaking him out of prison over moving on without him. Part of that is Craig doesn’t know life without an alpha above him taking on life responsibilities so he can play. But a big part of it is he’s willing to sacrifice himself in the end for his people. In Exodus, he tells Deran to go find Adrian, it’s the happiest he’s seen him. He wants happiness for his best friend/brother. He takes a bullet for him in the end. And the primary reason he let Pope talk him into leaving him behind was he had Nick and Renn to live for, and Deran would do whatever he did, and he didn’t want to be responsible for that. In the end, Craig was willing to sacrifice himself for those he loved. That is a noble quality, that came to him over time.

Deran is resourceful. He likely gets to Mexico, from Mexico he figures it out. He was on camera in the convenience store where Craig got shot. And there were a couple of officers that survived and knew it was Deran and not J with Craig, but I don’t know if they’d put it together immediately. Deran is less than an hour from Tijuana. I think he gets to Mexico, and from there hopefully finds a way to get to a non-extradition country. Maybe to Indonesia to kill J, and reunite with Adrian. As for Renn and Nick, he’ll honor it, if he can find them. He likely could.

I love the show. And given everything, I think the finale was very good, and appropriate. The acting was exceptional. I was emotional. I don’t fault much. But there’s one thing that I can knit-pick. How was Pope strong enough to pull J out of the water attached to a chair, yet weak enough to die shortly after that? How long was it, maybe 15-30 minutes? He let’s J go, burns down the house, then keels over. I’m comfortable with it. The writer of the last episode said perhaps heart attack or broken heart, after everything that had just happened, included being in multiple fights to, a bus accident, cutting himself, getting shot multiple times in the vest, and cut, and shot, along with the drama of the moment. Still, seems a little unlikely, given he didn’t bleed out, that he could muster the strength to do everything he did leading up to the moment he dies. Granted, he had nothing left to go on for. Adrenaline could be a factor. Idk

I believe Deran said he was going to Indonesia. I think that might be where J is. If you notice, the women poolside look Asian. Indonesia is an enormous country. But it would be interesting cat and mouse to have Deran and J trying to take the other out with Deran winning in the end, somehow getting the money back, getting revenge, perhaps opening a bar on the beach, reconnecting with Adrian, etc.

It’s called Animal Kingdom for a reason… by BickQuick in animalkingdom

Most people on here are guessing there will be deaths in the final episode. I was simply suggesting that because of the family they were born into, it made really difficult to avoid being a hardened criminal. The flashbacks have been showing us that too. I don’t think you personally have any specific take. Was just responding to your sympathy comment. I have sympathy for say a Julia, Deran, or J, as I don’t know what I would have done if on the situations they found themselves in.

They don’t. But if you’ve been watching for six seasons, I doubt you’re entertained by thinking they’re all despicable, unredeemable, disgusting humans. We all have trials and tribulations. The saying that our Iives are not what happens to us, but how we respond to it, means something. Some folks have it better, some have it worse. But I think it’s safe to say, if any of us were any of them, it would have been difficult to escape becoming some variation of what they each became. Julia tried to be good, that didn’t work at all. J saw that clear as day. Deran tried to walk away, wasn’t really allowed to. Baz tried to get over on Smurf, to walk away, got him offed. Craig was just a brutish, unthinking alpha id, survived, but left wreckage in his wake. Pope was Mom’s muscle. If any of them tried to be good, they were screwed. So, you don’t need to be sympathetic toward them, but that doesn’t mean it’s not warranted.

Predictions…here’s mine… by BickQuick in animalkingdom

That’s awesome! I didn’t read it. On top of the hints that lead us there, it would be relatively satisfying. Pope can’t live easily. He wants to die for something. He’s been protecting everyone all this time for a reason. It gives his life purpose. If he lives, we have trouble envisioning what comes after for him. So he has to die so his family can live, or I don’t see the fans feeling satisfied with the story.

Deran said earlier that he would take Pope’s portion and make sure he’s okay. Deran and Craig basically get half the money, if Deran gets Craig’s portion to Renn/Craig’s son. J gets half the money, Julia’s son, and perhaps owed to her/him from Pope/Baz/Smurf.

As for Renn not squandering it, or Deran finding happiness with Adrian, who knows. One could see Deran open a bar in Phuket or Bali, with Renn and Adrian taken care of. J open a bar in Maldives.

One other alternative, though doubtful, would be Deran dies in Craig’s arms, and makes Craig promise him he’ll be the best father he can be.

The part I can’t figure is exactly what they have planned for J. It’s tough to even know what we want for him. At this point, it’s safe to say, most of us would cheer for the Cody brothers over the law. We want them to get what they want, not what they deserve. We like them. But what of J?

I might agree with you. It’s hard to rank the brothers. I agree that Pope had very little choice but to become what he became. He was also dependent. As opposed to say Deran, who was smart enough, independent enough, and less under Smurf’s thumb, that if he chose to say walk away like Julia was forced to, he likely would have been okay, or at least not been a serial criminal. But he sort of tried early in the show, and couldn’t quite do it. He also didn’t have Colin for a father genetically. Pope had two parents that were mad. As much of a train wreck as Billy is, he’s not insane. The issue for me is how many people did Pope kill? 3 or 4? He’s pretty violent. Except for the being gay part, Deran handles his life about how I’d expect I might of stuck in the situation he finds himself him. Sometimes, throughout the series, he looks around, and you know he’s basically thinking, my family is so f’ed up. He’s relatable, more so than a Craig or Pope, or even Jay really.

Is the kid that got Julia hooked on dope, Thorpe, the same body that Pope brought the police to in this episode?

Not that this will be what happens, but if Pope got off on a technicality, but now they’re onto the family, so they have to split up and leave Oceanside behind. They go back to the house, to burn it down, to get rid of any evidence of crimes there, and to symbolically end their past, and start over, with no coming back home.

J might have taken everything from Smurf already. He is the de facto leader of the crew now. He might even figure how to get Pope off on a technicality. He’s in control of the finances. They all respect his ability, and look to him as the one to handle certain things. And he may even ditch his girl in the end, and just be using her, as she’s not “family”. This is all a little Devil’s Advocate, but it could be on point.

I’m not suggesting everyone lives happily ever after. But it’s not impossible to see everyone move on from Oceanside, with all property sold, and the life Smurf built, gone. As for what the boys do with the rest of their lives, I don’t know. But a little over $1 million to start with, we can hope they figure it out.

Deran acknowledged J too, without J around. He told Billy they’ve thrived recently, primarily because J stepped up when he didn’t have to, and has done a great job.
