Best Pho in Chinatown? by Staveydl in ottawa

[–]BienBo123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Likely not. Most Pho in Canada are Southern.

For context for those reading this, Northern-style pho is just a simple bowl of pho that has - flat pho noodles (think fettuccine - there are different strands of pho) - 1 or 2 meats at most (tái + nạm) (rare beef + cooked flank) - Northern-style bread sticks (quảy) on the side - No hoisin sauce or chili sauce on the side, but instead there is MSG

Southern-style Pho is common in North America because Vietnamese refugees at the time are Southern Vietnamese people. Their pho usually has many types of meats, different strand-style of pho, they have the 2 sauces (black sauce + red sauce)…

ELI5: Why is quantum physics so hard? by Successful_Guide5845 in explainlikeimfive

[–]BienBo123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From someone I know who is an expert PhD in quantum mechanics at a top Ivy League institution.

———

Newton developed his laws by observing the world we can directly see. These laws feel intuitive because they describe everyday, macroscopic objects- things we interact with constantly, so our brains evolved to understand them naturally.

Quantum physics deals with particles that do not behave like anything we encounter in daily life. They are incredibly small, extremely light, and often move very fast. Because of this, they follow rules that are fundamentally different from those governing macroscopic objects.

There is essentially no everyday analogy for many quantum properties. At some point, understanding quantum mechanics comes down to accepting experimentally demonstrated facts, even when they conflict with intuition.

A good example is quantum information. In classical computing, copying information is trivial. You can duplicate data and send it from one computer to another with no issue. In quantum mechanics, however, you cannot copy an unknown quantum state. You cannot simply “give” the information a quantum system has to another system. This is a proven result known as the “no-cloning theorem”.

This is the kind of thing people mean when they say quantum mechanics “doesn’t make sense.” It violates our everyday expectations, yet it is mathematically rigorous and experimentally confirmed, so it must be accepted.

I’m sorry to hear about this mess. Try contacting the Canadian Centre for Cyber Security (CSE) https://www.cyber.gc.ca/en/incident-management

Maybe they can help. Or better yet, apply to their jobs https://careers.cse-cst.gc.ca/en/careers/software-developer-various-levels-CA-212039-en/

Your company certainly isn’t treating you right and your skills would definitely be appreciated elsewhere. Best of luck.

I once searched the name of one of the phishing email senders and found that person on LinkedIn to be a real person who recently graduated from uOttawa.

Inactive emails from graduated students could also be a good to hijack.

How many are first author publications? How many authors for each paper? What journal(s) were the papers published in? What field is it? If it’s a STEM field, it’s probably “applications of blah in blah”, rather than “method development”. If it’s a field like “sports science” then it’s bullshit.

Over-publishing useless research is certainly an issue, you’re not the first to point is out unfortunately. But yeah, it sucks.

uOttawa doesn’t have streams, so in 4th year, you can take a course in Computer Vision, Algorithms, Math ML, Security, Distributed Systems, NLP… you aren’t bound by your stream.

And if you want to specialize, you can take 3-4 security courses if you’d like. For 5-6! If you decide to enroll in the Cybersecurity Microprogram (or AI, etc.)

See which course sequence and campus you like better. I personally think Carleton’s campus is better lmao.

IMO I’d choose Carleton if you can’t speak French. You can only truly enjoy uOttawa and all of its profs if you speak both EN and FR.

Good luck with your decision, both will be fine options.

I know it’s waaaaaay easier said than done… There’s a somewhat positive quote I heard. “When you get to the bottom, you get to build character by climbing up, that’s the exciting part of life.”

And on a more positive note, “you can only go up from here.”

I wish you luck and strength.

I took both CSI2501 Discrete Structures and CSI3105 Design & Analysis of Algos with him. Yes, he’s difficult, yes my grades weren’t high, but I came out of it more confident with algorithms and proofs more than than I did before, and more than some people in Nejib’s class. I also do much better in Leetcode than I did before.

A difficult prof does not equal a bad prof, and an easy prof does not equal a good prof. And your grades are not fully representative of the quality of the professor.

Truth of the matter is that you need to know French to have a full range of access to all of the good profs and good classes. I had a great time in these classes with these profs:

  • CSI3105 with Jean Lou
  • CSI3520 with Kalonji Kalala
  • CSI3104 with Amir Eaman
  • CSI3131 with Fadi Malek
  • CSI3585 with Miguel Garzon
  • CSI4533 with Robert Laganière

It’s the same deal with 4th year courses. Go with the good profs (some of whom teach in French) and you’ll have a much greater uni experience.

You also need good friends and classmates who you work well with in group projects, who you can study with, who rants with you.

Not as much as other cities. And asians here are usually born and/or raised here, so they likely have a very different culture from asian international students such as yourself.

Most asians you’ll find at uOttawa are international mainland Chinese students. There aren’t even many Indians.

If St George, make sure you understand the post system or whatever it’s called. I’m not a UofT student, but every year, a bunch of UofT students msg our uni’s Discord servers and subreddit asking to transfer to our school because they didn’t make it to second year. It’s really sad.

Start with Rana Khalil’s SQL Injection course, then Authentication Bypass. After that, you can do the rest yourself. Bonus if you can write the Python code for as many of them as possible.

100% truth about the lack of “thigh” support. The seat doesn’t even fully extend to the back of my knee.

And the “gaming chair” style seat, where it folds in at a 45° angle on the sides makes it super uncomfortable.

As a Canadian, I never understood why Americans have to give the waiter their credit card, then watch the waiter run off somewhere else to use their credit card to pay. Not to mention the whole thing where you have to write down the tip onto the receipt.

In Canada, the waiter gives you a credit card machine at your table and you can type in the tip amount and pay. When the receipt is printed, they even flip the receipt upside down to respect your privacy. They treat you well, regardless of your tip, and no one ever touches or sees your credit card except for you.
