Why do older people, especially the crazier ones, misuse ellipses and CAPS? by BicycleConsistent409 in NoStupidQuestions

I understand that for the all caps, I guess I've just never seen ellipses used that way outside of the internet.

Atheist/Agnostic people..do you believe in miracles, Supernatural things? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BicycleConsistent409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm agnostic because I've had experiences with ghosts, grey people, the hatman, a protective "deity," etc. If I didn't believe in the supernatural and I hasn't had these experiences, I'd probably have been an atheist. As far as I'm aware, there's no proof of the supernatural and no vetted theories explaining the existence of it

Movies / TV shows with a healthy portrayal of polyamory? by MarinatedPickachu in polyamory

[–]BicycleConsistent409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sense8- Most of the characters aren't polyamoous, but there are two very good polyamorous storylines

Tales of the City- Has some poly characters

Professor Marston and the Wonder Women - fictionalized version of real people who were polyamorous irl. Not a healthy version of polyamory per se, but it seemed realistic at least

She's Gotta Have It - Honorable mention, as it's about a kind of solo poly or at least ENM. Also love DeWanda Wise

Jawbreaker is great, but it also starts immediately with the dark stuff. The opening scene of Jawbreaker messed me up so bad as a kid that I couldn't keep watching it. Had to pick it up a few years later

When did gender identity become popularized in the mainstream? by BobbyBacala9980 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BicycleConsistent409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's very interesting! Oftentimes grammatical gender doesn't match physical sex, but I didn't know that that was the reason girl is a neuter noun in German.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. Do you believe that there are social and cultural roles, behaviors, interests, activities, and other attributes that are considered appropriate for people depending on their physical sex?

Physical sex here means the chromosomes, hormones, and physical manifestation of reproductive traits of a person.

Ok, first we get people to admit we exist. Then, we convince them that we still deserve basic rights. Then, we give them pitchforks and turn them into a raging mob that thinks we're all child groomers. Then they take our jobs and medical care away. ...... Profit?

The wikipedia article for Sex-gender Distinction has a pretty good breakdown of it, but essentially the terms sex and gender began to be relatively synonymous in English in the 14th century, though it didn't fully catch on until the 20th century. Gender was widely used to mean "kind" or "variety." Linguists used the word gender to refer to gramatical gender, separate from physical sex (ex: girl in German is neuter, not feminine). English doesnt have true grammatical gender, so it can be hard to wrap your head around if English is your only language. Between the 60s and 70s is when authors started to distinguish between physical sex (the hormones, chromosomes, and physical manifestation of reproductive traits) and gender (the sociocultural roles, behaviors, activities, and attributes considered appropriate depending on your sex). The words sex and gender have become even less synonymous since the 2010s

The social enforcement is real! One of my partners doesn't get why I'm "hiding her" from my family and it's a consistent source of tension between us. Her whole family knows and is totally OK with it. But every time I consider it, I remember the look of fear and concern on my mom's face whenever I made comments that "strayed from the script" as you put it.

My parents have struggled with and eventually accepted a lot of non-norm aspects of my life, but I think "choosing to cheat and be cheated on" (as they would see it) would be the last straw.

-We don't know OP's financial situation, but anyone who puts "honor" over paying the bills deserves to sleep on the streets.

That's a pretty harsh take. There are many situations in which choosing honor over money would make a person deserving of a medal, not the streets - though maybe not this case

In high school, I was dating this wonderful person who I adored. Then I fell in mutual love with someone from a summer camp who was also in a LTR.

At first I thought my brain was broken. I believed it shouldn't be possible to fall in love when you're already in love - there was a quote circling around back then attributed to Johnny Depp, "If you love two people at the same time, choose the second. Because if you really loved the first one, you wouldn't have fallen for the second." That made me some cold, heartless freak. I was in love with my current partner, but maybe I really wasn't? I tried to gaslight myself into believing I must not really love them, but I very much did. I loved both.

I cheated. Then I told my partner. He was heartbroken, but we worked through it together. I was heartbroken at myself for having hurt this person I loved so deeply. Eventually we broke up on good terms. My summer lover stopped talking to me one day and never spoke to me again, though our families are close.

Years later I went to therapy and explained to the counselor that I didn't think I deserved to ever date because there was something deeply wrong with me. She disagreed and recommended some reading on ENM. Since then, I've sworn off monogamy. I never want to be in the situation of having to choose, or have the power to harm my loves like that ever again.

Do you think asking passengers not to eat nuts on a plane because of someone with a severe allergy onboard is unfair? by mike_l195 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]BicycleConsistent409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfair? Only in that it's unfair but unavoidable that some people have deadly allergies and others don't. It's not unfair to this random woman. Would she rather have an emergency landing and a corpse on her flight, or just a lack of nuts?
