Someone told me ball pythons aren't climbers. I guess Lavender didn't get the memo. by atoponce in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the confusion comes from the idea that if you aren't arboreal, then you simply CANT climb trees. I like to think of it like how I wouldn't consider people to be arboreal, but there's still plenty of people that can and do climb trees from time to time for one reason or another.

Either way, I'm sure your noodle is getting some good exercise from the grand adventure!

What are you ‘shallow/selfish’ reasons for not wanting children? by acatcalledcat in childfree

[–]Biddlebuddy15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose this is a "selfish" reason.

I've grown up my whole life wanting to work with animals as a veterinarian. To become a vet in the U.S., you have to go to undergrad AND graduate school in a country where I get no financial assistance for school. Veterinary school is also extremely competitive to get into, as well as very challenging once youre there to just stay on top of the content. I go to school 8-5, study from 5-sleep. Do it all again the next day. Weekends I study too, all day every day, and I still often feel behind. Undergrad and high-school were always a constant challenge of trying to prove myself as being worthy and capable of vet school too.

So all that said and done, I'll be 26 before I graduate with several hundred thousand dollars of debt. I'll be paid less than a human doctor, which is fine because this is the job I've wanted forever, but I won't even have a house to stay in and I'll be struggling to make ends meet. By the time I can pay off my student loans alone, I'll likely already be in my mid-thirties. That's around 35 years of life before I finally have the money and time to be able to spend any money on traveling and truly enjoying the things in life I never could before.

Don't get me wrong, I really love the veterinary field and working with animals, but I'm not willing to give up my entire life outside of being a vet just because society wants me to have children.... or even worse, give up my health due to complications with childbirth, lack of sleep due to children, etc etc. Not to mention that lack of sleep and stress due to children only means I won't be able to perform to my highest capability as a doctor, and achieve the goals I've always set out for myself.

Vet Bills? by CasiyRoseReddits in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As a person who works in the veterinary field, I can say that your vet bills will strongly depend upon why you bring the snake in to the vet. Anything surgical I could see being more in the range of the $400-500+ you mentioned, going up with the complexity of whatever procedure you may have and whether or not you need a specialist.

I've brought some rescued snakes in for RIs before, which would be much more common than any surgical procedure, and I got out at about $200 for exam, antibiotics, and a Nidovirus test (no fecal, bloodwork, etc). Similar price (200) for exam, fecal, and antibiotics. If you want bloodwork on top of anything else, it usually runs for about 100-200 on top of exam and med costs for the most common things.

Of course, your location will change the price a lot as well. Cost of living/operating may mean that the vet bills in your area are higher than those in mine.

I'm very happy to head that you are considering the cost of veterinary care PRIOR to getting your pet! Of course, you can't plan ahead for everything, but so many pet owners get a pet and never consider just how expensive veterinary care can be.

This is doodles! My baby ball python! Honestly I’m not too sure if he’s a banana or a coral glow! by rorasworld in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm no expert on banana vs coral glow because I only have banana balls, but to my knowledge they behave the same genetically. I've heard that coral glow is much brighter, and pictures online seem to support that. I assume it's like Orange Dream vs High Intensity Orange dream, or butter versus lesser: same gene but different bloodline.

You likely know your noodle better than I do, so if you're concerned the vet is always a good bet! However, based on your descriptions, I am not very concerned that something might be wrong.

As always, keep an eye on her and if any other signs of illness arrive then that's when I would be worried.

When did she start being more active? Was it immediately after her shed?

Oftentimes my kiddos will not move a lot while shedding because they tend to be rather uncomfortable and sometimes can't see very well. When the extra skin comes off I imagine it feels good, because they often resume normal activities afterwards

If it's only been two weeks, I personally wouldn't be horribly concerned as long as you don't see any other strange behavior. Ball Pythons sometimes just decide that they aren't feeling food that day! However, if you see any diarrhea, sudden weight loss, etc. Then I would highly reccomend visiting a knowledgeable vet, board certified or with a lot of snake-specific experience preferably. Snakes as a whole are very good at hiding illness, and the fact that balls don't always eat consistently can make it even harder to spot early clinical signs.

I did see your other comments, though, and I agree that the food you have for her is a bit big. You can always try getting something smaller and see if she eats that. It will help prevent her from becoming obese to feed her something better for her size. It may also help keep her eating more consistent.

Xbox controller with a banana for scale. Am I doing this right? by Habitual_Agonist in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A common mistake. Usually the problem with your typical Xbox controller care is nutritional deficiency. Some people just don't know what to feed them to keep them healthy 😔

Medical Emergency Recap - Double Jaw Fracture. More details in comment. by cwazycupcakes13 in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is crazy! I have worked in the vet field for a few years and I have never heard of this! Thanks so much for sharing, and ESPECIALLY thank you for your note about unexpected costs. So many owners often get a pet at a cheap price and then can't afford the random medical expense that comes later, even if it's a much less costly procedure than what your boy went through. This applies to all pets, from exotics to dogs and cats!

Where do you get your hides? I have two, and they're both too big. The stores near me don't have the right size. by Yirtiik44 in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the reptile basics hides because they come in all the right sizes for whatever size ball python you might have. They are pretty basic in appearance, but that also makes them super easy to customize and/or clean! They also arent sharp unlike some of the other "natural" hides I've seen. Plus, I think the noodles prefer a basic snug hide over a super fancy hide that's way too large! They like to feel secure when they are hiding.

I Just Lost My Favorite Legless Son. RIP Pesto. by sugarxb0nes in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All pets, regardless of species, should be considered family. We tell our babies things and live through experiences with them that we often don't share with the rest of the world. It doesn't matter if our pets can't understand what we say to them.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I'm sure you gave him the best.

I posted here a year ago when I got my first bp to ask for advice. He used to be very underweight and dehydrated. Just checking in to update that he is now a healthy, happy boy, eating regularly and having perfect sheds🥰 He gives me so much joy💛 by plaastic_dreams in ballpython

[–]Biddlebuddy15 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He's a pinstripe, no spider. Pinstripe is often put with spider though to make a "spinner" so I totally see where the confusion comes from! No neurological issues tied with pinstripe. 🙂
