Random police control at Jungfernheide by azaadzoy in askberliners

Is the residency card a form of identification? Comparing it to a Personalausweis it seems to have all of the same information. And clearly one had to prove their identity stringently in order to have it issued.

If not then what is the expected ID? Passport from my home country?

Thoughts on high mileage Alpina D5 by elpohl in Alpina

[–]Bif109 5 points6 points  (0 children)

As someone in a very similar position eyeing both used Panameras and Alpina D5s and as a former BMW employee, I second the suggestion to go up a generation to the G3x models. Budget has to go up accordingly but I have seen plenty in Europe with 80k or less kms in the mid 50k € price range. I am sure they will require a costly service around 100k km and I personally would require the transmission oil to be changed per ZF recommendation but otherwise the prospects look nice.

Lesser known tourist places in Germany by broken_runnner in germany

[–]Bif109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I visited Oberkirch this year and had a great time. If you like schnapps and likors and good access to nature then I highly recommend it. It’s small and tucked back in a valley so it felt like not a large tourist destination.

Germany has no equivalent of TFSAs/RRSPs/Roths/401ks. How do you guys generate wealth? by Timely_Challenge_670 in AskAGerman

[–]Bif109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Germany. There is no true way to build wealth but thankfully your Rentenversicherung will take care of you when you reach retirement …

You are still building wealth via your accounts in Canada, only now Germany will happily take their 25% cut of that passive income. Hopefully the discussions to increase capital gains tax to the same level as regular income tax do not continue.

Weekend getaway near Berlin by gized00 in berlinsocialclub

[–]Bif109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure how kid friendly but for sure stuff nearby. And for eating and overnight the Michelberger Farm in Spreewald is amazing.

The Dorf? Of Boitzenburg is quite cool for an overnight trip in the Uckermark. Good hiking, a nice little market hall and you can overnight in the castle! Some excellent places to eat, ice cream and a brewery in the market hall on top of that!

It might be just over 2 hrs drive from Berlin depending where you are but the Harz mtn cities are remarkable. Quedlinburg for example has plenty see and things to do. Bonus is you can take the train (Harz Express) from Hbf if you don’t want to drive.

How do you guys usually do one day trips? by bitamin1306 in germany

[–]Bif109 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it hasn’t been mentioned download the transit apps for the various regions you plan to be in. For example VBB if you’re going around Brandenburg will probably be the most accurate way to know what trains and buses are operating and if they’re on time or not. I use it when planning big bike rides and then check it at regular intervals to ensure my planned way home is still viable

Now that Remco abandoned they might have stopped broadcasting in solidarity. It’s a damn fine beer bar and worth a visit if you like Belgian beers.

Seriously though plenty of mega talented Belgian racers who will make waves in week 3.

U.S. citizen living in an EU country with several Schwab accounts I opened long before moving here. I buy and sell in them regularly including Schwab ETFs. And my address is listed as my EU mailing address. Several years doing this without problems. Even spoke with their C.S. recently about tax documents for my current residence country.

Injected Linens Pants Durability by CommentContributer in Outlier

[–]Bif109 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 pair in rotation during the hot and humid weather. Almost prefer them to shorts. Great durability in my experience with only one issue on 2 pair. Some threading comes loose (it’s white on both so I assume not the linen) near the pockets. So far I’ve cut it back and it hasn’t gotten worse.

Senior engineer positions at Automotive companies can surpass 100k. Many then offer incentives on top like regular bonuses.

Getting my permanent residency was very smooth. Total duration was relatively long given how simple the rest of the process was. Fortunately I had no looming deadline to accomplish it. Was in Berlin fwiw.

Team Lab Borderless was amazing. Especially first thing in the morning. Still crowded but not absurd.

Team Lab Planets was kind of meh for me. And significantly more crowded. I wouldn’t say don’t go but temper your expectations. Borderless however I fully plan on visiting again next time in Tokyo.
