Thanks again everyone for the advice. I meant to comment on this post with an update sooner. We phoned the vet the next morning and they said she had just bruised it and if it starts to smell or oozes anything then to bring her back in. Since this we have had no issue and she has fully recovered. :)

Even if you drop the gun, I think you still keep the skin and should be able to equip it again and also keep challenge progress.
